I can't help but feel like someone with Karpathy's experience and financial resources would start their own company if they had real creativity and vision.

Bell Labs was primarily funded by AT&T, a private company. Like I said, an environment with low taxes and real freedom is the source of prosperity, creativity, and innovation.

All the key people in CS, EE, and Physics needed to invent transistors where in America at the time.

Why? Mostly because America has true individual freedom and low taxes, unlike Europe.

The introduction of self-driving technology at scale will inevitably result in a few accidents no matter how many sensors are used. It's the same with every new technology deployed in high-risk situations, including motor vehicles themselves. Even malfunctioning airbags have caused fatalities. The important thing is to identify the issue early so the company can address it before more people get hurt, which the ODI in this case is thankfully doing.

I totally get it Yann LeCun and FAIR want to focus on next gen research, but they seem almost proud of their distance from product development at Meta. Isn't that a convenient way to avoid accountability? Meta has published a ton of great work, but appears to be losing economically in AI. It's understandable that the executive team wants change.

This paper seems based on the premise that inequality is bad, which is completely false. Inequality is absolutely necessary so that resources go to where they are used most effectively. This maximizes overall wealth/value creation, which is better for everyone, even if it is unequally shared. USA has highest median income in the world by a large margin for this very reason.

Bullshit. All the big VC firms in the USA are funded by private investors (rich people). They fund risky tech startups because big, fast gains are possible and the marginal capital gains tax rate is 20%. In the UK it's 39%! But 24% for residential property, hence the focus on real-estate that you mention.

Tax less, and prosperity follows!

Wow it’s so refreshing to know that other people can see this.

There is simply not enough private capital investment in Europe. The public money is inevitably passed through academic hands or other public sector bureaucrats. And it is simply an ineffective way to allocate capital. The money should be returned to private hands where it belongs and those individuals should be the ones to decide how to invest their own capital.

Why do so few Europeans get this? It’s like they just can’t stand the idea of a wealthy person investing their own money.

Are we supposed to feel sorry for him? Poor people have the same existential thoughts too. At least he has the freedom to choose what he wants to do and not to be beholden to anyone, which is the whole damn point of being rich. No one ever claimed wealth solves all of life’s problems. Anyway, his lack of grounding is most likely from lack of a family.
