Grinding leetcode != software engineering. That is my entire point, not sure why you're confused.

I'm in London, can you name these companies? I'm earning 150k GBP a year at the moment (average senior/lead as I understand is about 80 or 90?), and have interviewed at a bunch of other companies with the same level. Interviews I get are all about experience, and coding problems that are related to software engineering and not computer science.

This is definitely not true. I've been contracting for 6 years in London, and am currently in an inside IR35 role, and have quite a few friends in the same space but in frontend/devops and its all the same. The differnce is atleast 2x for senior/lead engineers in golang or python.

While I agree with you that theres a few like that, you have forgotten about the candidates that genuinely don't want to spend their spare time grinding leetcode.

I worked at facebook, when I started looking for a new job, I had to start grinding leetcode again to prepare for a new job. Take a step back and realise how ridiculous this is.

Big companies that have prestiege and pay alot of money use it to eliminate false positives, not to actually recognise true positives. If your at a big company that can afford to throw away many true postives, sure use leetcode, but the rest are hurting themselfs by blinding following the mantra of FANG.

Isn't contract work looked down upon in the US? Here in the UK, its the opposite, contractors make atleast 2x the money, and most wouldn't dream of going back to salary position because no company wants to pay that for a permanent employee (apart from american companies and qaunt finance with nice bonuses)

Its true on some degree, that you need some intelligence, but I have a few close friends who are FAANG, they are definitely not the best developers I've ever worked with, only difference is they really really cared about getting into FAANG. Getting into FAANG was basically their life ambitions, so they dedicated literally all there spare time to it.

If they're IQ tests, then why does doing a whole bunch of leetcode questions make me better at it? Isn't IQ supposed to be relatively stable throughout one's lifetime?

This gap year has been pretty common in Europe/Aus/NZ for a while. Lots of young people do it. We even have visas for it called "working holidays" so they can work a part-time bar job etc, so you dont need to save up much to do it.

20% of passively reading/watching materials, to understand the why, how, and avoid any bad patterns, and 80% actually creating/doing something I've wanted to do with that skill.

This 20/80 mix works for me well and keeps me motiviated.

I'll also notedown in a .txt file in dot points things that seem important, especially things that I feel are important and would be easy to forgot.

I think it means if you assume lunchtime is part of work or not. I'm in the UK, every job I've had is 9-5 or 9:30-5:30, with a 1 hour lunch break.

Wouldn't 52 holiday days make more sense than 4 day workweeks? Would give flexibility for people who prefer either 5 day or 4 workweeks. Allows people to actually have real time off. Personally I'd rather 2.5 months off the year to go travel/really focus on a side project, than 4 day work weeks.
