Mostly me exploring how to build a Treiber Stack (first in Go, then in C++) -> Figuring out ABA and Use-After-Free in the C++ implementation, and then touching a bit of Hazard Pointers, and ending with a benchmark comparison b/w a mutex and a lock-free version of the stack.
LLMs are a great tool at teaching and explaining. I don't use it to generate code, but it takes away the pain of searching and setting up dependencies, tools, etc. So I can focus only on the concepts and then do the testing.
It is not perfect, but I learned something that I did not know thanks to these techniques. And that too without reading dense and obscure books. I love it.
Why are we so eager to dismiss the very personal experiences of Andrew - someone who envisioned and developed Zig from the ground up? It is entirely within the realm of possibility that what he describes here did transpire. He had bad experiences with one of the more popular projects within the ecosystem - something that he hoped would become successful but the incentives were clearly misaligned.
When in doubt - look at the incentives. And the incentives here are fairly obvious. On one hand we have an open source project that is focused on quality and craftsmanship, and on the other hand we have the world's biggest AI company.
I am not anti-AI. But things like taste and quality matter. And I trust the creator of Zig more than the creator of Bun when it comes to said taste.

Clickhouse is not good for joins
This is less and less true as time goes on tbh. 25.9 introduced Join Reordering as well - https://clickhouse.com/blog/clickhouse-release-25-09

[0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFoMsLMZKikOkta / Lumos are the biggest offenders of this.
Co-incidentally, saw this video on Microsoft's VSCode Youtube channel yesterday - the Engineer in question was born without a right hand and shows her workflow with accessibility tools: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUPqKm5wVhw
Hope this helps your relative. Good luck.
They tried running minecraft, but I wonder if a similar (or better) cloning is possible for a mission critical workload - like a database consuming a huge amount of memory. Neon uses QEMU to achieve this for example: https://neon.tech/docs/reference/glossary#live-migration but is that the only way?
If people are still coming up with you for questions that the docs answer, then the docs are not discoverable. Nobody is going to sit through hours of docs to find that one small thing they are interested in knowing the answer to _right now_.
LLMs can solve this to some extend now tbh.
Is it recommended or not? I've heard anecdotally that going through the Consular services to obtain EB1C is not recommended - because you can get denied easily without any protections you might get from being in the US.
I think I qualify for EB-1C, but does one need to be present and already living in the US to apply for it, or can that happen from the current country of residence?
Or is the general path: L1 -> Move -> Apply for EB-1C once migrated.
If there are any of these hacker spaces that are friendly for English speakers (my German is only A2.1 sadly), I would love to join one of them :)
I'm definitely gonna attend. See you there!
Implementing https://interpreterbook.com/ and subsequently https://compilerbook.com/ in C++.
Saw your posts. It's reassuring to hear that the leadership team will continue to operate the company!
Good luck with everything, Paras. Have fun running the AI Lab :)
Question - What is typically the future of companies that are acquired by Private Equity firms?
As a former employee of VWO who worked there for ~3 years, I'm curious about the future of the company.
Shouldn't be an issue.
ClickHouse | Senior Software Engineer - Data / Machine Learning / Statistics | Remote (US / EU)
ClickHouse is a popular, Open-Source OLAP Database. We are ClickHouse Inc, the company behind the database aiming to build the best in class real time data warehouse.
I am hiring for a Senior Software Engineer to work on our AutoScaling recommendation pipeline, used to do vertical and horizontal scaling database clusters for ClickHouse Cloud.
We are looking for people who have production experience in building data products - think time-series forecasting, anomaly detection using heuristics, stats or ML models. The ability to dig deep into metrics quality, statistics explainable algorithms for Auto-Scaling are crucial. Things like simulations, back-testing etc are useful to know.
If you happen to be have Data Engineering or Data Infrastructure experience as well, that's cherry on top.
You'll be working across the stack - the Infrastructure, Kubernetes Operators and innards, Data Pipelines, but most critically, the Recommendation Pipeline. If you're into Databases, we also work closely with the Core database team to support the Auto-Scaling needs.
Stack: Go for the Cloud Systems, Python for the Recommendation Services.

What's wrong with trying to get rich? Please explain.
Amsterdam cultivated a reputation for its drug tourism. Why was that ever allowed to happen? It seems like you're angry about all the tourism - a problem a lot of other cities would love to have.
The sad answer is that everyone _left_ Amsterdam by choice - and allowed these tourism centric industries to grow. The money that it brought in was too good and eventually lead to the so called decline you seem to be complaining about.
As for property price rise - people have the same complaint against tech workers. So I guess I can no longer be a tourist and I can't work in tech because someone somewhere is definitely going to be angry that I make more money and the world isn't fair.
Why is this company always on HN frontpage - ironically for their bad services? Normally, poor service from a provider isn't grounds for such attention - but seems like Fly.io has not done anything great.
They still continue to get love from the developer community who "wants them to succeed". I'm puzzled as to why? Because of some blog posts?
