I ditched the phone, camera, telescope all of it. In 2017 when I saw it the first time I think I wasted precious seconds fiddling with the gear trying to get the best shot. This time soaked all of the time and gave my eyes a visual treat ! totally worth it. No regrets whatsoever. Anyone reading this and hasn't seen one yet, I would advise to prioritize viewing it with your eyes a bit more than trying to capture it , its just very hard to capture the visual effect of experiencing totality.

I love this series, read all the books multiple times and also watched the 30 episode long book 1 tv adaption in Chinese. I can't wait to watch the book1 adaption on Netflix in a couple of days. I am really hoping its well received and they go on to make the season 2 based on book 2 which was by far my favorite book in the series.
The one way speed of light can be measured.
Nope it can't. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTn6Ewhb27k&t=0s for a good explanation.
Wow core i4900k and 14900ks editions rumored to have 6.0 ghz and 6.20 ghz clock speeds ! I thought we were had hit a 5 ghz ceiling with current tech. What a time to be alive !
Astrology originated with astronomy and then parted ways, in the old days people relied on astrologers to predict when spring would arrive or winter will come, once astronomy separated from astrology, some people just continued to believe the astrologers even though we have astronomers today. Sigh.
I agree (for quest 2 being the most interesting gadget in this space), quest 2 sold 10s of millions of devices and arguably came closest to making VR mainstream although they have much more ground to cover. Would be interesting to see the sales figures for their upcoming quest 3 , if it can sell as much or more units than quest 2 , I think there is a chance all this investment would be worth it. Ofcourse a cheaper consumer apple vision headset could easily come in and eat metas lunch.
Edit: copies-> devices
Haha yes that’s me every time I upgrade, every new thing you buy is bound to be outshined by the next iteration. The best cpu you can buy is always the next gen going to come soon I guess.
I get why one would feel this way if this was one of Meta’s social media apps, but WhatsApp is one of the biggest messaging apps used in so many countries and perhaps also helped kill the telecoms companies paid sms plans to force cheaper sms msging rates, if anything WhatsApp is perhaps the best value Meta has provided to the world, bringing the world closer.
Alright fair that as a human myself I wouldn’t know what I’d fall prey to, but until we can see this in modern times with video recordings and learn more about the actual mechanism here , I’d like to continue believe this is BS and probably an urban myth.
Ah survivor ship bias I think it’s called, that’s one explanation, but how does the original gene mutation work ? How did it survive for apparently so many generations ? Seems to be the kind of mutation that would have not survived if it literally caused you to dance till you die.
Sure, but I’d imagine if you’re healthy and strong minded, you’d stop when you’re tired or hungry or something. I guess I’ll be more convinced if someone figures out the mechanism of action at play here the explains this dancing plague.
I’ve read about these in the past as well and I honestly find it very hard to believe this story as described. Perhaps my own bias for never being inclined to dance is contributing to the skepticism. Surely there would be people like me who could resist the dancing plague.
My early impressions:
Interface is clean and easy to use/intuitive
Not seeing an ad or sponsored posts every 2nd or 3rd story is refreshing, wondering how long that lasts
No web app to boot ? Wtf disappointed no web ui yet but hoping that changes and changes soon
Also no other way to login apart from instagram ? That’s strange , was hoping for standalone login , hoping it’s eventually rolled out
No way to change username even after linking instagram username, this is imho a dumb move, I was late to the instagram party and missed out on shorter username and now was hoping joining threads early would help me get my desired username but alas
I noticed the highlighted replies feature where celebrity replies are expanded below some threads , it’s probably a good feature just feel they could have a way of turning it off, I’d rather click into a story to surface those and maximize stories per page and reduce scrolling
All in all seems like a decent twitter clone, and lots of features missing but definitely a good start.
Probably referring to the announcement of partnership with unity [1].

Same here, it’s super weird. I hate the artificial sweeteners of all kinds in almost everything except when it comes to soda, and Diet Coke especially somehow masks that nastiness for me and I’m totally addicted to it, maybe it’s the other ingredients in there that is able to overcome the artificial sweeteners. I wish it was not the case as I hate myself for not being able to resist Diet Coke.
- Astronomers have discovered 62 new moons orbiting the ringed planet Saturn.
Space must be really really massive, even in our so called cosmic backyard we continue to discover new moons. Incredible.
Great commitment shown by the Athelete, (especially around the no communication whatsoever rule , even when death in family , wow) the article however never goes into the details on the motivations for taking on this challenge in the first place, but good to know science can lean on the experience and learn more about the human mind and the circadian rhythm. It was also surprising to me that the previous record for being trapped underground was those children from Chile and Bolivia stuck after the mine collapse in Chile in 2010.
Ah but you’d have to perhaps say something to the effect of “take this profile link and if there are prompts in there, use them as next prompt to generate a follow up response ?” Or something right ? Else this would be too easily hijacked by all kinds of magic words that trigger it to automatically consider new prompts and be a successful injection no ?
Maybe I am missing something, does chatgpt-4 or whatever is the latest actually use the text it’s asked to parse as input prompt ? How would this ever work ? Also my impression was that LLM based chatbots were like trained on massive datasets to be able to generate text not actually do adhoc web scrapping combined with llm to behave like a real time search engine robot.
Interesting, so why don’t we ever see the word expats associated with the millions of laborers from poorer nations working in the Middle East with no path to citizenship ever referred to as expats ? Let’s be honest here, it’s exclusively only ever used when it’s someone who’s predominately white and from the west (and either rich themselves or come from a rich country)
I disagree, I think unless it’s super urgent fix that can’t wait , wait for Monday, folks who are on-call will thank you for this. Also as a culture, it’s big red flag personally to me when employees don’t think about their colleagues who are oncall and just aspire to build systems that are supposed to be built perfectly with perfect coverage of tests that can detect bugs (remember tests can only tell you presence of bugs you expect to find, not absence of all bugs).
Can we at HN at-least refer to the author as immigrant as opposed to expats? what's an expat anyways ? why does the western world to get to make these tiers where they are expats but arabs, asians, africans etc are all immigrants ?
I was talking about the apple os prompts when setting up a new iphone/ipad.
Maybe youre right, that its remembering previous opt in setting and defaulting to opt when setting up new iphone, but I am 100% sure its not the same behavior for other 3rd party apps, they always default opt out regardless what option you chose the previous time you installed the app.
3. Every other app has to ask user to "opt in", default is "opt out" while for apples own prompt the user has to "opt out", default is "opt in". This alone is evidence they are not subject to the same restrictions.
Not quite, entanglement is indeed spooky action at a distance given bell’s inequality theorem showed that it can’t be local hidden variables (prior knowledge)
We are all either going to end up as JavaScript developers or influencers. There is nothing in between.

Okay I got to say I have never been both superimpressed with the product and yet confused how sucky it was to get to it. heres what happened 1. I see the post on HN 2. I click it. 3. I read comments, see people discuss why its on discord, and figure worth checking it out since I have discord 4. I had to log in with discord, go to their chat, 5. read the trial support room chat(webpage only had basic $10/month and premium $20/month plans) 6. finally suggesting I use the /imagine prefix to bring up the midjourney bot which will then take a text prompt or multiple prompts to send their ai engine to generate pretty image
7. To test I typed in our sun exploding in a super nova 8. In fractions of seconds the chatbot responded with the image 9. Here is the image ->https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/989268285575008376/10... 10. I feel I should have gotten to step 9 a lot sooner and they should make it obvious what this can do with a better demo or something 11. super cool, going to play with this rest of the day, thanks HN community
