wow I read the original post and now this. Though I disagree with (this post's) author on some points, he is correct that the the regulation is mostly reasonable. If it was up to me, I would remove items 5,6. They strike me as an unreasonable burden on both homeowner and airbnb respectively.

I see no reason why an in law unit should be regulated differently within the 75 day period of allowed hosting.

I often disagree with Jeff Sachs, but I find his argument here highly persuasive.

- There is no reason the US should be giving away IP for free

- The US Government should use its purchasing power as a check against the drug companies

- Drug companies should be able to reap profits, but profits at a 10-20x P/E not 100x

this is really nothing other than very straight forward "Insurance". In the long run, the optimists almost always win. Keeping money sitting idle and constantly rolling short dated put options is not a particularly sophisticated trading strategy.

Though this is an interesting thought experiment, the author misses one key point: Advertising has historically only been about 1% of GDP and there is nothing to suggest that it will grow. To suggest that Advertising can support increasingly large parts of the economy is a bit unrealistic.

Something like this could be extremely valuable inside an organization. A lot of very valuable knowledge is locked up by employees with no incentive to reveal it.

I'm yet to see this mythical Uber Logistics play, and their ancillary products, RUSH, EATS, CARGO etc all seem poorly thought through and bolted on, not deeply integrated into their car driver base.

I should also note that this is probably partially a regulatory problem. I'm not sure NYC (and other cities) will allow livery cars to simultaeously be delivery cars. Of course Uber has demonstrated an ability to bend the law to their will, so we will see.

this would be more useful if it had some subjective measures as well like "build quality" Galaxy s6 comes up as most similar to the droid turbo which seems fairly off base to me. CPU chipset generations would also be helpful to prevent this type of result

Israel (obv a different scale than china) has recently also experienced a big push toward desal. What's interesting is there's a moore's law type of effect at play here, desal keeps getting cheaper and cheaper to the point where it's actually a practical alternative to ground water, filtering etc.

I think water will be another great Malthusian disappointment, ocean water is basically unlimited (correct me if I'm mistaken), and on a 20-50 year time horizon it seems that the world should be able to alleviate all water scarcity by tapping it.

The one big problem with this exam is that the candidates are not well normalized across countries. You don't really get an apples to apples comparison since countries like Japan have a tendency to cherry pick who takes the test.

I can assure you that I am no shill. One thing I will say is that it took a few weeks to get everything "in the flow" (socks go in this drawer, wash this but not that etc) , but once they know your routine it's quite incredible to watch everything happen on autopilot.

As a Current Alfred customer in NYC I can say that the service has been a huge help, and not in the "shut in" way suggested by this article.

Having my laundry, groceries and packages taken care of for me allows me to maximize my weekends.

I think one of the other reasons Alfred is so useful is that it removes 100% of the cognitive load of chores. Services like flycleaners and instacart are actually only marginally helpful since the user still needs to think about laundry and groceries.

The best case for aereo was that they used their hack of the copyright system to eventually lobby to change the laws and become "legit". IMO there were always pretty slim chances of that happening. Still sad though, I hate the current copyright system as much as anyone.

I never understood how companies like instacart explained this to their investors. Over time one of several things must happen: 1. Instacart magically makes a courier capable of doing 4 trips an hour 2. Instacart drastically increases it's prices 3. Instacart Severely lowers the compensation to courriers

I don't see the value over using something like Venmo or square cash.

I don't understand why this needs to be limited to Zero-Emissions vehicles. Any new car manufacturer will have difficulty implementing the dealer model.

I'm fairly certain this is more for users and not developers. Giving people an easy small window for little-apps makes a lot of sense to me.
