I recently bought a Mac mini M4 16 GB - mostly to run Immich. I assumed I needed a Linux box. After a lot of researched I was quite surprised that the mac was the cheapest option. So not always an Apple tax.

In the company I’m at this is beginning to happen. PM’s want to “prototype” new features and expect the engineers to finish up the work. With the expectation that it ‘just needs some polishing’. What would be your recommendation on how to handle this constructively? Flat out rejecting LLM as a prototyping tool is not an option.

I am working on a time tracking app. I use it to keep track of time spent vs my estimates, and also just to check my actual working hours. It's fully local—everything is stored in localStorage — but I do have plans for some optional syncing so it can be used on multiple devices.

The author surely knows about competing protocols but prefers at. It would be just as easy to argue the author is biased if a comparison was made. Maybe more informative though.

Thanks for the feedback - means a lot. I had enabled high level usage tracking on Vercel. I was tracking page views to see if I got any users. I have switched to using Plausible [0], a privacy focused analytics tool, and added an opt out option on first load.

I am working on a time tracking app for tasks. I built it because I want to gain a better understanding of how I spend my working days. It's meant to be very simple. Everything is stored locally and requires no login. I don't currently plan to sync it with any backend. This isn't something that can be used to track employees — it's just for personal use.

I think a simple explanation could be that it is slightly harder (mentally) to move than copy a file. Windows move: ctrl + x Mac: cmd + option + v In every other program, cut/paste is the same as windows. That’s confusing - at least as a former Windows user. That said, I had many duplicate files on Windows too.

StencilJS does this too. It also has a wrapper to create React components. I really recommend it

Will inefficient JavaScript increase power consumption? Will videos and images? I think so. By all means plant some trees instead, but most of us don’t. We code. And when we do, if we consider efficiency a bit then we actually might move the needle, however slightly. It all helps.

So the argument here seems to be: ‘I want to ditch google because of privacy concerns but, I will not compromise on usability’. Bad UI should not be that hard but google has many popular feature because they can analyse user data.

I hear the same argument with search and maps. Yes, DDG and Apple maps is not quite as good as Google’s. But, if you want privacy you will have to sacrifice something. Google has so many resources to put into their core product. Off course they will be better. And they use user data for some features which privacy focused companies just can’t provide. You just can’t have it all.

We should not ignore the value of signalling. There is little impact you can have as an individual. Reducing food waste or recycling have almost no direct impact but, it shows that you care and people respond. Politicians, and companies respond. It’s almost like voting.

The ‘Google is an advertising company’ is said often on HN. I agree to some extent but, doesn’t that imply that every newspaper company is also just an advertising company? Google solves a real problem and this works well, for them, with an advertising based revenue model. Do they compromise their search to that end? Probably. Do newspapers? Hopefully not, but maybe. To me, that doesn’t make them advertising companies. Apologies if this is pedantic.

While I agree layoffs don’t equate recession they are often a precursor. Of course hirings should be considered too. Layoffs > hirings is almost always a bad sign for the economy.
