I disagree, Flash and Canvas are not suitable for displaying large number of objets. Using zoomable maps is a good workaround for that.

Google Maps needs an API key, whereas Seadragon doesn't and its a simple JS file < 100ko.

Yes there is a bug with drag. I just filled a bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/gephi/+bug/546986

I'm gephi main dev. That will be fixed with better documentation asap. You can add nodes and edges by using "Node Pencil" and "Edge Pencil" tools in the toolbar.

The coordinate system is obtained from a force-directed algorithm. Iteratively linked nodes attract each others, whereas non-linked repulse.

And to search, go to the "Data Laboratory" and filter. Right-click on a row and "Select on graph". Then go back to the graph, the camera is centered on the node.

Gephi supports CSV imput already and has some plans to make assistant plugins to import data from other sources like Excel files, RDF or XML.
