technology workers enjoy an unprecedented amount of freedom in where they choose to work - the causes or injustices that your employer endorses or perpetuates become your own. If you didn't agree with them, you'd work somewhere else.

Or if you continue to work for an employer that believes in or perpetuates hurting people or enables others to hurt people, at least admit to yourself that the delta in compensation is all that's required for you to compromise what ethics you thought you had.

Facebook Won't Honor Do-Not-Track Browser Setting

I wonder if facebook employees really think they paper over the harm they do each day by renaming their company.

if you call it something else does it still hurt people?

45,000 fb employees choose every day to work for him. The responsibility for what fb is is just as much theirs.

If they didn’t agree with fb’s actions they’d leave.

100% true.

If a software engineer writes software that hurts people, they believe in hurting people and believe people should be hurt.

If they didn’t, they wouldn’t write software that hurts people.

The impressive amount of freedom tech workers have to choose what they work on means the ethical and moral issues with their production should fall on each person’s shoulders, but it doesn’t.

FB is what it is because 45,000 employees work hard daily to make it that way.

if they weren't satisfied with how it works or what it does, they'd fix it or they'd leave. every day they continue to work there without changing direction, they vote with their time that FB is doing what it ought to be doing.

all of the responsibility for FB's effects on the world belongs to them.

Blast from the past!

My good friend Daniel Horn started developing this right around when I met him in high school.

The term “meatspace” has always bothered me.

It’s “real life.” The internet is the illusion.

I’m at a loss to understand why your statement means this person, or anyone who increases the suffering of others in the pursuit of their own personal wealth, shouldn’t feel bad about doing so.

you're making the incorrect assumption that both sides of the discourse have valid positions.

1. what is a non-racist person supposed to say to a racist person to change their views?

2. why is it the non-racist person's responsibility to talk to the racist person? in the words of office space, "why should I change? he's the one who sucks."

I have a side project that didn't make money, then did, and now effectively does not.

I write novels: I've published 10 so far. I didn't make any money for a while, but all in all I've sold about 80,000 copies. I haven't published anything new since 2018 and my sales have since dried up completely.

Fiction is a product market fit game first: if you don't write what people want to read, they won't read it. After that, it is a quantity game. New books come out every day, if you don't keep releasing more stories, people will forget you.

getting back to writing is one of my 2021 goals.

I'm curious how much money Facebook has made over the years taking money to spread anti-vax ideas, and whether they have any plans to try and make up for it.

How many people, primarily children, have died as a result?

Why is anti-vaccination suddenly something Facebook has decided to do the right thing about, after over a decade of doing the wrong thing?

Facebook employees: how do you feel about your work being used to advocate against vaccines till today?

To reiterate: zero credit for doing the right thing after all this time profiting off doing the wrong thing.

Zero credit for doing the right thing after years of profiting off doing the wrong thing.

questions for Facebook employees: 1. how much revenue did Facebook make off holocaust denying content/users, and what're your plans to donate at least that much, or otherwise fix the damage you've done?

2. how do you feel about your day job's role from whenever you started at Facebook till October 12, 2020 in promoting and proliferating holocaust denial and other morally bankrupt positions? do you feel you have any responsibility for the bad things your work is used for?

I put off reading The Three Body Problem because I wanted to make sure I was good and ready to be amazed.

I've read Cixin Liu's short stories and thoroughly enjoyed them. He comes up with some amazing ideas. I even really liked the movie based on Wandering Earth, despite how it converted the story to more action.

I barely made it through 3BP and I don't have much excitement for the sequels. The story just did not grip me at all.

the trouble with that solution is that players are aware of the direction of what they'll get and can make action decisions appropriately. if I know one deck is the bad one, I'll avoid actions that result in draws to that deck, unless impossible to avoid.

I think Ignacy wanted there to be ambiguity there.
