Isn't biggest attack surface in drivers? I expect distros to split less popular kernel modules into many separate opt-in packages at cost of default hardware support, and kernel developers to purge everything without active development team. The good old "lets leave it in tree, someone might find it useful" was nice idea but that is the part that is definitely not sustainable.

You are wrong. Just idea of having to use to remotes is unacceptable level of friction to most people. We should not hail separate device as excuse to allow this shitty behaviour by TV manufacturers. I guess the lawmakers won't move a finger and we have wait for consumer network equipment manufacturers[1] to advertise build in pi-hole and ACR/TV ads blocking on firewall level.

I think the issue is that for now people are actually amused, not shocked. At least that was the reaction to news about agent accessing root files by abusing docker group membership. The general sentiment is still "cool trick bro" not "some agent is going to do something we all are going to regret, and it is going to happen soon"

I found GoPros to cook SD cards from time to time. It makes me wonder if normal sized SD are still manufactured and are they more resistant. For years in stores I only saw miro SD with adapter to full size.
For few years the solution was to buy any TV you like, not connect it to internet and use some cheap streaming box. Nowadays even Roku added ads to its devices, so the question became: which streaming services are easy to whitelist on router, cause my consumer devices are too unsafe to allow them internet access.

Unlikely. If we are able to pull too much heat from crust it will make those geothermal plants inoperable (due to too low temperature), in that localized spot, long before we are able to impact wider area or deeper layers.
What? For the same reason we don't build hydro plants everywhere, they depend on local conditions and all best spots are already used. Iceland can access geothermal power in entire country so they did.

Is that really enough? AFAIK many PC games with SecuROM won't ever work without crack, as that entire DRM is incompatible with modern OSes.

There is no reason for there not to be a price fixing. But the OpenAI's announcement from 2025-10-01 about buying 40% of supply, removes any need for collusion. Speaking of Steam and controllers - is anyone else annoyed by piss poor compatibility of PC games with Steam onscreen keyboard. I can count on one hand games with seamless integration, where it popups after moving to input field. The manual Steam/XBox + "X" shortcut always shows the keyboard, but games like to ignore submitted value. My favorite example is Dark Souls character creation screen, it is the only place in the entire game you can and need to enter text, and it is faster to walk the 50ft and back, than to get it working.
