Money, media, political footballs, lots and lots sure... but to actually solve the problem? Partisanship is an anti-pattern.

The amazing takeaway for me from this data driven story is that if you care to actually solve a problem in today's political climate the BEST thing you can do is to try and make it as non-partisan as possible. The WORST thing you can do if you're actually trying to solve a problem is to make it partisan or to inflame partisan divisions.

The key part of the quote is this, "I don't want any customer of ours to be worried about it"

They acquired two of the founders least responsible for the actual tech. They made a huge bet on OpenAI to produce the tech and that relationship is going down the drain. Watch the market today, the next week, the next month, the next six months and that will tell you what I say: this is a disaster for MS and they damn well know it.

This makes it seem like all altruistic non-profit endeavors have never worked which is obviously not the case.

Undoubtedly they have a perpet on what they released so far: chatgpt4. Not so for new innovations or tech.

Driving the narrative doesn't mean driving reality. It is clear that Sam and friends are great at manipulating the media. But this is a disaster for Microsoft and the CEO damn well knows it. It is also a personal disaster for Altman and probably not a great move for those who choose to join him.

Time will tell if the OpenAI non-profit vision of creating safe AGI for the benefit of humanity can be revitalized, but it really does look like all involved are basically acknowledging that at best they were fooling themselves into believing they were doing something on behalf of humanity. Egos and profit seeking took over and right now the ethos which they championed looks to be dying.

LOL This is more of the Altman based media blitz to drive this in his favor. This is nothing short of an unmitigated DISASTER for Microsoft and they well know it.

Ding ding ding. Threaten mass resignations if the deadline isn't met... deadline goes by... no mass resignations and the world hasn't fallen. Bluff called.

I'm pretty sure the work he put in to brand himself so that there are an army of fanbois bought into his own effort to hype himself up is probably a part of the reason for his firing.

"Salvage the organization"

They have one of the most valuable products in tech. They have a binding agreement with Microsoft and MS needs OpenAI more than the other way around. They have a dedicated set of researchers who have not pledged to leave and ultimatums have come and gone without mass resignations.

They fired their CEO. It happens. They aren't trying to "salvage" anything. Yes, the for-profit subsidiary investors are probably upset, but the major shareholder is the non-profit who... and this is important... is not beholden to the other for-profit investors!

I don't understand why you think what the board of the non-profit did was unethical. Your presupposition seems to be that the non-profit has a duty to make money - aka "keep the lights on" but it is a "non-profit" precisely because it does not have that duty. The duty of the board is to make sure the non-profit adheres to its charter. If it can't do that and keep the lights on at the same time, then so much worse for the lights.

That would effectively exit Microsoft from the LLM race and be an absolutely massive hit to Microsoft shareholders. Unlike the OpenAI non-profit board, the CEO of MS actually is beholden to his shareholders to make a profit.

In other words, MS has the losing hand here and CEO of MS is bluffing.

That's a good point, but any responsible investor would have looked at the charter and priced this in. What I find ironic is the number of people defending SamA and the like who are now tacitly admitting that his promulgation of AI risk fears was essentially bullshit and it was all about making the $$$$ and using AI risk to gain competitive advantage.

Hanging your hat on quibbles over division vs subsidiary eh? That's quite a strident rebuttal based on a quibble.

SamA is nowhere even close to relevant to the value that OpenAI presents. He's def. less than half a billion and likely much less than that. What makes OpenAI so transformative is the technology it produces and SamA is not an engineer that built that technology. If the people that made it were to all leave it would reduce the value of the company by a large amount, but the technology would remain and it is not easy to duplicate given the scarcity of GPU cycles, the training data now being very hard to acquire and lots of other well invested companies chasing with the likes of Google, Meta, Anthropic. That doesn't even begin to mention the open source models that are also competing.

SamA could try and start his own new copy of OpenAI and I have no doubt raise a lot of money, but that new company if it just tried to reproduce what OpenAI has already done would be not worth very much. By the time they reproduce OpenAI and its competitors will have already moved on to bigger and better things.

Enough with the hero worship for SamA and all the other salesmen.

Sam creating his own company for what purpose? Meta, Google, Elon's company, Anthropic, OpenAI... why would anyone believe that Sam and crew could stand up a new company tomorrow and have any kind of chance to compete in next six months with above?Even if Microsoft threw a ton of money at such a startup, good luck finding GPU time. Good luck sourcing the data. Good luck doing the RLHF. Could Sam and Greg do this? Sure! But what would that give them above and beyond the racers that are currently in pole position?

My bet is this is all ginned up by Microsoft and Altman to put media pressure on the board, but with very little actual valid basis. It is a bluff.

Microsoft is in a very very rough position here. They bet big on believing in Sam's wink wink cough "non-profit" cough wink wink only to run into some true believers.

Not here when the governance structure the way it is. The board has the last say. Now, there are obviously ways that investors can put pressure on the board and with literally billions at stake I can imagine that happening. Think serious espionage level drama.
