I think Google Now will do the last one for you already (location based reminders). I use it for reminding myself about things when I get to work or home. Just say "Okay google remind me to <thing>" and then there's a location option for when.

I don't own a watch, but I think they probably implement this feature.

I heard during AI Class (6.034 w/Patrick Winston) that the same experiment was repeated with adults but they had to say some pre-determined words the whole time, and they regressed back to the level of pre-6 year olds.

Speech uses the same part of the brain as thought apparently, so making someone say words prevents them from thinking during that time.

I'm a current undergrad at MIT and I still see it (and use Emacs myself). Vim and Sublime are more popular though. Vim and Sublime are probably around equal, followed by Emacs.

The areas that have been searched are very close to where they lost contact though. I would have thought they'd be looking farther away with this information.

Unity isn't exactly "open," it's actually closed source which can be a big pain if something goes wrong. Compared to traditional game development where usually you have access to all the source it is a big pain (for me at least).

Many of these are the sites sending users generated passwords which doesn't necessarily indicate that the passwords are stored in the database as plain text. It's reasonable that the passwords are generated, the email is sent with the password, then the password is hashed and stored in the database, and the plain text version deleted.

I still see a problem with his testing in that he might be connecting to a server in a different area which is less congested when he connects through his school's VPN.

A proper conclusive test would ensure connection to the same Netflix IP somehow over a VPN as his home connection.

They already paid back some people at 20%, so it's impossible for them to pay you back now. They are in 'debt,' even if they just gave coins back at 1:1 they can't repay.

I've had a lot of time with the development version of the Oculus Rift, and there's more things than just that which will cause headaches/motion sickness. Many things where the eyes and other sensors disagree will cause headaches.

In game side to side motion, rapid changes in heights, UI that is not fixed in world space, things that are too bright, taking camera control away from the player (slow horizontal rotation seems to be okay, vertical rotations cause immediate headaches in my testing), FPS lower than 60, etc. The FPS one is particularly interesting I was mirroring on a monitor, and I couldn't tell that the FPS was low(it was running at around 35fps), but in the Rift is was super obvious something was wrong.

I attended a talk for developers given by the founder recently, and he mentioned that stairs also are troublesome, and ramps work better right now. Something to do with how the brain has been trained to know the sensation of climbing stairs.

Their marketing division might be shady, but they also make very solid devices. I've had my s3 for awhile and haven't felt the need to upgrade at all since it still performs super well.

As an Android developer I really appreciate what Samsung did in raising the bar for Android devices, and really bringing them to the mass market. High quality Android devices have been around for awhile, but it was far more common to see most people walking around with the low-mid tier Android phones. Samsung made it "cool" to own an S3, and now you can release and know that many of your users will actually own a solid Android device.

No it doesn't, a lot of that info is actually in my Hacker News profile, you can just click on my username. If that did scare me, then I shouldn't have that info up there, right? Because people will have access to it someway or another if you have it online like that. That's my whole point. Just trusting no one will ever find your info is not good practice if you're actually concerned about it, regardless of what laws are in place.

I'll also note that it doesn't take just 1 person to go corrupt, it also takes laws to change to let them act on that info and a court system that sides with them.

Stallman isn't completely disconnected, I see an email from him probably every other day. He's very aware of what's happening in the world. He still has email and he can get the news through various websites as long as they don't require non-free software.

I have trust that they are indeed public servants, apparently a lot more than people here. I don't see them going after the every day person with the data they have. For that to happen a lot more bad laws would have to be passed.

I don't know, I still don't mind if the NSA has access to my data if they're not allowed to share it.

I accept that things that I share on the cloud/with big tech companies are probably accessible by someone. I don't have any guarantee that the top people at Google/Yahoo aren't looking through my stuff--they certainly have the ability to do so.

As long as you're storing your data in a service like this, someone will have access, probably multiple people. This new PRISM stuff just tells me that a few more people have access, it doesn't really change much for me.

If you are concerned about this type of privacy I'd suggest living like Stallman then. It's not as if you don't have methods to keeping your data private.

I just went to the homepage on my Android device and tried with both default browser and chrome.

It's slow and buggy in my experience. I work on a fairly large Android project and over time it just keeps getting slower and slower. Doing things like closing/opening files of any size can take > 5 seconds even with a good SDD and processor, and this time increases as you use it until you restart eclipse. Also it crashes more often than any other IDE I've used and lately has refused to use emacs keybindings for me.

Lately I've switched using emacs w/ JDEE to edit code and Eclipse mostly just for debugging and the Android XML layout tools, which feels much better. I'm really interested in this new IDE from google, it'd be better if I could do all my editing/debugging in one program.

Still in school, but when I visited Yahoo! Headquarters for a recruitment event everyone seemed to be in good morale. Of course it was for recruitment so they would be showing the best, but people there seemed happy and I saw a fairly wide range of offices. I saw changes to the food service in making it free and higher quality (which I can attest was excellent), and they were redesigning the offices while I was there, removing the cubicles and making a more open layout that you see at a lot of newer tech companies.

Everyone I talked to legitimately thought that Marissa is bringing some much needed change to the company as far as I could tell, and I spoke to mostly software engineers, not PR people. Obviously opinions probably vary across the company and it's fairly large though.

EyeNetra, an MIT Media lab spin off, is looking for a full time lead Android developer as well as INTERNs. Located in Sommerville, MA.

It's a lot of interesting work and we're working on a product that could help a lot of people! The goal is to bring affordable eye care to people all around the world who need glasses but don't have access right now because the current testing tools are expensive and require significant training.

There was no difference in the calculations at 100 orbs, we just let v/c get much closer to one. The effects were actually there before 100 orbs you probably didn't notice much because of the colors! Internally the colors and Lorenz and time invariance calculations effect different things, the 100 orb stage just removes the operations done in the fragment shader--the vertex sharer remains unaffected.

Our initial plans involved mushrooms that grew due to the time dilation. They were nice because they could grow straight up so we had easy time calculating past positions. We only later realized the connection that you could make.

The Lorentz transformations are not as apparent as the visual effects, they're not canceled out though. You can actually see them, try speeding up and slowing down when you have >50 orbs. You'll see a warped view and such :)

It was considered but there are some equations that still need to be worked out. We'd need to store the history of each player but I believe we decided it could be done.

The goal we were given at the start of the summer was just to create a tech demo, the team tried to make a game out of it as much as possible though. The original plan was to release a tech demo at the end of the summer and then make a game with it after, the after part hasn't started yet though, and I'm not sure if it will.

It had to be written in C# in the Unity Engine so it's kinda slow. The other issue was that I had no access to the culling system besides just turning it off so every object in the scene is rendered every frame.

I think the limitation would be on the GPU side, or at least it was on the system I was testing on.

It's instantaneous. There's no answer in physics for what should happen when you change the speed of light because that simply just can't happen. Therefore we didn't bother doing something like prorogation at the speed of light.

We don't do gravity calculations, along with a few other things because we didn't have time and they make the other effects hard to see.

In the future I would have liked to continue with the project and implement some of this though.

Most of my work was on implementing the actual calculations for relativistic effects.

It was coded in Unity Game engine in C# mostly. The hard calculations are actually all calculated in a shader written in Cg (mostly just C) so they're on the graphics card.
