The thing is, Apple caters to the average user, not too much to specific needs. One example of burst-loads would be compiling code. Also, does watching 4K video lead to thermal throttling these days with hardware accelerated decoding?

Why would you test all Ubuntu desktop environments separate? Shouldn’t the hardware support be the same?

Shouldn’t the hardware support be the same in a given kernel version?

I’m sad to see Chris step down from CSS Tricks, loved his designs, content moderation and writing style.

I don’t know if I trust DO as his „successor“, I’ve lost way too much money on their platform for me to consider them trustworthy. And that’s coming from a person who now uses Oracle Cloud.

Child pornography users in most cases use the internet too. A lot of them have cars and drive on the road. We should boycott public infrastructure altogether since it can be used for bad actions.

I get your point, but in my experience it is more common to land on a website with a malicious ad than intentionally download an untrusted app.

What are they supposed to do when their own government has a warrant? Ignore it and let the government shut down the whole site? This way they followed it without breaking anyones encryption, no back door, … this is a positive aspect in my view.

In theory you could connect via Ethernet directly to the Hue Bridge and turn the lights off that way, but at that point you can as well fix the other issues.

My main argument for Philips Hue instead of alternatives was that they can be controlled even if AWS or some other networks are down.

You can turn them off at the socket, the newer ones via Bluetooth, and with the bridge itself. The bridge didn’t work because it is on a separate IOT vlan (and routing between wifi and this vlan didn’t work), and I was too lazy to turn them off one by one.

The nice thing about hue is that they work without an internet connection, which is not a given these days.

There already are tons of options for free VMs. I have 4 Oracle Cloud instances with 4 cores, 24gb RAM and 200gb disks total for this exact same use case. I suppose the author prematurely assumed all VPSs are costly or does not want to set up the networking themself.
