I'm a CTO in Zürich, Switzerland.

Technology generalist - interested in technical leadership, leading high performing teams, engineering management, product management and product development.

I enjoy being outdoors and outdoor activities including hiking and skiing. I also enjoy researching/learning/practicing sustainability, reading, and drinking tea.

I have an MBA and I can code too. Deal with it.

Picstars AG | Backend Engineer - Golang | Zürich | REMOTE (Europe) | https://picstars.com

At Picstars we are building a full service platform for brands to easily run influencer marketing campaigns - everything from finding the right matching influencers, creating campaign proposals, defining image overalys, social post monitoring and statistics and automated payments to influencers.

We are a small but powerful and efficient team. You will work directly alongside the CTO (me) and a few other engineers to build the backend tech stack. We are currently building all new parts of our platform in Go using AWS lambda plus various other AWS technologies. I am looking for someone with Go experience who has already written and deployed production-level code. Bonus points if you also know PHP/Laravel because let's face it...we all have legacy systems :)

This is a REMOTE position for people located in Europe, structured as a B2B contract. You will receive a time off allowance and local holidays, plus a few trips a year to our Zürich office to meet with the team. You will join an existing distributed team that is used to working remotely.

Tech stack/buzzwords: Go, Golang, Serverless, Lambda, AWS, React

Please reach out with questions or if you are interested! josh.mauk[~at~]picstars.com

I consider Glacier as the final offsite backup in the event my apartment burns down or something terrible happens to all of my local backups. In that case I don't care about how long it might take to restore - I will throttle the recovery as needed to not blow the AWS budget.

Jib is right. ESPN app is terrible in Europe. The web version is Flash-based, constantly drops me to lowest quality adaptive-streaming despite 100mbit fiber, and many other problems. iPad version does the same thing too, only natively :)

NFL Gamepass is MUCH better, although the web version is still Flash.

I just got an email yesterday from Amex about suspicious activity on my account. The card was used to make purchases from at least three dating sites, groupon, Microsoft, hidemyip, and a handful of others.

This card is tied to Linode, Amazon, and one or two other large merchants. Sure looks like Linode CC numbers were breached.

Presumably a poor translation from a Scandanivian language to English. For example, in Swedish you use the reflexive verb "lära" which means both to learn and to teach. In Swedish you would say "lära dig" which does translate literally to English as "learn you" but which should get the more appropriate translation of "teach yourself".

Both agencies and contractors employee people with the skillsets needed to write these kinds of things. While there are a large number of incompetent government employees and contractors, there are also a small number of frighteningly talented developers working in this area.

Highly disappointed in the WaPo. This read like a PR piece released by the oil industry and/or their lobbyists. No mention of the environmental disaster looming from the tarsands? No mention of the effects from fracking? No discussion about how this will only delay much needed investment in renewables by the US Government?

I, as an American, decided to move to Sweden for all of the reasons GP posted, and despite your list of supposed downsides. A few observations after six months here:

* The Swedish summer more than makes up for the dark winter. Not that much colder than Chicago either.

* Taxes are high, but the benefits you get from the taxes are astounding, especially from an American perspective. Great roads, clean cities, amazing public transit, free healthcare, etc.

* Six weeks of vacation, over a year of maternity leave, etc. Enough said.

* Yes, the rental market in Stockholm sucks.

Honestly, Sweden is truly a democratic model that other countries should try following. I'm very happy with my decision to move here and wish I had discovered it sooner.

A classic sign of a bubble is when you start getting unsophisticated (non-professional) investors that only see money and start chasing the successes of others. Two huge examples from the past 15 years:

1. Tech bubble. Everyone and their brother became day-traders, chasing the hot stocks and trying to make their fortune. People were throwing their retirement savings, spare cash, anything they had into tech companies trying to make a quick buck.

2. Housing bubble. Everyone and their brother became flippers, chasing the hot properties and trying to make their fortune. People were throwing their retirement savings, spare cash, anything they had into properties trying to make a quick buck.

Copy/paste intentional.

To all the naysayers: there's no way you can read this and not come to the conclusion that we're in the middle of a huge bubble.

What he's talking about has already been written about and is taught in many MBA programs.

Blue Ocean Strategy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Ocean_Strategy

Edit for the tl;dr crowd:

The blue ocean strategy is about creating your own market/niche/space in an new or uncontested area (blue ocean) vs. competing directly with established players in an existing market (red ocean).

The metaphor is the red ocean is full of blood from the sharks fighting over the same profits/market share while the blue ocean is open water full of opportunity.
