Agreed. There are some things that you wouldn't expect to attenuate signals (that much) as well, such as glass, that can have a significant effect. Tinted glass can cause a 12-20db drop. In an outdoor environment you also should keep 60% of the fresnel zone clear. This has to be taken into account when thinking of line of sight.

This looks like a fantastic tool. Unfortunately I use firefox. That being said, I use similar extensions for other sites including RES for reddit. I will definitely use it if/when there is a firefox extension.

User configurable "hotkeys" would be cool as well so that the user could configure specific keys for navigation.

I was looking at the product picture for the module with the breakout board (2). It looks like the only available GPIO come from the 10-pin header at the top of the board. From what I could see it looked like there were only 6 free GPIO. Am I missing something? I did not see any datasheets or PCB layout files on their site.

I guess it depends on what you are doing. I rarely use the trackpad at all. In fact, I'd say that 85-90% of the time I have my trackpad disabled. Whether I'm working or not I tend to get by with just the keyboard (tiling wm). I guess those would be important points to me if I did any work with graphics or UI.

'task all' will display all of your tasks with the status (e.g. pending/active/completed).

'task reports' lists a number of all the premade reports that will give you some of the information you are looking for. You can also list reports based on status by doing 'task status:pending'. Please see the docs page (http://taskwarrior.org/docs/tutorials/filter.html) on using filters.

The burndown reports are pretty useful too (they are graphical and can help you visualize that status of a project very easily).

I think tiling would greatly improve the usability. If windows had tiling and something like dmenu I would be much happier. The start screen sucks, especially if you have a lot of applications that you commonly use. It's impractical to look for a application in the tiles. I know that you can go to the start screen and start typing in the name of the program (sort of like dmenu), but why should you have to go to a pointless screen to do so.

Some of these keyboard shortcuts address some of the issues pointed out in the post, but I did not see any shortcuts that allow you to edit the subject in a composition window though.

I have not been terribly inconvenienced by the changes to the interface.

There are many tasks at many jobs which require a PC (PC as in personal computer, which could be any OS as the author points out). The trade-off between a tablet device and a PC makes for a difference between ease of work, efficiency, and power.

Imagine trying to effectively generate an excel sheet. I cringe at the thought of trying to manipulate data from a tablet. You would waste a lot of time to produce something sub par. This is one example, there are many more.

Although apple reinvented the tablet market it will take greater innovation and the creation of some other tools before tablets become effective and efficient machines in the work place.

I generally don't set up RAID on any of my machines because there really is no need. A quick google search though returns tons of stuff on the archwiki, which goes through preparation and installation/execution. This isn't only the case with RAID. As awayand said, the documentation is golden.

No. I actually went through the process of installing it on a netbook about two weeks ago. First time seeing it that way. Jumped onto archwiki and gave it a quick read. I can't remember how long it took me, but couldn't have been that long.

And it certainly was not any "harder", just different than the way I'm used to. That being said, arch has some of the best documentation and user support out there.

EDIT1: a fresh install of arch usually takes me less than an hour, but it usually takes me a couple days (few hours a day) to get the system just how I like it. This is because I always change things up when I do a fresh install.

EDIT2: I think one of the things that scares people away isn't so much the text based installation, it's the fact that after the installation you pretty much have a bare system. Getting the configuration to your liking can be exhausting (especially if you've just been using a DE for your entire linux experience). When I made the switch to WMs instead of DEs it was pretty difficult to figure everything out. There are so many ways to do everything and you can mix and match everything. I hard to imagine setting up a system from nothing for a less experienced linux user, but it is definitely worth it. Just RTFM before asking questions in the forums.

A note about Arch: most WMs and DEs have support for packages that allow configuration through a GUI, although the installation is all text. Configuration through editing text can sometimes be faster when you really know your system. As the author points out, running arch can really help you to get to know your system.

Also, it's been awhile since I was "new" to linux, but arch installation can be very easy if you follow the beginners guide on the arch wiki. Everything is spelled out plain and simple.

There is a graphical installer for a branch off of arch, known as Archbang. It's basically a live system you can boot into (with openbox) and install from there (still text based really, but a little more friendly). (Some arch users also fear the road of a GUI installer because it would make it easier for people with little understanding of linux to run arch, but that is a flawed philosophy. Arch can be for learning too)

Ditto. Like a few others here I prefer xmonad though, but there are certain things that I use Windows for and it is fairly disappointing to not have the wm functionality.

As for the tyler wm video...I absolutely abhor quicktime. Never have a good experience with it.

As for tyler...a few questions:

are there keyboard shortcuts for resizing the main window, switching the active window to the main, switching active window to another workspace (in OSXs case another monitor)?

how does it handle popups (like download dialogs, or update dialogs)?

can you set it to float certain applications or application types like you can with xmonad?

For some reason (there must be a limit on the number of subthread levels) there was no reply link under your last message so I'm replying to my own in the hopes that you're reading it.

I'm sure there are quite a few wm/de threads on the arch forums. They get a little repetitive though. Maybe a thread about the less obvious subtleties and tricks for your favorite wm.

You may be right. I have only recently made the switch to wm, mostly because of the problems with gnome 3. Originally gnome was the only de that I liked, absolutely hated KDE for no real reason other than something about it bothered me. Then gnome 3 just ruined it.

Then I discovered wms. I'm probably more attracted to openbox because the stacking is closer to the sort of window management that you would get in any de.

However, I so very rarely have a bunch of windows open at once that I need to see all at once. And I can also easily open, close, move, resize, switch screens, etc. with the keyboard. I'll give it a try before I say that it's not for me though. Who knows, maybe I'll use one for when I'm working on projects.

Which tiling one do you use? awesome?

I find my system quite usable.

Most arch users attempt to solve their own problems before asking another.

What do you expect to get out of your system? Maybe Arch just isn't tailored for your needs (but you could certainly configure it to meet your needs with a pinch of effort).

Absolutely correct on the wm comment. However, I am an organized, messy person and prefer stacking wm. Currently in favor of openbox, but it may be something else tomorrow.(Note: not archbang, but I am not entirely opposed to archbang as some are. Archbang turned out to be really great for my old laptop that I use primarily as a browser, but nothing beats the real deal when it comes to my everyday-everything machine)

That nixos looks interesting, possibly something to consider for one of my personal machines.

That's the beautiful thing about arch. While figuring out configurations, tweaks, or problems for yourself may seem daunting Arch has fantastic documentation through the web on tons of issues, ranging from software- to hardware-specific. It is one of the best documented linux distros I've had the pleasure of using.

I don't know if RHEL should be included. Although the list is of Linux distros, I was thinking that it should be geared toward home users. RHEL is great, but I wouldn't pay for the license (which is actually pretty cheap) when there are many good, free distros out there.

I have to agree with splatterdash. IMHO I've only started using Arch recently and the greatest part about it so far is the amount of things I've learned to manually do while setting up and configure my system. There are many things that I had taken for granted with other distributions because they are "user friendly."

Also, risking my neck here, Archbang is a neat little distro that's pretty much arch + openbox with a few pieces of bloat. A dedicated arch user might ask "why?," but it is extremely easy to use and install (and it is arch). Just something to take a look at if you decided you're too lazy to look at the arch wiki and take 10 minutes to do the real install. Archbang is polished enough and more of a "complete" preassembled distro that I thought would have done a lot better.

Plus, who doesn't love to tinker.

I would say that there are strong parallels between programming and math as well as programming and grammar. Programming structures and syntax are just a form of 'grammar' for different languages. Learning these skills at a young age would, in my opinion, strengthen the conceptual understanding of the material. Programming is also rhythmic and ordered, much like thought processes when tackling long or complex math problems. I would like programming to be seen as one of those basic/core curricula by the time that I have children in the school system, but I will teach him/her anyway.

I am an idealist though, and what may work for some kids would probably hinder others.
