China has done this with absolutely everything, starting with “customs inspections” of ships engineering sections by “inspectors” drawing diagrams of what they see. Bit late to be worrying about it now. This only matters now because China is now near parity in tech and vastly superior in production ability. Meanwhile we run out of bullets in a five month war with Iran.

The problem is that the questions end with “Is it true?” instead of following up with “Why is it true?”

though (more on this later) and we ended up with about 1,200 uses of unsafe (out of our 300K lines of Rust code

Vs

Rust code has a different source of memory-safety gaps: the unsafe sections that nearly every Rust program has somewhere in its dependencies. Unsafe Rust has all the memory unsafety risk of ReleaseFast Zig code, but none of the runtime checks to catch issues during development

Well if ReleaseFast would work for you then just write that in rust. The unsafe keyword can be used to write a shitshow, or it can be used to write small pieces of functionality, such as ArcUnion, that are safe to use. I don’t agree that every application has to have any unsafe code. If you find yourself needing it, then you go build the abstraction you need in another crate, miri the fuck out of that, and then just consume it in your application.

If you’re fine with the shitshow, then use zig, because that’ll improve rusts stats.

If you think you’re in the magical “I know what I’m doing and I need the extra performance” then you probably don’t know what you’re doing. You’re young. Knock yourself out. I’ve written assembly language hackery for video games you wouldn’t believe. Would I use any of that for a language others are going to use? You’re not that smart. And if you are, someone else on your project isn’t. Just a matter of time.

My midlife crisis car is same price, much faster, more comfortable, and doesn’t wake the neighborhood when I drive it.

If you must relive the nostalgic, early 1900s technology of generating motion by rattling metal pistons with gasoline instead of steam then why not open Autotrader and buy any one of the Supras, 300ZX, 3000GTs, or other great 90s tuner cars that can be had for the same $50k as this 1.6 liter leaf blower. Shit, there’s a convertible 300ZX for $20k and now you’ve got $30k for mods.

Sure. But either way we aren’t going to have to worry about it. We’ll have post scarcity utopia, or we’ll have died. But there is an argument that the billionaire need to pay attention to: an ASI that kills 7 billion people won’t mind killing a few more.

Literally true. The basket of goods for US inflation metric used to include steak. Then it was changed to ground beef. You used to buy ice-cream, now you buy “frozen dairy deserts”.

SOLID is a good idea that most coders I know don’t follow because they can’t be arsed. Turns out AI is really good at writing SOLID code (if you tell it to) and SOLID code is much easier for AI to reason about.

The USA is poor now. The problem is not that companies are enshittifying ice-cream. The problem is that people are so poor that enshttified ice-cream is all they can afford.

This is only true if it plateaus. What you are saying is “I don’t think LLMs will achieve superintelligence.” Which is a fine opinion to have, but it’s an opinion.

Her language consistently defines LLMs in negative terms like “synthetic text extruder” but she claims she’s not trying to denigrate it. What’s missing for me are similar terms from her about how humans create sentences and thoughts. Judging by the state of the internet humans are quite capable of making shit up to argue their point (see latest Fox News apology). She talks about sycophantic AI but give me a car battery and some cables and I can train a sycophantic human (no I can’t but there are people who can). She’s pretty much a walking counter argument for her own claims.

Personal convenience vs societal cost? Let’s have both ffs. Fucking luddites. Same kind of folks arguing against AI because it will take their shitty low paying job. No post-scarcity future for us! We want to work in debt servitude forever!

My problem with that is it makes the shittiest bash scripts to do basic things like search for a file and it gets them wrong for minutes at a time. It’s depressing. But yeah, that’s the other option. Just don’t watch.
