Just curious what are the things you hate about linkedin specifically.

I like the interface. HOwever I think the filters need a little work. For example I clicked on Action and I got these results: http://movieo.me/?grid=list_movie&file=movies%2F_movies&rate...

They contain Chicago, Diva, King Creole, etc.. not exactly what I would call action movies. All in all looks pretty cool !

Like everyone's been saying I think these kind of things take time. I think all in all the shift in startup culture has been dramatic over the last ten years in NYC. Its only a matter of time for an iconic tech company to come out of NYC, especially if investments keeps growing.

Kind of crazy to see how almost every Country on the list has the United States as a destination.

The server administration information on slicehost has been real useful for me, I hope they port that documentation over and it doesn't get lost. The articles were basically my introduction to setting up a web server, db , and installing language packages.

What was the age range of the kids?

I would say Guitar and Piano are the instruments I would like to pick up

This is pretty mentally jaring, I realized how much searching is a process that I had practiced in certain way for long time. In a couple minutes playing with it , I found myself figuring out how to search for something again. I know there are objections to the UI, or whether it actually improves the search results, or whether the speed increase is worth it but just from a mental perspective it has made me realize how the act of searching is wired into my thought process.

What I find annoying that at work I can see people wasting time on facebook, gchat, etc... while a nap is frowned upon.

I do martial arts and taking out my aggression or anger on a punching bag makes me feel better, is it me or does a list of what should make me happy or to be happy really getting tiring. I am all for trying to understand the nature of happiness but please don't tell me what should make me happy.

What are your thoughts on http://www.plos.org/ ? Just curious...I completely agree with what you said and I feel more than ever now since I am out of school and lost access to journal articles.

Not a big fan of that one, I think some situations are out of your control however nothing would have gotten done in this world if everyone followed this moto.

I tend to write down every month large goals that I want to do. For example, I want to become a successful entrepreneur or I would like to win the world karate championships. After that I just focus on every day and see if my day matches my long term goals. I tried to plan too much in the past, I realized my time horizons are defined by now and my ultimate dreams.

I know the post is whether to choose from Boston or SV, but I see your from NY. I been around the NYC startup scene for while and there a bunch of activity here and it only has increased since Wall St. decided to die. Brooklyn and Manhattan have a bunch of startup opportunities, even some startups from Ycombinator are located here like Buglabs and Frogmetrics. Not to mention organizations/meetups like Jelly ( coworking started in nyc), Meetup.com's ( located in nyc as well)NYC tech meetup, and http://www.nextny.org/. Obviously if you feel the need to move to Boston or SV I understand completely given there status in tech world but don't overlook your backyard as well.

While these sites offer more variety, the current limited stanford offering has better quality. By quality I mean you get all the lecture videos , course notes, exams, and hw solutions. If you compare this to the relevant classes at MIT and Berkeley its just plain better. At MIT you have no video for their intro CS classes and you don't have access to all the lecture notes and Berkeley is just video. Kudos to Stanford , this has been a great resource to me.

Man if I was a shareholder in Microsoft I would be worried. There spending money on this... what about making their products better. Whatever the quality of microsoft now it doesn't matter because I switched to Mac specifically because my computer crashed constantly , lost files, and gave me nightmares. They need to get my friend telling me , " Dude, I have been using Vista and I love it, " end of story. I don't hear this anywhere. Is Vista that bad ? Probably not, but not bad isn't going to take back business from Apple, and change any previous negative perception that many people have of Microsoft products. A good Ad-campaign does little if you don't have substance behind it.

yeah definitely, the question is how to apply our technical ability to meet some of these challenges. I been asking myself this question for awhile. However I also look at guys like sergey and larry and see how there innovations in the web have enabled them to move into other fields that have a direct impact on climate change.

Naps are the cure all for me in general. Need a little energy boost take a nap, have a headache take a nap, not feeling well cold coming take a nap. Most of my friends are amazed that I don't drink coffee.

I have to say that fact that I got minus 5 from this comment is pretty indicative of the kind of community hacker news, and I mean it as a compliment. I saw the UPS thing and the first thing out of my mouth was wow, it was instinctual , as soon as I submitted it I knew some negative karma was coming my way. I forgot that I wasn't on digg.

The reality is that the average person cares nothing for what happens behind the scenes, they care about the results. If you are going to spend 15 million dollars on a Wikipedia search tool and it doesn't offer any significantly better search results than anyone else you wasted money, lots of it.

It all goes back to the mentality of loving what you do...if that results in you being the next google so be it. The problem is people set their minds on being the next big thing instead of worrying about what they are doing in the present. DHH is speaking to living in the present and not compromising your ideals.
