This is something I'd love, great idea.

I've never understood why any service should need my card details if I'm signing up for a free trial. I now don't sign up to free trials that require payment details up front because, often, there isn't any warning before the trial period ends and a large charge can then get taken.

If I like your service and it's useful to me after the free trial ends I'll sign up and add my payment details.

I'm probably just cynical before my time but I see it as preying on people who are forgetful, to take their money.

In answer to your question though. I'd send a reminder it's polite.

Until recently my salary working as a PHP developer was £22K in the NE of England. As a senior dev £30k.

I also cycle my commute. When I used to cycle to the old office this was 14 mile commute on a variety of surfaces. When I initially rode on the road I would gutter crawl; cars would pass real close.

Then I read a few tips on cycling safer and realised that my gutter crawling was actually very dangerous as cars will try to squeeze past to overtake. I don't know how confident you are but for me, riding a third into the lane at all times has improved my safety as cars will now only overtake if they have a ton of room and they'll always go way over into the other lane to do it. I will also take the full lane if I feel I need to. I essentially just needed to be more confident. YMMV

These people want to be left alone and should be left alone. They've survived for 65000 years on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. I'd say the rest of the "developed" world has something to learn from the way these people sustain themselves without, looking from the outside in, destroying a beautiful tropical island.

I am currently reading this due to another post about this same guy a couple of weeks back. I would highly recommend it, though it is truly upsetting, I have to keep reminding myself that what this man went through was/is real.

Secondly I have a very strange and irrational relationship with smartphones and I've never really been able to explain it. I always have a phone that does far to much, much more than I will ever actually use it for. I don't think this is a valid point. When you arrange an appointment, meeting or lunch with another party/parties/business for a specific time and duration then surely that's no longer "your schedule" but rather "our schedule" and it is the responsibility of both parties to honor that schedule, it's just polite.

If the US were to arrest him on arrival when they have pretty much inferred he has nothing to fear, that would be something else. I would hope regardless of ethnic origin that the UK government would do everything in its power to have the citizen released.

I'm not really clued up on the Northern Ireland conflicts, I do however find the idea of locking people up without trial and keeping them detained for long periods of time, barbaric, regardless of what they are accused of.

Not at all, as long as you as the parent decides what can and can not be viewed by your children. What is authoritarian though is the government deciding that for you and imposing that nation wide.

I guess what I was trying to say is:

Though you aren't financially profiting. You still gain publicity through this promotion at a time when the product you are offering is likely to be the last thing on many people in the affected areas mind. IMO it's a little distasteful.

I do however understand that it's done with the best intentions. I also agree with points made by others that maybe a different action might have come across more positive at a time like this (donations to a charity etc).

I'm nowhere near the disaster area being in the U.K but are there charities directly involved in clearing up the mess and helping people out that you could have donated to?

I understand that it's not likely to be intentionally indiscriminate, however when the civilian casualty rate is so high it sure does seem indiscriminate.

Whilst I agree in part to the point you make, that Pakistan should be dealing with terrorists that use it as a safe haven.

I can not agree with your sentiment that because Pakistan does not, America therefore has a right to fly drones into its land to indiscriminately kill.

Leading questions are good, I don't advocate people just telling the answer directly and I follow your approach in terms of leading questions. From the examples you give I would suggest you aren't the kind of sanctimonious pick that I was trying to describe.

The example I was giving and probably not stating clearly enough, was of a member, who on a number of occasions has approached other team members and asked questions out of context like an on the spot quiz.

As an aside to my first post it's also interesting to see the people that will openly admit whether they have messed up.

Anecdotally it is usually the people who are less willing to share their knowledge that will try and shift the blame.

In my experience, which, granted is limited (3.5 years programming), one or two team members I work with very rarely share their insights.

In the case of these team members I think one comes down to fear of maybe looking daft in front of the rest of the team by saying something that they think might be wrong. The other can just be a sanctimonious prick and will ask people questions that they simply wont know the answer to, to show them up in front of the rest of the office.

So in my experience fear is certainly a factor holding a person back. However on the flip side a person lording his knowledge over other people but not sharing it in a useful way conducive to improving the general programming knowledge of the team.

They both harm the team but in different ways. I don't know how these two problems can be solved though. Maybe encouraging opinion from the people who fear sharing their points of view and being supportive of them would help.

I'm at a loss though with regards to the power-bitches that like to make people look small with their own knowledge.

However half written sentences make me think you don't really know what you're talking about and I immediately begin to subtract credibility.
