I would also add (maybe this is #3+#4): networking is important and might come harder to some developers stuck in their own world.
Understand the needs and goals of your manager peers / team members / boss (360 degrees) so that you can come to mutually beneficial [financial] decisions.
Kudos for focusing on cooking. It really changed my life when i started focusing on things like making bread, growing my own vegetables (at least to supplement store-bought), and learning the science and history behind foods/meals. I lost about 10 pounds just by learning how to cook and gaining an understanding of portion control and managing salt/nutrition levels. Also, I'm pretty confident my daycare-enrolled kids are less sick than their classmates who eat out one or more meals daily or are reliant on the bag of chicken nuggets and yellow-weird mac and cheese.

I worked for a company where we gave you two modes to view things (a A/V version with bullet points, and a text transcript version). Its cool in concept. BUT, once you get into this you're doubling the amount of work as an author for very little gain (unless the modes are "instruction-ally purposeful" in some way). In addition, if you do any multi-lingual work (we did), you've doubled your translation cost per language as well.
Its also hard to validate the perspectives of your users. One TLDR user isn't the same as another - one wants 2-3 paragraphs another wants three bullets. You can put in that work here, but... its work. And you're not guaranteeing anyone ever sees the bulk of your long-form to which you probably want them to see to make a lasting connection and because you put the effort in to generate.
Google seemed to have some trouble recently when they didnt show up to congress... but then it just disappeared. Facebook seems to have tried to own up to it, and its backfiring... Google must have just paid off everyone with their lobbying powerhouse to make it go quiet.

Is he waking up near the same time every night? If so, wake him up and re-comfort him before he wakes himself up. Breaks his body's habits, and resets after a week or two (YMMV on the length of time). That was the advice from our (general) doctor.
We also tried gas drops, as we noticed sometimes he just burped and went back to sleep after half an hour of extreme crankiness.

I've done the same, although, i just put it right in the code:
TODO, REDO, DONE with the corresponding JIRA ticket ID for extended mental notes (Pull Request fits here too). IDEs can grok all that together so you can quantify the bad stuff in the code, which can help management make better decisions.
for what its worth, I think they do a good job with Daniel Tiger to continue his legacy. My kids love it (maybe because its the only thing i'll let them watch), and it has taught me a few things on how my kids are going to react to certain situations.
I second the IBM comment... they could have consulted the heck out of GitHub in the enterprise.
A part of the burden of cars is the table stakes though... cars can potentially kill people. A home robot worst-case is a potential pooptastrophe [0] (I guess.. unless people can trip on it and fall down stairs).

:) I miss the community that was the QBASIC Prodigy BBS groups. I spent hours trying to design better games and utilites, only to be outdone by a random stranger. We'd have to first make the games, then invent new compression techniques to get the big ones posted to the board, and i think someone even had a splitter/combinator thing to put the encryption back together over multiple posts.

I think where we can agree to disagree is we both want them to have a healthy relationship with technology, but we're disagreeing on what that healthy relationship is.
At the end of the day, the job of the parent is to protect. As a part of that, if i read and believe that technology is rewiring their brains for reason X, Y, Z then that's what i fix. Not if it makes them happy or not; I'm not their friend first.
I've never been more disappointed in a product than the Nest Cam. Nest's lack of panning and zooming, and a subscription service PER camera? False alarms so frequent that i ignore them now, which defeats the purpose? I don't know if it was marketed as a security device or i just assumed it would be, but its far from a good security device in my case.
I used to have 3 Foscam's (now rebranded to Amcrest) recording to a local central server, backing up to an offsite location, and tried with some success to get imageMagick to weed out any duplicate false alarms. Thought the NestCam would be make things more friction-less, but its worse. (I lost the old setup but am probably going back to the new ones soon).
OP: to get around your notification rule, you can try IFTTT. I've had various levels of success: it always seems to work fine for a week, and then something changes (android update? ifttt update? nest app update?) and it breaks until i notice it again.

You seem like the person to ask, so... did you write a "Stavros Home" skill (to borrow from your SN) which can do all of that centrally, or multiple skills?
The problem I'm finding is I can train myself to remember about 5 skill names that can each do one or two things, but thats about it. I'm wondering when I write my own, if i should just have a central skill for my house. Also how did you link into the Chromecast? This often bothers me, and obviously when i was cooler and in college I did it to. Aaaaaand it didn't get me anywhere. In this particular case, we're talking real-estate? big money, important purchase, long-term debts. It especially doesn't fit.
Some anecdotal outcomes [0], [1], [2] of the system below. In general, people were outraged for a few months and local news seemed to mention it in most drug-bust stories, but that seems to have died off. My law enforcement friends were beside themselves at first, but I think both sides are adjusting to the system.
I think in general I agree with it. Without context of witnessing the [alleged] crime and without the algorithm in front of me, sometimes I wonder if certain situations have exposed some holes in the algorithm. In addition to the three cited below, I remember reading about a guy in Ocean County being released after they found him with $1M of drugs... maybe his supplier took care of that problem for the community...

Do you think this is sort of the "grass is always greener" situation though? I find myself regretting not doing something a little more hands-on as a career, so I built some hobbies around it.
