Thanks for blogging this. Today I had my Account manager and another support person from Heroku pushing me to add that experimental feature, so I could see the memory usage of our dynos. I had reported on twitter and in a support ticket that the memory reported by newRelic didn't match the values that our Account Manager sent me. He sent me this because we were trying to add 4 Unicorn processes to a 1 Gig Dyno, and newRelic was reporting our app never went over 256MB. Our Account manager sent a different trace of memory usage.

I have lost all faith in the values that newRelic reports that come from Heroku.

Its like you were reading my mind. I definitely agree that getting discouraged by the lack of progress on my Forever Project is misspent energy.

hmexx I think this is a pretty good opportunity. However as others have commented its not so easy to just drop all client work for 2 months, especially when you have responsibilities.

Apart from that I think its a brilliant idea!

I am a father of 2 kids, any side project will mean time away from them, and I don't care what anyone says, I prefer to have a balanced life any day. I also find my ability to work during normal hours (9am to 9pm, as I am freelancer) during the week is enhanced by my down time with the family!

I interpretted the recognition to be of the actual wireframes itself, which allows for the user experience at the wireframe stage. Is that correct?

Just this week we had an issue with a web application I am working on, where we had 3 forms to get started using our application, which we thought was ok. Then our commercial team complained that there were too many steps. We realized after they screen shotted each step that before the 3 forms there were 3 more pages to get to that point.

With the pentotype service we would of seen and addressed this issue months ago, instead of now when we are losing too many people in the funnel. Please let me know when its available for testing! @mark_ellul

I have earned a decent income for my company using odesk.com Basically, you just need to make sure your profile is up to date, and prove that even though are more expensive, than $10 an hour coders, you are worth it.

I would work on my dream/future project of creating software that functions like the human brain!

Great Suggestion about the "Don't worry about competition"... The other day I saw something similar to the service I want to do, and at first disheartened me... but if I don't try I will never succeed or fail, just be disheartened! ;)

Interesting Point, I will be funding this myself, the 2 weeks I would use is time to get a alpha product ready! So when I am setting up rest of the business I have something to show for!

Thanks Vaksel for your advice... Indeed quitting everything is not an option, but potentially taking a holiday is...

After 4yrs developing on the MSFT stack, I can say that it provides a nice end 2 end experience, especially using VS IDE. Now with Mono your deployment options are more open as well, which I find useful.

My only gripe is the cost of the stack, if you are hosting your own servers. I also found it hard to debug live environments, as it was hard to do introspection without bring the whole system to a halt.

Hi Felix, Unfortunately, the software we are hosting is not our own. We prefer to use open source solutions, however the software we need to host runs on Windows Only. Its .NET and Delphi I think. So we just need general Windows hosting. Thanks for your response. Mark

I would say odesk is is good for 1 reason only.... you can see snapshots of what the UI developer is working on as they do it. So you should be able to see if they are going down the right track early before they finish!

It depends if its pure GUI or UI ... I think you should split up the project into 2... GUI is to get design and colour scheme. UI is to get the interactions you want and the flow...

We have used odesk, and we found that we can get GUI design done, but UI is really dependant on your target user market... This is difficult to outsource unless you really direct what you want done...

Second that... That book is a great starting point... to get you thinking
