My first thought upon seeing the Haptic Music feature is to wonder how long until they make compatible headphones and I can relive my high school years, walking around listening to nu-metal and hip-hop with a Panasonic Shockwave walkman.

People often forget the the first season of many shows (comedies particularly) are particularly ropey while the writers and actors find their groove.

Parent mentioned Picard, well the first season of ST:TNG is a prime example of this. Some of the worst episodes in all of Star Trek are in that season.

Crave recently did the same thing in Canada, got rid of their $9.99 “mobile” plan, and now the $24.99 subscription is the only choice available for new subscribers. I don't understand how that can be true. I put a deposit on a new Hyundai last month and Hyundai Canada is telling me it won't even be built until February 2023, specifically citing chip shortages.

I worked in an academic library where the scale was on the order of hundreds of users per day, but many of those users were faculty/researchers spread out across the globe who got very grumpy when whatever online archive/exhibit was not available.

I migrated our services from a very “pet” oriented architecture to a 4-node Proxmox cluster with Docker Swarm deploying containers across four VMs and it worked great. Services we brought up on this infra still to this date have 100% uptime, through updates and server reboots and other events that formerly would have taken sites offline temporarily.

I looked at k8s briefly and it seemed like total overkill. I probably would have spent weeks or months learning k8s for no appreciable advantage over swarm.

I live in Leafs region and last I checked I think you have to be subscribed to three different premium cable channels to watch all 82 Leafs games.

Similarly frustrating is trying to follow tennis in Canada. There is no comprehensive tennis streaming option, the ATP and WTA use separate apps that each have a $20/month subscription, and do not have rights to show any major tournaments. So for four months out of the year, you’re actually paying $20 for two weeks of tennis coverage, and you also need to pay for TSN streaming if you want to watch the biggest tournaments. All this adds up to $60+tax/month to follow _one_ sport!

Anecdata here, but I owned an HP Spectre 360 laptop a few years ago and I would never buy another HP laptop again. It cost almost as much as a Macbook, and within ~2 years of gentle use, mostly around the house, it blew a speaker, the webcam developed a purple tint, the rubber strips on the base peeled off, and when I tried to open the case to check for a second M.2 slot, one of the Torx screws stripped and remains stuck.

I don’t know much about the technical aspects of microphones, but over the last 10 years or so I’ve listened to a lot of ASMR on YouTube, and I would say the Yeti is a pretty decent microphone. My advice for ASMRtists would be: don’t buy a 3dio. They sound hollow, tinny, and harsh. One of my favorite ASMRtists just “upgraded” to a 3dio from a Yeti and it sounds so much worse. The rich, deep, bassy low components of her voice that made her so unique are gone. IMHO the best sounding mics for ASMR are Rode shotgun models, I think they’re called NT4 or NT5 or something like that; sound amazing.

I have the exact opposite problem. I own at least a dozen game consoles and a gaming PC, and have a huge attach rate for all of them. Games look fun and interesting to me, I watch reviews and follow industry news and get hyped for new games etc, but I spend very little time actually playing them. I rarely spend more than 60 minutes playing a game before I get this weird mix of boredom and anxiety, like the contrivance of the game becomes highly apparent and I feel like I should be doing something else. Despite owning literally hundreds of games, I can count the number of games I've beat/completed on both my hands. I'm nearly 40, married with kids, but this behavior dates back to when I was a youth/teen and had loads of free time.

Nintendo has finally sued too many smart people, and shut down too many fan projects.

I've always wondered, with Nintendo's history of being rather litigious and forcing fans to take down gameplay videos, etc, how have they not sued Roblox out of existence yet? Practically every game I see my kids play on Roblox makes heavy use of unlicensed Nintendo IP: models/images of Mario, Yoshi, Pikachu, well known music and sound effects from various Nintendo games, and so on. Robolox is not some obscure app, AFAIK it has over 150 million users and rakes in money from these games that are making extensive use of Nintendo's IP. IANAL but this seems like a slam dunk, what gives?

I'm not a doctor, but doesn't this actually suggest that the younger the age we can administer COVID-19 vaccines, the stronger the antibody response is likely to be?

I've heard other people say this and in addition to the common response of helping to reduce spread, I wonder: won't those children grow up to become adults who might experience more serious infection/symptoms? Isn't this like the Chicken Pox vaccine that is commonly given to infants because the disease can be more severe when contracted as an adult?

I don't think most people were outraged at FB for _researching_ how Instagram affects teens. What people were outraged about was that upon finding that Instagram appears to have deleterious effects on teen girls, FB a) didn't share these findings with the public or consumers of Instagram, and b) doesn't appear to have done anything to correct or mitigate the negative effect their product appears to have on these people.

I was watching a review of the Pixel 4a on YouTube last night in which the reviewer likes the Pixel 4a and calls the iPhone SE “trash” in comparison because it has bezels. Nevermind that the iPhone will run circles around the 4a in terms of performance and probably receive OS updates for 2-3 years after the 4a is EOL’ed. But no, bezels = “trash”.

I have a Key2 which I bought because I like the physical keyboard, battery life, features, and physical appearance/feel, but I don't buy any of the security/privacy marketing for a second. The phone runs a boatload of services from Google and BlackBerry which I don't know what they're actually doing and you can't turn off or disable without breaking features. I operate under the assumption that Google can (and does) track what I'm doing and where I'm going, even though I've disabled as much of this tracking as the settings allow, and that BlackBerry could decrypt my "secure" file storage locker and bypass my fingerprint/PIN in an instant if they wanted/were compelled to.

I just upgraded from a KeyOne to a Key2 and it's better in just about every way. Twice the storage and RAM, faster CPU, dual camera, more spacious keyboard, cleaner design, more solid construction, and the fingerprint sensor is faster and works better with sweaty fingers (i.e. while running/exercising) than my work-issued iPhone 7.

I've been using Android since the HTC G1 and I'm planning to switch to the iPhone SE after Apple's rumoured March event where they are said to be introducing a 128gb model. I've had it with big phones and lack of OS updates (even on a current-gen flagship Galaxy S7). As far as I know, the only smallish Android phones available make huge sacrifices in performance and storage space, and if my S7 still doesn't have Nougat after 6 months, you can forget about some inexpensive small Android phone.

But that's not who this product is competing with. From TFA: "Mr. Beard positioned the IP-based system as superior to similar services offered by competitors such as Twilio". It's an SDK for building secure voice and text communications into your applications, not a consumer IM service meant to compete with WhatsApp et al. (that would be the consumer BBM app, available in the App/Play Store). Knowing BlackBerry, they will probably be mainly targeting developers in the medical and financial industries with this product.

If you have ~$150, buy a PS Vita. Through the PlayStation store you can purchase dozens of JRPGs like Persona 1 through 4, Final Fantasy I through X, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Legend of Mana, Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire IV, Legend of Heroes series, Harvest Moon series, etc
