LLMs improve development speed such that enshittification can be in progress well before the IPO.

This is hyperbolic. Users that started with the older interface often prefer that. Humans do not like change. This is a trap that many software developers offering prereleases also fall into. The safety claim has as much to do with maintaining only one stack at a time. Keeping an older interface around extends vulnerabilities and generates ongoing maintenance costs. Referring to old Reddit as plain, safe HTML is not an accurate characterization.

Really sad that the latest tech debacle gets the Silicon Valley label while so much interesting and constructive work plods along in relative dark.

Similar to the trajectory of nuclear power which lost public approval for reasons that are not entirely rational.

Right now we don't have AI. We have LLMs. LLMs compose responses and have now ability to say they don't know any answer or are unsure. This combines with the chipper manner of their communication to make for a dangerous mix.

LLMs are strongly mean reverting in their decision making, so heavy users are likely to be readily identified by their unadventurous conformism much as generated media is identified now.

They should hire some juniors to patch together analysis with local LLMs and do that on an as needed basis to avoid the creepiness. Networks of cameras remain a highly powerful way of holding evildoers accountable.

That seems like saying weightlifting is pointless because we have robots for lifting and moving things around. But lifting weights can improve health and lifespan. It may also be that thinking in another language is different from merely translating because of the idioms and cultural norms and references involved.

Seems like having a big and clunky external power supply enables a smaller profile for the rest of the unit while making installation a bit more complex. How exactly is this thing going to be installed for use? Wouldn't it be easier to just have a bigger box with more shielding and heat dissipation?

High speed rail in China is a disaster. Basic safety failings have led to repeated crashes and deaths. Confiscation of property on a massive scale has damaged government credibility. Trillions of dollars worth of investment is not paying off while depreciation does it's work. Prices have been cranked up, large numbers of workers have been fired, and the whole system is still deep in the red. The only solid good coming from Chinese high speed rail is the demonstration of how much damage out of control dictators can do to the bottom line.

Depending on the trade that may require reeducation, apprenticeship, and so on. Riding through years of that will be difficult for many if they are used to raising a family with full time pay or have only so many years before needing to face retirement.

One of the biggest problems with LLMs has turned out to be the cost of actually running them and this strategy functions as a usage multiplier.

The data shows that listed job openings are increasing, but the rate of hiring is decreasing. This appears to be a unique occurrence and appears to substantiate the observations in the post.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons Elon became so important at Tesla. The other key players died in a freakish plane crash, apparently hitting transmission lines at low altitude which is not something parachutes would likely have helped with.

Bodycams designed to do exactly this cost $50-100. This is clearly an issue, but directly linking it to smart glasses isn't going work.

What is most troubling for me is seeing kids just switch off when LLMs are available. Doing homework they will have zero interpretation or contemplation, just enter the question as a prompt and record the result. LLMs appear to have the ability to interfere with the most basic aspects of attention and executive function.

It seems this is still extremely early in the process. There is an apparent finding that was shared. Evidence which would be the basis for a paper is "being reviewed by linguistics experts at Rutgers and Cambridge". So they are trying to do the right thing by talking about what they believe they have done but holding off publication and serious claims until later. The general idea that written forms can be categorized by systems built with Claude could be applied to other as yet undecipherable languages could be used by other interested investigators just with what is discussed here.

This is basic security. Cameras around entrances, exits, and common areas have become critical for safety and preventing mail theft.
