iOS apps at google are developed via ciderv that had a connection to your local mac, and it's amazing. All code editing is "online" and builds are cached, but simulator runs on your local machine. I'm convinced the apple dev env at google is like 100x better than apple's

I feel like core dev team learned a lot about actually enabling a web based ide for line 100k engineers across the globe for a gazillion line mono repo. ciderv is really just a skin for the amazing infra. Which is also why I think there was less resistance to the change

FaceID, AirPods, Apple Silicon, Vision Pro (though it was flop was a good try). Overall, I would actually place Tim above Steve in terms of business, although maybe not from a Human Computer Interaction design novelty perspective

I still fondly remember playing cyberpunk 2077 on release date with no download time. What the future could have been . Probably would have become economically infeasible regardless with GPU prices due to AI though

Gemini 3.1 Pro 5 months ago

It's so weird. I actually prefer the web version for generic questions like "how would I do X in git" or something, and it'll answer it well. Gemini CLI will immediately try to run git log on the entire graph, grep every single file in the repo, like just answer the question. I actually put in gemini.md to just answer first without running other commands unless explicitly requested and it's been a lot better

But the thing is your local gov & economic policies (tax codes, bonds, projects, trade) matter to your actual daily life and retirement far more than left v right. They just play that game to keep you enraged and baited. And people do actually care about gas, groceries, and inflation; they just don't vote in their own objective interest

Agreed on both of these. Proton search is so dogshit.

Re: the custom domain catch all reply, this is a bit annoying but there js a workaround. I made a SendGrid account which allows me like 100 sends per month, and I can reply in Thunderbird via SendGrid as any email account. Annoying to boot up Thunderbird, and I haven't found a way to do this on my iPhone, but I don't need ti reply from a throwaway frequently so it's sufficient for now.

A definition of AGI 9 months ago

Yup, I feel like the biggest limitation with current AI is that they don't have desire (nor actual agency to act upon it). They don't have to worry about hunger, death, feelings, and so they don't really have desires to further explore space, or make life more efficient because they're on limited time like humans. Their improvement isn't coming inside out like humans, it's just external driven (someone pressing a training epoch). This is why I don't think LLMs will reach AGI, if AGI somehow ties back to "human-ness." And maybe that's a good thing for Skynet reasons, but anyways

I come from mobile, and was surprised how nice svelte is. Felt so much more familiar patterns than react

You're really trying to convince me people care about kids but we've been having school shooting for 30 years? And that the length or frequency of events makes them okay, or not worth mentioning? So 30 years of more frequent assassinations should be make similar types of events okay? To use "you're probably one of those" and "argue in good faith" in the same comment is pretty wild work.

It was only 2 years ago we were still taking about GPTs making up completely nonsense, and now hallucinations are almost gone from the discussions. I assume it will get even better, but I also think there is an inherent plateau. Just like how machines solved mass manufacturing work, but we still have factory workers and overseers. Also, "manually" hand crafted pieces like fashion and watches continue to be the most expensive luxury goods. So I don't believe good design architects and consulting will ever be fully replaced.
