武侠 (Wuxia) culture is big in Alibaba. Everyone has a 花名 (alias / nickname) in the company. In the early days, people just picked names from 金庸 (Jin Yong)'s novels. Jack Ma's 花名 is 风清扬, who is a great sword master in one of the novels. Source: I had a short stint there.

Picking 玄铁, which also comes from Jin Yong's novel, seems rather natural in that context.

Jin Yong's novels are very popular in Chinese speaking countries and regions. Most readers won't associate them with China. I don't think it has anything to do with national pride. Culture pride? I don't see much either.

If you don't do it already, take regular breaks. That helped me recover from RSI.

The difficult part is remembering to take regular breaks. I use a piece of software call Workrave and have been very satisfied with it.

I ran my email infrastructure before but deemed it too much hassle. I would rather offline the burden to a service provider.

When I say "writing code", it would be more or less like the newmail script here. Much simpler than running a full fledge email infrstructure. :-)

I upvoted you. Yes, APT was the major reason I chose Debian 15 years ago. It was much better than RPM without YUM (it wasn't part of RH systems back then IIRC).

Nowadays the competitive edge of APT could have diminished, but I never looked else where because I have been quite happy with APT.

I love Debian as a user. I considered becoming a DM then DD -- I read all the relevant documents and tested water with maintaining a package I used -- but ultimately gave up due to the bureaucracy and politics involved.

There are bugs though. I'm using Debian Stretch. Right click menu doesn't work: it appears for a fraction of a second then disappears; so does the top-bar menu of LastPass plugin.

"We've a better language now" -- presumably you mean Rust, which tries to break into C and C++'s market.

If you check https://forge.rust-lang.org/platform-support.html , ARM is only tier 2 support, while Kovri seems to care enough to cover ARM. That's a legitimate reason to not choose Rust.

The practice of your company has no bearing of the practice of Alibaba. Alibaba could be better, Alibaba could also be worse.

Disclosure: I'm a Chinese working oversea and am genuinely interested in reacquaint myself with the business practice in China.

There are tons of foreigners in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen so there must be some ways to get into the country (and work there).

A few years back a friend told me work permit was easy to get as long as you got a sponsor. Not sure how hard it is today though.

Expressways are sexy and useful if you are driving thru. But...I have the feeling they are overbuilding it in many places while not caring much about the less sexy roads that might improve local lives more.

IMHO you're having this backward. Without the major infrastructure spearheading the development of this region, there won't be interest (money) to overhaul the local roads and bridges.

The problem with most apt-based distributions is I've found that a lot of packages are out of date.

If you want APT based distro + rolling update, Debian testing is what you need.

(Obviously if you're satisfied with Arch, there is no need to change.)

I think EC2 supports both PV and HVM guests, right?
