This was the solid book to get into data science and ML scene. Covers everything. Jake is a fantastic teacher. I really wish he comes up with updated second edition.

I am amateur and more or less an ignorant in programming domain so what I say doesn't matter much.

Why not a pick a language of choice and write some ambitious framework/library? Like Numpy/Pandas for Python. Maybe a web development framework? That way, there is a reasonable chance your work will be noticed or used. Look Maybe pick Julia and write a library for it. I believe Julia doesn't have as many libraries as Python does.

By the way, as much as I know, all the languages were written by 'old' people. Young people rarely have that much knowledge or experience. They don't even know one language fully well. So age is actually at your side.

This sort of overemphasized paranoia about security is something which makes me, I dunno, irritated. If you decide to go to extreme, everything is unsafe but you don't want an old device even as a secondary device?

Whatsapp has already started stinking. These days I get many spam-ish messages from verified enterprises. As of now I am getting notification related messages from entities I am using services of but some of them have started sending spams. Although it is tolerable as of now but I can see where this is going. Too bad Whatsapp is defacto messaging app in India. So much so that even gov organizations are using it to interact with citizens.

I am 40 yrs old and English is my second language. I cant give you some specific examples but when I watch old hollywood movies (50-60s), I mostly understand dialogues. Dialogues from modern movies are a bit harder to understand and I cant watch any movie without subtitle.

I am currently typing this on a 4 years old shitty Xiaomi budget mobile phone. I don't recall if I've ever updated mobile software (or if there was an update available) but my phone is working as good as it should. So far I haven't seen any problem in installing any app. I don't see myself replacing this phone in next 6 month at least.

If you ignore his strong opinions, it can be good. Although he was (is?) very much hated back in the day (when Python 2 was still mainstream), many many noobs did benefitted from his book. So I'd say give it a try.

You are probably thinking backward. I am not an expert in evolutionary biology but the beauty of flowers is something which has helped them survive. Flowers themselves didn't decide to be beautiful or they don't even know that they are beautiful. Remember that evolution is blind. It is just that their beauty was in the eyes of beholders and those beholders helped them survive.

I am bugged by this question too. I've stopped reading newspapers 8 years ago. Closed FB account 7 years ago. Never been on IG or Tiktok. Never watched more than 2 YouTube Videos in a month. Twitter? 10 minutes in every three days and I only read tweets about STEM topics. Heck, I don't even join WhatsApp groups. Reddit and HN is what I browse. I very rarely post on Reddit and stay away from all political posts. The amount of time I spend on Reddit is gradually decreasing.

So that leaves me with HN. I like HN because topics I encounter here are not nonsensical or political. There are no memes, gifs or cheap jokes here. I find myself in awe of the knowledge people have here. I am forced to read stuff here rather than fast paced casual browsing. As a meme reads, "On Internet, typing is fun and reading is hard" but HN is exact opposite of that for me.

But deep inside my heart, I know HN is also a social media in many ways and I need to cut down the time I spend on this. I am addicted to this. I realized browsing HN is essentially a coping mechanism for my depression and lifelong failures. HN gives me a false sense of "look I am not wasting my time in frivolous stuff". HH helps me escape from harsh realities of my life in much the same ways drinking helps people cope with their life. In subtle ways, HN has polluted my mind and corrupted my ability to think in realistic ways.

Likes of SBF or Holmes should be punished more harshly. They had access to all the resources in the world, the resources poor people dont even know exist. They were educated from the institutes not everyone can afford. They never had to worry about next meal. They have all the high profile contacts. And what did they choose to do? To fraud people. Your comment simply reeks of elitism. Imagine a poor all clean chap comes to you for a job. You wouldn't offer him any, given the logic in your comment. What will he do next? Commit another crime. Most common people dont commit crime out of choice. They are forced to commit crimes again and again.

In Most cases, it is the society which forces them to do shit. The same is not true for SBF or Holmes. They chose to fraud people out of choice.

I am not interested in sports but when I was in my teens, no other name was associated with any sport as was the name of Pele with football. As you said, it seemed no one was interested in football but everyone knew Pele was the god of his game.

I am from India (and never been to US). Even in India, people recognise MIT as the best institute all over the world. It does carry very high brand value. Even for me, if someone has done STEM studies in MIT or Stanford, I'd value them very highly.

I am certainly not alluding that Einstein was great at maths. But I do think he was good enough.

von Neuman is someone I think was a beast but he was more of a mathrmatician than a physicist (at least I think so).

In my case, when I was studying, I had all the time in the world. During that time, I did try to learn many things but I didn't go deep or weren't consistent. I mostly wasted times in goofing around. Looking back, the amount of time I wasted during college years has become a biggest pain of my current life when I don't have any skill or time to learn those skills.
