You're expected to give two weeks' notice, but they can let you go without any notice.
Luckily, this is not the case where I live. Both sides have the same amount of notice

I am not sure whether TOTP can be used two times, but that longer validity aspect already lead to a vulnerability called "Microsoft MFA AuthQuake"
Is ProtonCaptcha [1] a good alternative to reCaptcha? I’m sure it is GDPR compliant but can anyone just use it?
Thanks for this extensive response. I respect what you created there, my comment was not supposed to talk down your creation!
As I already said, they look great! Wish you all the best and lots of success, I mean it.
Edit: maybe add this explanation about what makes your product so special to your site. I mean this extensive explanation (or did I overlook it there?). I am not sure whether it is a good idea to refer to competing products though, this is a question for marketing persons.
Edit2: also, you are absolutely right, this is a show HN post. I should not have made that part of the comment. I apologise.
Those cards look great and I hope this will help some people to learn kanji.
However, I fail to see the USP in comparison with cards like, let’s say from white rabbit press [1]. Is there supposed to be any?
This comes of as simple advertisement.
I think there are noises specific to railways. And from what I believe this "MetaWindow" targets relevant frequencies. However, I am sure this also works for the frequencies generated by car traffic.
At least the linked youtube video in this comment [1] does not mention anything about frequencies.

EDIT: I was wrong about the video. There is _no mention_ about frequencies.
This [1] is the official press release by Deutsche Bahn. I wanted to post this instead, but it is in German.

True for most, if not any, reputable email service provider besides Google, MS, and Co.
Don’t know what users here think about posting links to one’s own site, but I’ll risk it. I migrated from gmail to proton, and wrote down the steps and experience. [1]
Should be the same for tutanota or others, don’t know about migration script (easy switch) of others, though. For me it worked without any hiccups.
It is frightening, how little tenants are protected from being kicked out by the landlord in the US. Are there major differences between the states?
In contrast to that, I believe tenants are too well protected in Europe, or at least Germany, from sitting out in the cold. For example, if a tenant has not paid rent in months (and is not planning on doing so) it still is legally difficult to put them on the street. I think the term for that is squatter?! Friend of mine had damage on his property exceeding €10k until he could regain control over his apartment/flat.
Reminds me of this blog post https://www.joshwcomeau.com/animation/css-transitions/
This might be a stupid question. If WhatsApp wasn’t blocked in China and the second WhatsApp account (aka server side) was outside of China, could this bypass the great firewall?
I did not see there already is a thread about this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33348716
I think this guide is not too bad [1]. Some stuff depends on the business you are in and the company you are applying at. Listing the marital status used to be very important, but I don’t believe it still is.
German companies love official certificates, as if they really prove something (most time it doesn’t imo)
As most people here, I am working in IT. Since there is a demand for us, I don’t feel like I really have to stick to those rules. For example, I gave up on having a German CV, even for non international companies. I was tired of curating two CVs. Companies expect us to be proficient in English anyway, so I expect the same.
I should urgently get a) my mails out of my personal (non paying) Gmail account and b) get my associated photos out of Google Photos, mainly because of baby pictures which I cannot fathom to lose.
I highly recommend it. It feels like pure freedom, putting a price tag on my personal data. The migration is something done in two steps: set up your alternative service, but also keep the old one (gmail/gdrive/calendar/...) running. Then start to use the new email service, while keeping the old one.
There are enough affordable options and you do not have to migrate everything at once. I started with my emails - gmail is still running and forwards all incoming emails, so I wont miss anything. I already updated all my accounts/logins to the new email address.
The next step was copying all my files from Dropbox, GDrive, and so on to {service I am using}. The data in the other clouds are still there, but I am going to delete it all soon.
There are things that are not perfect - like accepting appointments, which I still want to show up in my Google calendar. To those mails I still have to respond in google mail. But I am getting there, one step after another. The win so far is much bigger than the loss/pain.
My best interview experiences were with companies that either documented their full interview process on their website or told me beforehand how many rounds there are going to be and what to expect during each round. This includes sending me a onepager about each interview partner, so I could get to know something about them before meeting them.
In the end there was one extra interview (after the three they told me about beforehand), but that was because my requested salary was higher than the company expected, so they wanted to make sure I was a good fit.
EDIT: Those companies also scheduled all interviews for the same day. This way I could receive the offer/rejection within less than one week.
How do you refurbish batteries? I mean, you are not only cleaning the outside, are you?
Is it possible to search your blog for specific terms or is there an overview with all articles listed?
Thank you. I seriously didn’t know the meme and had a good read during my lunch break
This is a good point and a perspective I neglected. Usually, when receiving feedback on my code I solve this by discussing the _why_ after receiving a _what_ as feedback.
When giving feedback, I try to do the same: Instead of just saying what is bad/wrong/smelly etc. and telling how to change the code I’ll also give the reasons why I think so.
The discussion afterwards should clarify the remark and I am open to the possibility that I am wrong. But you are right, at the moment I feel like currently I am giving up my approach/code too easily. This is partially because my colleagues are quite experienced and I’m very lucky to be able to learn from them.
Edit: Improved the punctuation.
The article does not mean being ego-less about the product, the customer, or the user. It means being ego-less about yourself as a developer, at least that’s how I understand it.
In other words, do not stop to care about the product, the customer, or the user. Stop caring about __your ego__, when other developers criticize you (in contrast to not caring when they criticize you)
Another good example why more governmental data should be open…
I agree, but also have to add: Does any (normal, non digital) art (say picture or sculpture) have any value itself? Besides the value of the material of course.
Not the main topic of the article, but in my opinion an interview/discussion also is supposed to answer another (third) question: Does the company fulfill the expectations of the potential employee? Not only the candidate has to sell their own service/skill during the interview/discussion, the company is being evaluated, too.
deliver constructive but critical feedback as close to the “original sin” as possible. Receiving feedback that you did poorly weeks after the fact is disconcerting. It can lead the recipient to wondering what other things they’re doing poorly but won’t hear about until later.
This is very true. It happened to me some time ago, that I was performing very poorly - at least according to my team (I think it is at least partially true but there were circumstances) Instead of telling me so I have a chance to improve, my boss just fired me during my probation time. If I would have known earlier they are not happy I would have adapted my work style according to their expectations and tried to please them. This way I didn’t even receive a chance.
Context: I just started a new job and then the first lockdown due to corona happened. Nobody was prepared to onboard me properly. I was a junior developer, but in hindsight I believe they expected a senior developer

If you live somewhere where this price is too expensive (south America or some SEA country for example) Josh offers to send him an email and he will give discount, if he agrees that it is fair.
Edit: adding source for my claim. Go to the website of the course that was already posted here and search for “Purchasing Power Parity”
I am using Firefox and I do not have a Facebook account
Making it a requirement for being hired is plain dumb. Even if the employee was doing a great job and getting along with everyone, the employer could be pissed that the employee wants to quit and deny that request…
Addition: It is similar to making it a requirement to own a university degree for a senior dev position. There are enough devs out there with many years of experience.
I did not move, but was let go at the end of my probationary period without prior notice. It was the time of the first corona shutdown and they could not really onboard me properly (at least from my perspective), so my performance suffered.
The point I want to make here is, that no one on the team had the balls to tell me that they are unhappy with my performance and instead told my boss very late. I did not have a chance to improve or change anything. It can happen to anyone and any time.
In hindsight this is still the best thing that could have happened to me.
