IMO no degree is necessary or worth the money today for doing software/computer related things, there's virtually nothing you'd be taught in classes you can't learn with an internet connection.

See if you live in one of these localities, you might be able to stay where you are for a while. Even if not, eviction proceedings usually take at least a month.

The assertion that restaurants failing in the wake of the government mandating them to close in response to a once in a lifetime pandemic is evidence of them being unviable as an industry is utterly laughable.

Keep code as simple as possible, shun abstractions until the refactor stage, adopt a language / toolchain that enforces a modular / functional discipline. EDIT: also, reading the comments here - absolutely shun DRY, be very explicit with code and don't try to couple anything until its absolutely clear that is the way to go. This in my opinion is the true mark of somebody experienced with codebases that grow unmanageable vs the less initiated -- the latter are always trying to reduce code by coupling things into abstractions, the former wait until it absolutely makes sense.

Game development is exceptionally fun and engaging as far as software goes, so the supply/demand ratio is much more skewed. I would agree people are likely aware of the worse working conditions and pay etc, but are just passionate about it enough to do it anyway. I was an amateur game developer that always imagined a career in game dev but after learning about the economics of it went with more general commercial software as a career, but I still envy game devs for the work they get to do and their overall satisfaction with that work.

--EDIT: It's also worth noting that if you are on the digital content side of game dev like modeling and mapping there's not a ton of alternative options for practicing those skillsets professionally, unlike programming.

It would go a long way to package this such that somebody on a mac can just download it and run, or install with brew. Also after disabling security, chmoding +x, and attempting several patterns on the command line I could not get this to run, each time spitting various errors i.e. "Could not find notebooks in .: Error while looking for notebooks: skip this directory", "Could not find notebooks in /Users/mfrey: Error while looking for notebooks: open /Users/mfrey/Library/Application Support/CallHistoryDB: operation not permitted" etc.. maybe I'm just an idiot but at this point of dysfunction in a program I'm experimenting with for kicks, my capacity to continue futzing with it is exhausted, just FYI.

A lot of cynicism in the comments here, but having an optimistic outlook has been a boon throughout history in almost all accounts. It's definitely harder today with all of the mass media and the constant negativity, but in my opinion it's hard to argue with the logic.. positive energy yields positive results.. at least more so than negative energy

It's the hard truth. As it is, there's just no way to solve the problem without some sort of global cataclysm. I think people in power have the logistics to know this, which is why I'm so skeptical about the political movement today in western nations that largely revolves around consolidating power over world energy even further into the hands of a small group of elites that more or less exist beyond the reach of any one nations political process.

It is outrageous because in both instances we're talking about actual legal citizens being persecuted by their own government for belonging to an ethnic group, not a group of foreign nationals that illegally entered the country and are being held temporarily for criminal prosecution.

The problem is google isn't just a search engine it's the information seeking megalith of our time. That little text input takes what you give it, determines what the hell you're trying to figure out, and delivers results on a level that just vastly supersedes anything else. I love the concept of DDG and would greatly prefer to use it, it's just a painfully inferior tool and shows no signs of coming close to what google offers.

A nuanced response, but my main point is about self censorship, what does one do if ultimately their conclusion is contradictory to their opponents. Acquiesce to maintain the peace or state their claim? I personally will always back truth regardless of its comfort to the audience whoever they might be

This is absolutely false. Having lost 160 lbs over the course of two years I can say it is absolutely possible to continue losing weight from calorie restriction. Does it get harder to lose the same amount of weight? Absolutely. You are getting lighter and your base metabolic rate diminishes. You have to eat less food or do more exercise to maintain the same deficit. In reality, your burn rate just goes down. I was initially losing 3.5 lbs a week not even trying, in the end it was down to maybe half a pound a week in the final weeks. Your body doesn't enter some magical mode at 6 mos though, of course if you don't change what you're doing you will plateau in line with your decreasing BMR, but it just means you have to keep tweaking the formula of energy in vs out or accept a slower rate of fat loss. The exercise in itself though is pretty much entirely psychological.

This is a very false assumption, genetics absolutely do play a role in how much fat from dietary intake will be stored vs expelled as waste. Burning fat on the other hand, is universal and follows the law of conservation referred to in my other comment.

It kind of is actually. Nobody escapes the law of universal conservation of energy. Sure some people due to genetics will store more of the energy they consume as fat than others. But if you have an energy deficit the body will consume itself to the tune of that exact deficit, period, end of. It will be a mixture of fat and muscle, but the body does try to maintain muscle to the extent you are utilizing it given there is sufficient protein to maintain it. So lift weights or do resistance training enough to keep the muscle you wish to retain and maintain a good amount of protein intake to support this as well, and the bulk of your body mass consumed will be fat. Other than that it is just maintaining an energy deficit, and the best technique is the one you personally can adhere to consistently.

That's unfortunately what HN comments has become, a popularity contest where instead of replying to views you disagree with using counter arguments, you just downvote them and if their statement particularly offends your sensibilities, flag them.

I take issue with him blanket categorizing Rich Hickey and clojure (spelled closure by him none the less) in the first category along the same lines as haskell. These languages are quite different in almost all respects minus being functional. While the focus of clojure is on simplicity and expressiveness as the author does mention, it was fundamentally created to be a builders language and for getting stuff done fast with minimal complexity and headaches. I think it is actually a perfect mix between the first category and the third category, which is why I love it so much.

A legislative debate, which is my entire point. People aren't showing anywhere near the level of vitriol that ICE receives towards the local police for enforcing laws that are IMO far more ridiculous. Currently in many states people are torn from their families to be placed in cages and children are dumped into facilities because their parents possessed a benign plant which happens to be legal in a plurality of states -- there's no outrage because there's not the full force of the zeitgeist beaming it through the telescreens as a crisis for political purposes. I don't agree with any of it personally but just have to scoff at the hypocrisy.

If you're caught for these things you face the associated consequences

I get the comment is a bit snarky, but if you dig into this guys site it's required that you have worked 3+ years at a "top tier company" with a rotating ticker of FAANG and other giant SV behemoths on it's front page ad, which IMO is fairly pretentious and warrants a bit of a call out.
