Yea, I have re-read things for goals as well. I also re-read things for the mental approach it may instill for a period of time while and after reading it, to enjoy it (like you said), or to see how the perspective fits to my new mental models a few years later. Three fiction books I constantly go back to at different times are Brave New World, The Alchemist, and Prey.

I'm curious what books others go back to over time.

I would love to see dang weigh in here just out of curiosity AND see how many people or if people are using the vouch mechanism if they can. Because this post doesn't have an insignificant upvote count and has actual conversation happening in the comments.

100% serious statement here, who are you looking at on Bluesky or how? The very study you cited states in their initial summary of findings that "The study provides the first evidence to support a widely held belief: that racially mixed juries do not discriminate against defendants based on the defendant’s ethnic background. It makes sense people are going to LLMs for this but part of the problem is that a therapist isn't just someone for you to talk to. A huge part of their job is the psychoeducation, support and connection to a human, and the responsibility of the relationship. A good therapist isn't someone who will just sit with you through an anxiety attack, they work to build up your skills to minimize the frequency and improve your individual approach to handling it.

I'm not really sure if this is what you are getting at but it is using physical properties associated with QM to create the random numbers. Not just a mathematical model.

Yea, I agree. I similarly used it when I was moving I would take 360 photos of my old rooms or for seasonal decorations to see how the room changes over time. It looks like there are some decent 3rd party ones on the market but we'll see. It was a nice partner to cardboard.

This Quanta piece is from May and is talking about work that came out in October 2022 so if Aaronson was going to write a piece he probably already did (maybe, obviously my assumptions could be completely wrong).

But the abstract of the pre-print (https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.10255) covers some of what you are asking:

"Despite the well developed mathematical description of non-Abelian anyons and numerous theoretical proposals, the experimental observation of their exchange statistics has remained elusive for decades. Controllable many-body quantum states generated on quantum processors offer another path for exploring these fundamental phenomena. While efforts on conventional solid-state platforms typically involve Hamiltonian dynamics of quasi-particles, superconducting quantum processors allow for directly manipulating the many-body wavefunction via unitary gates."

They created a collection of quasi-particles that has different statistical properties that we don't see in 3D (the Non-abelian anyon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anyon). So simulated or created becomes a tricky word here, the quantum processor is putting these qubits into a state that acts as a quasi-particle so they can study it directly. So no a classical computer would not be able to do this in the same way it would have to use classical bits to simulate the quasi-particle.

That is something that I have struggled to convey. Working in a scientific field looks a lot different than just reading things from that scientific community. Sub-fields and up real small and you know what is going on, what the problems are, and who are what kind of players in your field.

I get your point but I wouldn't call it an academic paper disclaimer, it is giving you the scope/breadth of their research. That is why I took the whole paragraph, they are saying they found a bias in hiring. That is a specific slice of "Academic Science," that the HigherEd article is calling out but only a slice. That is why the

part is important, it specifically is saying there has been a lot of work showing systemic barriers but they are not researching that part. This isn't a critique of their research but of the summary articles headline and what some people seem to be taking away from that headline. Even in the HigherEd piece it says there are concerns and this research is to help identify where there has been progress and where we need to focus.

Man that is not a great headline from Inside Higher Ed. In the discussion section the authors explicitly layout that this is a specific slice they are looking at not all of Academic Science.

"Before we summarize our findings below, we reiterate a caveat noted throughout this article: The failure to support specific claims of bias does not deny the possibility that broader, systemic barriers against women in the academy exist and/or that significant bias existed before 2000. We did not examine systemic claims of bias, such as the tenure schedule that imposes inflexible time-career paths or structural societal norms that burden women with greater responsibilities outside of their academic jobs or that penalize women for negotiating forcefully for wage increases or seeking outside offers. Other scholars have identified a myriad of such systemic barriers. But when it comes to specific claims about biased grant reviewers, search committee members, journal editors, and letter writers, the claims of antifemale bias were not supported, and in one case (tenure-track hiring), the data actually supported the opposite conclusion—that of pro-female hiring bias. This pro-female hiring advantage has continued after the closing of our inclusionary period, 2020 (Henningsen et al, 2021; Solga et al., 2023)."

This write up of it [0] tries to address that a little but I agree that all the scrutiny is deserved and should continue.
