Yes, immich is incredible! I have my entire family's photos (not all technical users mind you) synced and backed up thanks to immich server and its phone app. The web UI is easy, fast and they've even started adding basic editing capabilities recently.
I see a decent amount of skepticism and negativity in this thread, but I'm glad to see that someone is funding projects like this.
Even the previous-gen Pis would easily throttle under load without a heat sink (although usually installing a decent heat sink was enough to resolve the problem, assuming decent airflow). As the article notes, the heat was mainly from the SoC in the past. The Pi 4 is on a whole different level indeed.
I imagine the logic here is the same as with many other Pi accessories: if you need it, you'll buy it or get it as part of a bundle. In some cases throttling is not a huge issue. But we're a far cry from the simple plug-and-play Pis of the past... Another issue is power -- you can't simply run the newer Pis reliably off any old cell phone charger you have laying around.
Exactly. It will be interesting to see how something like this sells.
I have a feeling that it will fill a niche, but not be a hugely popular option with most MBP users. Folks can whine about the lack of ports, but in a few years USB-C devices will be quite common and reliable.
For something like ethernet, I'd honestly rather "haul" a small dongle around.
Awesome! This is exactly what I've been hoping for. The state of terminal emulators on macOS is particularly bad, at least when it comes to speed. Both the built-in term and iTerm have a lot of features, but really start to lag on big screens with a lot of text. I used to run urvxt under XQuartz for this reason, but there's scaling problems with retina screens these days.
Nice work. Hopefully this can fill a particular void for folks that want no-frills fast terminal emulation.
I believe you are correct, the base model with touchbar has a i5-6267U.
Just curious: how many folks can accurately touch-type the Fn-keys? Personally they're too far away from the home row for me to hit accurately, but maybe that's because I use too many different keyboards and they're all slightly different with spacing. The esc key is easy with it being located in the corner, though.
So in my case, I would already look down to hit an F-key, and I imagine functionality such as "compile" would now be represented by a touch button. So no problem there. And point #2 is just ridiculous -- today's MacBook CPUs and Memory are faster and consume less power than they did 6 years ago.
I run several Java applications on a FreeBSD server without problems. Is there a particular subset of Java features that don't work other than on Linux? I also haven't had any issues with Java on macOS.
