I decided I wanted 2014 to be the "year of the product" for me, so I started http://bugroll.com - books and screencasts for developers.

I've "swung for the fences" in the past (anyone remember plentyoftweeps.com - twitter dating? :), but this year I want to focus on the exact opposite approach: instead of trying something that's never been done before, I want to try something that I know many others are doing successfully, to see if I earn my way into that group.

This is the first question that came to my mind too. And it feels like a more accurate model of reality, since an anonymous user is a user, just without a username/password.

You could model this in other ways on the User model too, like having a registered_at column, which, when blank, means an unregistered user. (In case, for example, you wanted to autogenerate a username for anonymous users, for display purposes.)

You're not the first person to mention that point, and I think it is a good idea. But indeed, like you say, it's a pretty difficult one, and not something I intend on putting time into for the moment.

We currently notify unregistered users with an @ message on Twitter when someone likes their profile, or sends them a message or a smile. We only ever send one of these messages, and never again, if they don't join after that. (See http://twitter.com/PlentyOfTwps for examples.)

When the user is registered, we contact them via email.

It's a good point though. I can easily change the query to include a balance of male and female photos.

Plenty of Tweeps is a dating site for Twitter users. The idea is that a person's Twitter activity stream provides a unique window into their life, something a little more authentic than a typical online dating profile.

You don't need to be a hardcore Twitter user to make use of the site though. Going through the signup process will help you create a Twitter account if you don't already have one, and allow you to easily find cool Twitter peeps in your area.

You can also upload photos and fill out a profile, which is particularly useful if you haven't tweeted much. :)

This is purely a question of what has so far been prioritized. There's a considerable amount of work involved in automating user deletion, but that feature is on the radar in the near future.

Good call. There is some bugginess related to Twitter accounts being deleted, or Twitter nicknames being changed, and having that reflected on Plenty of Tweeps.

I have since put the site through a total redesign, significantly changed the way you signal interest in Twitter users, and implemented a payment model.

Good point in linkifying city names. (There and other places, probably.)

Sticking exclusively with Twitter for now, though may consider making it easy for non-Twitter users to jump right in too (like Zoosk makes it easy to join without using FB.)

Wow, great feedback, thanks csytan! And I think you just gave me an idea for what to do about those 3 navbar buttons before the user has logged.

Marketing it organically right now. Talking to bloggers, gradually spreading our PageRank wings, etc. Have experimented with some paid advertising, but it's pretty expensive for a dating site.

Thought about it, and have no reason to feel concern. In the worst case, the expression "plenty of fish [in the sea]" was around long before the Intertubes, let alone the PoF website.

Oh yeah. Iterating my brains out to the tune of about 2-3 releases a day right now. :)
