It's not just domain names. CA and IP have the same problem.

I've been here since the beginning and I think comments have gotten more hostile since then.

I've been reading HN since around 2010 and to me it seems that there is now less hostility about technical topics but more hostility against anyone who isn't 100% politically correct. I also think that the quality of comments has decreased dramatically since.

No one outside of HN that I interact with discusses HN, and if there's ever discussion of this stereotype here, I've missed it.

Many IRC communities I'm part of know HN and sometimes discuss it and the stereotype in those seems to be that HN users are overly sensitive, hypocritical, greedy and toxic. Many of them are also former HN users who now hate the site.

She definitely does use email. I don't see what is so wrong with paying someone else to do the necessary time consuming tasks with low priority when you have other high priority things to do. Should there also be no janitors?

Secure systems are much more than just a verified kernel or userland.

None of that matters if you are using it in a modern processor full of backdoors and malicious technologies like AMT/IME/PSP.

I can't understand what people find to be so bad in it. It took half an hour to learn the basic usage and the commands aren't hard to remember at all.

The amount of animation on the page makes it really hard to look at.

E: from the graph it seems they are using Tahoe-LAFS[1] for the backend. However I won't be trusting this unless they make the frontend free software as well.

E^2: OpenPGP smartcard authentication would also be a nice feature. Thought of this because they seem to recommend YubiKeys and password managers so why not smartcards as well.

E^3: The reason for OpenPGP smarcard instead of YubiKey is that there is there it at least one completely open hardware and free software implementation for that, the FST-01[2].

It's hard to even imagine how many different places you could apply this technology in. My mind is blown.

Web server security is pretty narrow portion of all security fields.

80% isn't any better than 0%.

Setting up openvpn or similar is nontrivial

Setting up cjdns is less work than setting up SSH.

VPN are a thing.

I recommend just installing cjdns and forwarding the home end. It also encrypts your traffic. You wouldn't want to netcat in cleartext over the internet.

There are a lot of sites like this. The only thing that's sorta neat about this file is that the filesize limit is so high. Getting around the size limit is fairly easy by using split or something similar so that's not too big of a deal.

Others that come to mind are pomf.se clones like 1339.cf or comfy.moe and nekuneku's current site, uguu.se. Many paste services could also be used to achieve the same result, ix.io and sprunge.us come to mind.

These containers are pretty much glorified chroots.

If you look at the EULA you'll see that free here means free as in no cost. It is still proprietary software and isn't considered "open source" by the OSI definition[2] even tho the page claims it's "open source".

Another thing that could be interesting is your accent. My eyes were recently opened about the discrimination that happens based on that.

How do you build a wifi router without a radio? And there is no problem that has to be solved. This restriction is completely useless and hurts everyone except big companies.

Might be a chance that someone could go next to an airport and jam all of the frequencies. It's not very likely scenario and this wouldn't even prevent them from doing that. But that's I could think of.

The radio firmware is usually included in the OS. Thus if you want to change the OS on a router, phone, tablet, whatever else and that is the case you won't be able to do it at all.

This also applies to PCs. They have radios as well.

That would be a reasonable way to solve the problem that doesn't even exist. However that costs money for the manufacteurs so they are much more likely to do it by locking the firmware for the whole device.

Apple software won't be illegal because they can very easily apply for the certifications.
