you are the minority, and so am I. I hate that stuff in most games, and rarely fork over my cold hard cash.

But the middle aged women demo does not think like your typical HN reader. And that demo is orders of magntude larger than the HN community.

At best, OP should pray to monetize 2% of their audience. Of that, only maybe 15% end up being repeat customers.

and remember, 37% of all stats quoted on the internet are made up. but you get my point ;)

Take my $0.99 and give me an ad free version!

Take additional $0.99s and give me boosters, like clock extenders, wild letters, and hints.

Leaderboards. OMG. Leaderboards...

Let me grow your user base by inviting my FB friends in exchange for said boosters.

Relevant leaderboards (because people i know are on them)

Spend half of those $0.99s and hire a designer to create a design that caters to the middle aged women crowd. Spend the other half of the $0.99s on advertising. Web / Fb of course, but late night TV seems to do exceptionally well for that demo.

Recoup those $0.99s by running your own ads for said ad free version and boosters with a larger audience.

Maybe I'm missing the obvious... but how exactly do I share anything? After connecting, all I see is a list of the articles I have in Pocket.

Reading the docs, I understand it to be a proxy for your APIs. You setup a service for api.somedomain.com, and then you change that URL in your app to be someprefix.apitools.com.

Being a developer who heavily utilizes internal and external APIs, I like the idea of a tool like this, however, I'm really hesitant to run all calls through a single 3rd party. Especially one this green.

The next question I have is, what about auth? It seems like it could get really messy / insecure using something like this.

Seems like a great project to open source and to run on your own hardware.

First, I am as much of an RM fanboy as you can get. I have used RM for a couple years now, and often recommend it to others. RM 3 has been great and keeps me highly efficient (I came from a .net world where I used R# a lot).

So I see RM 4 came out today. Normally with any software I rely on for my day to day work, I wait at least a couple weeks before upgrading. However, against better judgement I start the download and install it.

Now I'm screwed.

700% CPU spikes on project open. Then it hangs, completely unresponsive, chewing up 100% CPU. I went to lunch and upon my return I see it's no longer using 100% CPU but it's still hung.

My scenario, Ubuntu 11.10, i7, 8gb ram.

YMMV, but I'd wait if I were you.

P.S. Anyone from jetbrains, feel free to contact me. I love the product and am confident this is a release day issue that you will get resolved quickly.

Update

I found that opening a smaller project would work, but that the initial (largish) project would not load. After allocating 4gb of ram to RM, it finally opened.

edit this file to do the same: RM_path/bin/rubymine64.vmoptions

I went with these for settings:

-Xms512m -Xmx4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=700m -XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=128m -ea

In my "better safe than sorry" opinion, $1000 seems like an ok price to pay to be safe. However, if it's not required, and you're covered for general liability, workmans comp, etc, I don't think I'd go for it.

Pairing with a FTE, having good tests, etc all make the situation sound safer, but I'm not sure you should take them into consideration when buying insurance. Shit still happens even if someone is there watching with you.

Show HN: Craft.ly 15 years ago

sure. We're not talking 1000's though. 10-20 is more realistic. Something your average crafter can create in a few days.

Show HN: Craft.ly 15 years ago

absolutely agree. We not talking volumes of 1000's though. We're on the scale of 10-20. something your average crafter can accomplish (depending on the item of course) in a few days.

I don't know that we will put limits though. I mean, someone could print off 1000 paper bookmarks pretty easily.

In the end, our rating / award system should help drive sellers to not over commit. It's something we will have to deal with.

You're the 2nd or 3rd person to assume we're talking Groupon scale. I think we need to do a better job of indicating the scale we're targeting. :)

Show HN: Craft.ly 15 years ago

Help me understand your definition of "high volume". Based on the conversations we've had with crafters (admittedly, few and people we know at this point) we're talking volume on the scale of 10-20 items. Not 100's or even 1000's.

We will be talking with more crafters before solidifying the model.

Further backing this is the ability that Etsy and other craft selling sites give to their users for indicating a quantity.

As for products, it absolutely depends on the crafter. Items made with a pattern will work great. Knitted items, quilted items, wooden crafts, metal crafts, etc are all good. Even photography. It ultimately boils down to the crafter being able to reproduce an item with consistent quality.

Show HN: Craft.ly 15 years ago

See my reply to vyrotek below.

It's really more along the lines of Kickstart than Groupon in that you put a "listing" out to the public that has an end date, and people commit to buying during that time.

Show HN: Craft.ly 15 years ago

No. Those sites tend to be mass produced (like 1000's) type things.

The idea behind Craftly is to be a place that allows someone who, say, makes stocking caps by hand. They want to sell them, but don't want to invest a ton of time w/o committed buyers, and don't want to spend a day setting up a "store".

We plan to allow sellers to set tiers for their item. So for example, if 1-3 people want that hat, they pay $10. if 4-6, then the price drops to $9, 7-10 $8 and if more than 10 the price drops to $7.

Everyone who gets in on the deal gets the final price. So if your the 1st or the 15th, you'd get the $7 price in that example.

Does that help clarify?

Show HN: Craft.ly 15 years ago

snarkyness aside :)

what do you mean? I'm ultimately looking for feedback / questions on the idea based on the info provided in the site. Should i have named the HN post something different than Show HN? I read HN a lot and it seems there's no 100% right way to put your idea / product in front HN.

but yeah, feedback is what I'm after. Not to show of a launched product.

WakeMate review 16 years ago

You can review the down hill roller coaster for yourself with a quick google search, but the summary is "just two more weeks! we're so sure it will only be two more weeks!" for the last 9 months (giving them a 4 month buffer since that's what was originally promised).

Now we top it off by chastising a reviewer in public?

Really?

This is something we've been working on for a while now. We had a pretty big shift in focus a couple months ago from developing player stats, scheduling, etc to online player registration.

We did this for two reasons. One, because this is what the leagues we talked to were telling us they needed.

And second, to be completely honest, because we need to focus on revenue generation. We are bootstrapped. We each maintain a 9-5'er to pay the bills. And we are both passionate about getting this off the ground. But to do so, we need to generate revenue.

With that said, we love feedback and we love introductions to potential customers and people who can help us move forward.

Thanks for reading.

More and more stories like this have been popping up in the Silicon Prairie. It's awesome to show another example of a great startup, working with local companies, taking the next step.

Congrats guys!

I'm hesitant to share such a poorly written article, but the topic is a great one. It highlights a great city here in the Midwest that is starting to do some great things in the startup world. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the Kauffman Labs is able to produce.

We've been working with the WePay API, integrating it into Scoreyard, for the past few weeks. I can't make the in person event, but can be available on IRC / Email / Skype for a good portion of the hackathon to provide some Rails support.

I'd be interested in a Justin.TV stream of the workshop presentations too.

Who would want to buy property in california in the past couple of years? Does this lawyer not watch the news? Seems like Zuck's a pretty smart dude. Smart enough to realize the real estate mark sucks in california.
