History tends to repeat itself and there have been many, many situations much worse than what we have experienced due to poor hygiene, health, inequality in wealth and so on. Kids working in factories from young ages just to make a couple of pennies for a loaf of bread, then being beaten at home and school.

It almost feels like people are completely unaware of various pandemics that wiped out millions, trial by fire and witch hunts and so on. Better yet, the economy has never been better compared to many previous years in the last century and more.

The only major difference has been the advent of social media.

By 2050, with current plans, the quantity of worn-out solar panels—much of it nonrecyclable—will constitute double the tonnage of all today’s global plastic waste, along with over 3 million tons per year of unrecyclable plastics from worn-out wind turbine blades. By 2030, more than 10 million tons per year of batteries will become garbage.

Well you could argue that it wouldn't be Walmart that does it, it would be the producer so Samsung, Apple, LG, Asus, Acer etc would sell their products with a digital twin (NFT) which provides sales from future purchases.

That being said, it could reduce the need for new products/versions being created every other week. However, there would need to be a somewhat centralized 'marketplace' that facilities the second hand sales which is where Walmart could step in with some perks for selling with them.

Pretty much. 1000 true fans is essentially the backbone of the NFT argument which basically revolves around artists and their fans parting ways with cash for collectable items. With NFT tickets, the artist always gets paid no matter who is selling the ticket and how many times it get sold. I would say that this is a win for the artist.

Royalties. The ticket seller can set that and every time the ticket is resold, they will get % of that sale. For an artist that would mean they can sell a ticket with % royalty set and then profit from future sales on an ongoing basis.

Remember Clubhouse? The $1bn Unicorn? Basically defunct now because people just defaulted back to passive aggressive typing.

Leaving Google 5 years ago

These posts almost feel like a Scientology style exodus and moment of clarity.

It's amazing that when you consider most tech companies based their entire perks strategy off the back of free food, beers, playgrounds, sleeping pods etc all in the name of keeping workings in the build at all times a la Facebook and Google.

A little like the casinos tricks where you will never see a clock or the time inside one. There's a slight tilt on all pavements in Las Vegas that slowly push you towards the building, all without you knowing that it's happening.

Brainwashing at it's finest.

This literally is the divide between HN types and everyday individuals.

The latter pays little attention because they generally do not care whilst HN will debate and suggest endless fixes to the problem - which are always technically more difficult or cumbersome. This is why people buy Apple products on each iteration, religiously for some, because they want it to work, be pretty and the desire of everyone.

The UK has been well known for their love of CCTV and yet crimes still go unpunished and people don't get caught.

Interesting. I was about to start on some web automation and so far I've had hammered into my head that Selenium is the 'language of the internet' or something along those lines.

What would be a better solution, if you have any to recommend?

Spam, the mother of all growth hacking.

It makes me laugh thinking about my time as a growth hacker. Reading these style of posts and thinking that there's going to be some hidden gem of dam buster that will unleash all leads.

Nope just spam. Spam will get you the results you need.

If it's a strike then it 9 times out of 10 means the airline will have to payout for delayed and cancelled flights. I would imagine they are trying to spin this every which way possible to eliminate the inevitable bill that will need to be paid. Financials are probably out of whack too since covid so this situation could really cripple/break them.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that FF users are all going to pay? How many free Versus paid users are on Youtube Premium? There are billions of Youtube users I would imagine, certain they are not paying.

> Also I don't want a "competitive browser", I want a simple browser that is customizable and that if needed, developers can run more complex addons on top of it. That is it. I am sure I am not alone in this.

Get your wallet out, hire some developers, build it, share it. You want a lot and make demands but I don't see how what you said is economically viable.

1 user at $4.16 per month is not going to help, support and develop a competitive browser or search engine.

1mn users paying $4/m is going to be just over $40mn per year. There's no way any company can compete with MS or Google on that revenue stream. Get investors and they will enforce whatever it takes to build revenue = ads.

Bitcoin is a Ponzi 5 years ago

Currency evolved from barter > to bartering with set mediums of exchange > to coins representing exchangeable goods > to coins stamped in precious metal > to paper representing coins > to notes representing gold or silver > to being redeemable exclusively for gold > to the end of the gold standard.

Money’s value has been dictated by how much of something a currency can buy – which is dependent on inflation and economic performance.

I would love to have seen/heard the conversations that were had around the changes that people had to go through and if the conversations were similar to this day. Because I would imagine that back then, considering that money is just an agreed upon invisible force a la Bitcoin, people probably hard a very hard time understanding the intrinsic value of this metal coin/paper money.

This is NFTs 1.0. The current issue is that there's a gap between your NFT and a suitable metaverse.

People love to customize their avatars, it's just what we like to do. NFTs 2.0 will be able to take your purchases and add them into whatever metaverse dominates at that current time.

As much as people like to say why buy things digital I remember reading a HN thread where many, many, many people preferred to live in a digital world VERSUS the real world. Therefore if you live in a metaverse you probably will want to customize and make yourself digital twin unique to your likes, desires etc.

What we are seeing right now is a standard progressive of a new digital product that some take advantage of, others don't see it and some will see the potential.

QR Codes have been around for years, dropped off the map and then came storming back even though they are unsecure, some people hate them, others love them and so on.

1000 true fans is a great article that is well worth reading. It really does go to show that building a community can be a worthwhile task, even if it does take time the long term benefits can be huge.
