I ran google adwords on specific key terms, this helped to get a decent bulk of work with a 20x ROI

Over time your network will build up.

Edinburgh is the place to be, although i live northern ireland- having been over for the recent fringe and talked to some imigrant workers, they couldnt be happier.

A nice apartment would run you about £550/$800 a month which is a tad dear but its a great city with so much going on.

A walk around the museum will show you a place that was built on inventions and innovation.

my biggest gripe with mac os having recently moved from windows is hitting the maximise button on finder and it barely filling half the screen.

I think some of the docs should be better structured in terms of seo as some of the deprecated functions index higher in google than the currently supported classes/methods

I work remote as a developer- mainly doing web based stuff

Advantages- .No IT jobs locally that i like to work for (mainly high stress financial based IT jobs) .Choose where I work from- I could work from home but I rent a desk in a communal office to be around other developers/entrepreneurs .communication is cheap- use skype .if this contract doesnt work out i feel i could move on to something easier rather than being a full time employee in an office .Never met my boss :)

Disadvantages .Spec gets lost- without proper procedures i find myself sitting doing nothing as boss is nowhere to be seen .you cant nag someone when ya see them. i.e. if your waiting on an email you cant shout across the room at them - you have to lift the phone or get them on skype.

overall i enjoy the experience and some of my main issues are more internal issues- but remote working is made so easy now with the likes of gmail, pivotaltracker, skype, dropbox and google docs

edit- some of the other comments say it can be quite lonely- i work in a communal office and i go to the gym every night after office hours just to get out of the office or away from home

i was asked to be a technical reviewer on a book with apress, i felt really good about reviewing and agreed.

When i received the first few chapters i realized the book would have to be re-written. The English was bad and the code was mediocre.

Since it wasn't a paid gig i felt insulted with the experience, the book would require days if not weeks of work to complete rather than a few hours which i had thought.

helps if you have to drive home from the office after 12 hours, colleagues complained not being able to see other cars clearly

the video made it for me- humble how it started with just him walking in through the front doors, then walk on stage with no warm up act and no announcements.

Nothing was over produced, human from start to finish
