Not universally true, I use banking apps on my Pixel running the latest GrapheneOS. There is literally nothing I cannot do on my phone. I think it's possible that no US banks have apps that can be used as it seems a universal experience among Americans.

Yea it's probably to have a catchy name and get some attention. Although it's technically accurate to call it 4D since it includes time, I think 3D video recording would probably get the point across to more people in a less sensationalist way.

What are you talking about? How does this relate to anything in the discussion? Besides, you were denigrating the intelligence of the average person, as though that's the reason they don't acquire all the skills necessary to have digital privacy.

Ironically, that's a stupid assumption to have. You might be in your own bubble, but I know many very intelligent people who do not have the time or interest in gaining digital privacy. It's not as easy or without compromise as you seem to think.

Fair enough, but on the flipside I wanted to point out that for at least some of us it's possible to use GrapheneOS with no compromises to the experience. Usually you only hear about those telling you categorically that you "can't" use banking, government and other sensitive apps when that's not true. Anyone on the fence should try it out themselves.

I think it's assumed that it's within reason and in situations where the ultimatum has the purpose of pushing you into a situation you would prefer not to be in. The WoW example is an example of dysfunctional behavior and the HR example is a routine process and not unexpected from the recipient nor is the cost of filling it in extreme. Your examples don't apply and it should be obvious why.

Do you think it's possible to pay a new group of people and have them care as much as the people who met voluntarily out of sheer interest and dedication to their community? I doubt it.

Edit: not that I'm against paying mods, I support that. But replacing enthusiast mods with paid mods, I doubt that'll be adequate.

NL is meant as Netherlands here and the context is that since you can't talk about growing cannabis in the open, people talk about their "vegetable" gardens or "herbs" instead. The comment you're responding to is implying that the grow tent is used to grow cannabis but he's covering it up by saying it's a vegetable garden.

But doesn't using one battery through another effectively mean that you're using both batteries in terms of wear and tear? If the phone drains the internal battery and the magsafe battery is charging the internal battery, to me that sounds like both batteries are in use experiencing normal wear. If that's not how it works, I'd be curious to hear how it does work.

I use GrapheneOS on a Pixel 7 Pro daily and I can use banking, transport, and government apps just fine. There's only been one time I had to look up how to get an app working and that was trivial. I get notifications and can use the Google services I choose with permissions I pick. I can even use all the hardware features such as Google's AI image editing and camera features. Even installing GrapheneOS is done through a browser and takes just a few steps. If you are just slightly technically inclined I see no reason you can't use GrapheneOS, I haven't personally had to compromise in any way while I have gained complete control of my device.

Even if using GrapheneOS came with downsides, the amount of power you gain over your device would have been worth it. If you have a Pixel device you owe it to yourself to spend a few minutes finding out if you want to try GrapheneOS.

YouTube videos have a much easier time reaching more people. Not only is video easier to consume than sitting down and reading for a lot of people, but YouTube also has a discovery system making your content easier to discover. I also believe it is probably easier to keep a lot of people watching a 10-20+ minute video rather than having them spend that amount of time reading too. The HN crowd might not fall into any of these categories though.

If the content is also just a stream of thoughts, it can be easier for some people to just talk to a camera, edit it down, and put it up as a video. For some people that is easier than having to think about wording, grammar, formatting, etc.

Hosting on YouTube is also free as opposed to hosting your own written website, but of course free hosting for written content exists too.
