One data point: it is not bad at all. I use Firefox as my primary browser(having used chrome on and off for many years) and it works well for almost everything. There are occasional sites that don't behave with ff and for those I go to chrome. Even the andoid version is not bad (the only problem is that is is harder to avoid chrome due to smaller issues with websites).
A few points to point out: from your post, it sounds like Amazon never applies for h1b which is not true. They just don't prefer to use it for a person who is not already in USA. They do apply for the visa where it makes sense.
If they chose to go h1b route, they will have to apply for a visa and then wait for 6 months before the person can actually work(and the developer could still choose to not join thereby making the visa application useless). Clearly, going through Canada is a better option for them.
not if there are multiple co-founders and possibly some investors involved.
yeah, this is my line of thought as well. But it gets complicated when there are two co-founds in the same boat :)

I am from India and am in US on H1B with gc process underway in EB2 category. I (along with a fellow friend) have been thinking of doing something on our own but are always discouraged by the immigration process. If we were to start something on our own, what are our options? H1b where you have a majority stake seems to not be an option. Is there an alternate way to do this?

I had the same question. I clicked on a few links that I thought would lead to the product description but they didn't. Eventually I realized that the domain was open.buffer.com. Once you go to buffer.com, you see the product description. From the homepage:
"The best way to drive traffic, increase fan engagement and save time on social media."

They go into exactly the point you make and talk about how gender gap still does exists (although no so extreme).
Seems like Homebrew is doing many things right:
- Anonimizing IP address.
- Explaining what data is collected, and why
- A way to optout
Something that could be better:
- Make this optout for new users and opt-in for existing users?
- Notify the user in some manner when the data is sent to GA for the first time?
- Change the uuid every X period of time to make things more privacy friendly.

They kinda do. Over time, the skills of a dev and SRE diverge a bit but at the core they are the same. I am a dev at Google but went through a program called Mission Control[1]. (It was a great learning experience and helped me do my job as a dev much better.)
As others have said, there is a pretty intensive training that you go through and obviously you learn a lot when you are handling things...

This argument doesn't really make sense to me. What browser, OS and device are you using to post this comment? Someone made profit when you bought the device, bought the OS and/or browser.
A healthy system needs some kind of motivation. In economies, that is profits/money. What's wrong with that? (I know I am being simplistic here but...)

Both. I have a 7 month old and just finished working on a decently sized project (amp-analytics[1]). Both my team and manager have been super supportive through the process. I don't remember when I worked full 40 hours a week (that does not mean the work did not get done. Just that I could work when the child allowed me to.) Except for working from home on occasions (1-2 days a month), I didn't work remotely much so I do not know the policies around it.

Why not make it simple for people and just use one name? How does the "technically different" part affect people?
OpenSSL as you can guess is also open source. Having boringssl opensourced does not change anything.
Even if it isn't evicted very often, the first time it is loaded, it will be ~3 times faster, it will take up less storage thus better for others and (probably) easier to render.
I think you and the parent are confusing the display size with phone size. The phone height is >5 inches. The display is 4.7 inches diagonally. The device size diagonally will be more than device height.

I think think that is a different point of view. Isn't it? You are seeing your benefit whereas the author is seeing his. Here's an alternative solution: What if the search engine understood what you were searching for and returned results in all the languages? Unification can result in a lot of information loss the same way a photo can be compressed but it comes at the cost of loss in quality.

But no-one is fragmenting instances of the same character. They _are_ different characters from different languages. To take an example from the article, I am not sure how I feel about combining B and β. You are either ignoring the whole of English speaker population or the greek speaking one. Given that you have complete flexibility to assign a code for both of them, why not do it(responsibly)?
you could try image search. Image search based on an existing image is fairly easy with google image search.
but it's not about Google only. It is about bing, yahoo and ddg too!
Could it be your friends signing up for the service and sharing your information with them. I would assume a lot of companies do this.
I don't think luck plays that big a part. But regardless, As you said, execution is very integral to the success of the project and since Linus, has executed the project so well over the years, it does say something about the execution style(it works and people still support him as well as the way he leads :).
Can you elaborate a bit? I have not used either and would love to know what is different between the two and why you prefer one over the other.
Edit: I saw a few comments about original commenter being a MS employee. To be clear, I am a Google Employee (and ex-msft employee) :). But who our employers are is really besides the point. My question about pros and cons still remains.

As you say, Google's implementation was flawed from start. Doesn't it make sense then to fix it and make things right?
Not sure what you mean by "absolute best applications" since the app on ios is fundamentally limited by the APIs that are provided by the OS. I agree that ios has some of the better apps but I don't think presence of Google Now on ios is better then that on Android.
You will see more "magic" happen as you your the app. I don't know the state of app on ios but on Android, Google slowly learns about your home and office locations, it learns about stocks you search for, places you travel to, movies you search for etc. As a result of this,
- In mornings, I get the traffic to office from my home. - In evenings, I see the travel time back. - When I am visiting a different city/country, I get time, currency and weather updates. If the hotel reservation and flight reservation are in gmail, I also get the latest flight updates, the hotel checkin email etc. - I have the stocks card always on. - On fridays, I get updates on movies that are in theaters. - On weekends and on trips, I get photos of nearby places (I click a lot of photos)
- I am not a sports fan but I have heard that the sports integration is decent and useful too.
Finally, - I have not used the ios app so don't know if that has all the functionality as Android. - I don't know if ios can have always-on apps or hardware shortcuts so I don't know if you can get to it with 0-taps and if it will keep the cards up to date in background.
Actually, that's not completely true.
afaik, India - which is one of the largest democracies in the world follows the legal process in almost all the terror related cases. The fact that they try to adapt their laws to keep up with terrorism is a different story.
I know it is not a perfect solution but there is an Authenticator app that you can use on Android. I believe that iOS might have one too but I am not sure.
This solution does not require you to give them your phone number :).
