It's much easier to blame everyone else instead of trying to change myself

The cynical side of me wonders if some books might be "banned" on purpose to have the distinction of being a banned book. Probably few books are actually that way, but these days it seems like a shortcut to notoriety

Kids like repetition in their media. They often ask to watch the same movie for days/weeks on end, or read the same story every night, or the same story. And if you don't tell it the same way they remind you...

Suffice it to say, repetition isn't the same frustration that it can be for adults

Perhaps true malice, then, resides not in the monsters themselves but in the systems that classify them as enemies No, malice does not come from the systems. It comes from us who make the systems

Perhaps upgrade to one a few versions out of date but confirmed to be good?

"Wait, those are real people whose jobs I cut? I thought they were just numbers"

And, in weird circumstances, men can lactate. There's even a story about a viking whose name is escaping me who nursed his son after his wife died.

The world we live in is capitalistic. We can imagine another world that isn't, but when we're considering specific pieces of technology, it's worthwhile to judge it by how it will perform or be exploited in the world we live in.

Now I'm trying to imagine a way they could apply a criminal charge against an AI in such a way that it would prevent the AI from being used in official capacity or something

On the plus side, the current administration isn't obscuring the corruption like previous administrations, which is somewhat refreshing.

It's very disconcerting to think that this "innocent" toy or clothing I see my children playing with as "tainted" by this monster. Suddenly he's not just some nebulous monster out there, but in some way the idea of him is here with my children, arousing protective instincts without anything in particular to direct that energy towards.

It also shows him as a human like other humans, which then makes me ponder is that person walking down the street also a monster? Could I become a monster like Epstein?

Such thoughts are very disconcerting

And have schools stop giving kids laptops or tablets. I wonder how much of the Chromebooks for school incitive was to develop a new market for Google

Everyone thought that we were designing the system, but it's really been the system designing us.

(Only half joking; the medium is the message, and changes us as much as we change it)

I think some of the released documents included images of victims, which where redacted. So it's not necessarily malicious removals

The Sun Eater series is an interesting one that kind of goes both ways. The big alien baddies are basically demons, and humanity gets a lot of love, but all the politicking and whatnot shows humanity to be both good and bad

Hopefully without spoiling it, Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time has an interesting take on game theory at the end

There's an instinct in many of us to destroy and pervert, and it can lead to very dark places.

Many of the fairy tales have it too. Maybe its something deeper common to humanity

Its the messy application of FDR's claim that the USA should be the arsenal of democracy and should protect people everywhere. Which sounds all well and good, until you get different ideas about what is the best and that 'I' know better than you. Basically all the mess of the Cold War and propaganda and advertising

The FBI is also used by various organizations to investigate various crimes, whether real or not. For instance, the Bureau of Industry and Security thought my company was flaunting export regulations and had the FBI raid my company to investigate. It turned out to largely be due to a paperwork problem, but the BIS didn't have the power to investigate so they contracted the FBI to provide the manpower to do the raid. So who we saw was the FBI, but it was really the BIS originating the raid.

Almost every map is oriented wrong. They should be oriented towards the East (orient comes from the Latin word for east)

While there's some things that's can be done in the political and legislation spheres, there's a lot more need for just basic human relationships. Talking to those people and making friendships with those who different than you, and might be a little scary or uncomfortable. I suspect a lot of out social and political problems could be solved were we to get off of these shiny screens and spend time being in our bodies, building relationships with real people who don't fit all of our lofty ideals

Two problems: 1. We don't have community anymore and thus don't have people helping us when we're emotionally and mentally sick. 2. AI chatbots are the crappy plastic replacement of community.

There's going to be a lot more stuff like this, including AI churches/cults, in the next few years.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole of higher order intelligences, look up egregores. I know John Vervake and Jordan Hall have done some work trying to describe them, as well as other people studying cognition. But when you get into that you start finding religion discussing how to interact them (after all, aren't such intelligences what people used to call gods?)

The brain drain started decades ago. We've been importing people for STEM jobs and exporting manufacturing for a while, leaving behind large numbers of people with no hope for a better future. Now the rest of the country faces that prospect as well
