I still think it's wrong that HN needs my email address to delete accounts and comments, but yes I finally broke down and did this their way.
I'll miss the good parts of this community, but the selective moderation and toxic flag-or-downvote-truths-i-dont-like-instead-of-discuss-them parts of the community have ruined this site for me.

The parser and renderer is a pre-existing RichTextEdit widget. Add menus and save, open, and print functionality and you are over 90% of the way to a WordPad clone.
I disagree. Cutting all the useless corporate subsidies and pork would allow us to simplify tax filing and the tax code all in one fell swoop. Then we could automate a huge chunk of the IRS and reallocate their employees to other agencies that will serve the tax payers better. It's a win for everyone except corrupt politicians and their corporate masters.
What CPA charges TurboTax prices? I'm talking "standard" TurboTax, not with all the ridiculous upsells that you don't need.
I agree with everyone that it should be a completely unnecessary product, but I don't feel that it is excessively expensive for what it does.

Not everyone is in tech. Most wages have been either stagnant or increased well below actual inflation. Housing, food, and energy costs are way up, far higher than the official inflation numbers imply. Middle class purchasing power is decreasing year on year and people are relying too much on credit to maintain their previous standards of living. It’s all going to come apart once people exhaust their credit.
I think the argument could be made that giving an addict more money means giving them more money for their self destructive addictions, which is ultimately counter productive.
On the flip side, giving them more money could reduce the likelihood they turn to crime to fund their addictions.
Wouldn't a jobs program also help them while bettering society as a whole in the process and possibly teaching them a skill?
It wouldn't have to be hard labor, I'm thinking park beautification or paid internships for skilled jobs that have shortages.
Long term I see "free" money from the government just expanding the class of people that are dependent upon the government for their way of life. The old "teach a man to fish" addage.
Both the CCP and members of the American government that funded risky gain of function research at Wuhan Institute of Virology indirectly through the EcoHealth Alliance have a strong motive to coverup a lab leak as they would be considered culpable in the pandemic.
The wet market theory wouldn't even be seriously considered if it weren't for the messaging by the CCP early on and people being afraid to be labeled "xenophobic" for blaming the pandemic on the irresponsible poor safety practices that were called out in the article I linked to earlier in this thread.
Given all the evidence and ignoring the official narratives of those with something to hide, the likelihood of an accidental lab leak from WIV is overwhelming in comparison to the wet market theory where it just coincidentally appeared out of thin air in the city of Wuhan with no prior animal reservoir ever found.

Pedantically you are correct, but it is and was common to use C++ compilers as a slightly more convenient dialect of C. This gives you the performance and simplicity of the C language with some very nice quality of life improvements.
With few exceptions, C++ can mostly be treated as a superset of C.

That hasn’t been my experience at all. Also, the desktop Linux market is minuscule. It is an order of magnitude smaller than the macOS market. There’s a reason commercial software vendors don’t usually bother with it.

Honest question, what is the purpose of being so soft on crime for these DAs? I really don’t understand it.
I’m mostly talking about the partial lockdowns where only specific categories of businesses or employees were considered essential. Many of these designations were arbitrary at best and politically motivated at worst.
The problem is that some of these policy decisions weren’t “mistakes”, they were deliberate politically motivated decisions.
