You are correct.

It's a financial agreement. Once you make all the payments, you own it. It's up to to you negotiate a payment plan that works for your business.

It can also be:

1. Lease the domain with a small cash outlay per month

2. Prove your business model

3. Make money

4. Make a balloon payment for an agreed-upon purchase price (prior to the contract signing) at the end of, say, 3 years term.

This gives the buyer a way to walk away if the business doesn't work out, but lock up the domain from others buying it out from under you in case your business is getting traction.

What's to be learned from this?

Server setting needed hardening?

Software needed updating and was vulnerable?

@ez77: It's a factor to consider, not the end-all, be-all deciding factor.

I was going to purchase a five letter domain name for $2,000 a couple of years ago. It was way under priced for a standard english word dot com domain name. Turns out he moved it from place place, and when I asked the seller why he had a terrible answer. I think it might have been a stolen name but I couldn't prove it. In the end, the lack of clarity was enough to convince me not to buy it.

That's all this article is supposed to do: help people figure out domain names and, in this case, figure out if there might be trouble associated with a premium domain name.

This is a great point, and likely you'll win a UDRP because the registrant will ignore the request (if they're guilty). However, filing a UDRP costs about $1,300.

Entrepreneurs should always register the domain name BEFORE you register for your company.

3D domain names are hot with domain investors so I would suspect this was not an example of domain name front running, especially if it was a week later.

mcurving got most of this correct. Most large registrars will auto renew the domain on behalf of their customers as a "service." this gives you time to notice no email coming in and your domain/website not working. Most will allow you to renew for the regular renewal fee while others will up charge for the renewal. Then, if it doesn't get renewed, the registrar will auction the domain name if of high worth (links coming in, traffic, etc.). It then goes to the highest bidder. If no one bids, it gets deleted. Note: some registrars do not auction (very few).

@ohashi: It's not a big problem anymore as you npointed out. However, the way domain name tasting was reduced (i.e. The financial penalty that was put in place) does not eliminate the practice entirely. It is not illegal as stated by ICANN. That was the point of my article, and how people should protect themselves.

@JoachimSchipper: That is a good question. I'll need to do some research on that.

It's not a big problem anymore, but as I point out in the article a) it can happen a small percentage of the time and b) many registrars ARE in conflict of interest with their customers.

This is a commonplace-type issue with all public documents. For example, every time I am granted a trademark (which are publicly published upon grant), I receive a letter on official-looking stationary sayingnincan protect my trademark for $3,000. It's a complete racket by a company with an official sounding name but unaffiliated with the USPTO.

What do you mean by "querying the top level .com servers directly"? How are you doing that?

Yes, any ISP would likely have a substantial delay in collecting, filtering and selling this type of data, which is why I think DNFR is most likely happening at registrars. I'm just presenting the facts that there are "middlemen" in the process that people should know about. Thanks for helping me clarify.

$15K or $6K per year is a big deal in the first few years of your working life. It becomes much less important a metric later in life. Especially so when you look at all factors involved in a particular job: bureaucracy, a^ole boss, jerky workmates, long hours, too much water cooler gossip, hurry-up and wait, short notice deadlines, etc. Many of my friends would gladly take a pay cut to "own their life" and work from home, for example.

Who else would you work with (i.e., display advertising for) without having the ability to speak to someone by telephone when a difficult situation has occurred? None of our customers would tolerate this -- why do we continue to allow Google to get away with it?

I'm not saying this author is right or deserving of the revenue (I don't have all the details or facts), but what is clear is that he has: 1. Earned Google a good bit of revenue 2. Appears earnest 3. Deserves to interact with a real human in a real way (not by automated emails without the ability to reply)

So, everything at Mint.com isn't open source, as many non-technical reports make it sound like. It's just some of the technologies...and much (or most?) of the code itself was written by Mint.com employees prior to the sale?

Then I tried doing some Google searches to find the details (which I couldn't) and found the Github site listed in a related article (now I think un-related), but no other details...so I posted the question on HN to see if anyone heard the real story and could share it.

That's a great idea! I may try to incorporate some word problems into the app to tie together reading comprehension with basic math skills.

My wife and I agree that we should not reward our children for things we consider a requirement of being a part of our family: education, chores, charity, manners, etc.

That being said, I think there's no reason why kids can't have more fun while they're learning. And if it helps them study/practice longer, what's the harm?

I think the novelty comes in exactly what you state, and I think that the educational system relies too heavily on the status quo. There would be nothing wrong with a classroom posting pictures of Harry Potter and couching a lesson in the Harry Potter clothes in order to drive more student involvement. It's no different than when Jeopardy was popular 10 years ago and Jeopardy-like student challenges spread across schools.

With respect to the copyright infringement aspect, I hope that is not the case. I believe that many people are visual learners and seeing an example can have a much more powerful result than a mere description. It was with that intention that I posted the video. I do not plan to distribute the app as that would clearly be in copyright violation.
