Love Peter Watts' work but be warned that his writing is super depressing (in a good way), specially his Rifters Trilogy. My favorites are still Blindsight and it's follow-up, Echopraxia. The ideas on those books about sentient life are eye opening and something I still think is heavily debated in the scientific community.

I'm a bit conflicted about these books. The ideas are super interesting but the characters seem very "cardboard-like". Also they are bit too long and by the 3rd book I didn't care anymore... Still, pretty interesting on their own.

How's Wayland + Gnome working for fractional scaling in HiDPI screens? Last time I tried some applications like Chrome, Firefox and others would be all blurry.

In the past I've used Hashicorp Vault to handle this kind of situation. Granted, it's an additional piece of infrastructure to manage but Vault has been pretty solid for this kind of situation and others where you need to safely manage secrets.

Most companies that I see using Bitbucket do so not because it's a good product but because it's usually cheap when you are already paying for JIRA and Confluence and because of the tight integration with those tools.

I'm using a combination of Ubuntu Server 16.04 VM (4GB RAM, 2-cores, 80GB HDD) + Virtualbox + MobaXterm (best SSH client on Windows). It works beautifully. I previously used Putty but it's a bit sparse regarding some options and gets confused sometimes when sending key codes via SSH session. Also I get the option of either using the Vbox shared folders or using the included SFTP client in MobaXterm that follows the current folder you're currently located in the terminal. It's a simple drag and drop. It even has a XServer included so I can run Linux desktop apps on Windows.

I got tired of running Linux directly on my desktop. Compiz crashes (worked in 14.04, not working in 14.10, started working again in 15.04, not working in 15.10...), can't keep my select sound output, terrible font rendering, awful HiDPI support, graphics drivers are a mess, and on and on...

Since I basically just need the non-graphical parts of Linux (Bash + Tmux + Vim) I'm very happy with this setup.

PS: Forgot to say that I have a very beefy machine (Skylake Core i7 4Ghz, 32GB DDR4, fastest consumer NVMe SSD from Samsung) but I've found that this setup works well on basically any machine.

Yes, I know. I had one of those. It uses a "special" 65W TDP desktop class CPU. The cooling solution is pretty crappy and noisy as hell.

Intel NUC uses low TDP mobile CPUs. The new Mini uses regular TDP mobile CPUs. The fastest NUC tops at 1.3GHz with Intel HD 5000 graphics. The new Mini tops at 3.0GHz with Intel Iris graphics.

If you are refering to compact desktop computers there aren't many (none?) that use regular TDP mobile CPUs, have Intel Iris graphics and are virtually silent. The only ones that are similar or have better specs are the Gigabyte Brix Pro line of compact desktops and most of them are noisy or extremely noisy and have bad cooling solutions. I know because I've owned two and ended up selling both after only a few weeks. The only one that show promise is this [1] and I still have doubts that it will be any good...

My only issue with the new Mini's is that you used to be able to buy one with a quad core CPU and now that option is gone. Other than that...

Companies are in the business of making money. They only provide perks because they believe that it makes you a happier employee and that way you will work better and/or more hours. Perks aren't just perks. They are an incentive that either complements or replaces higher pay/better conditions. Never believe that they are giving you free drinks, lunch, gym membership and laundry services because, well, why not?

As for price, i don't think it will even take that long. In 2 years it will cost something like 50 bucks. A USB3.0 128GB flash drive (260MB/s read, 240MB/s write) from SanDisk now costs about $100.
