This is analogous to arguing against exploring the Americas because Europe had poverty.

It seems to me that over a couple hundred year time horizon the new land, resources, technologies and economies of scale added by the new world were clearly a net benefit to europeans as a whole and paid back the initial investment many times over.

The full process is the better part of a decade in the best case (e.g. expensive lawyers, STEM degree, immigrating from an easy country like Canada). If you're from a country like China or India where lots of other people are also applying for those slots - or if anything else is less than optimal - you're looking at between a decade+ and never.

This is not constructive advice. It is a heck of a lot more complicated than this is making it out to be. You wouldn't leave your loved one with a broken leg until the "found their own way" to the doctor.

In general I've always agreed with this view. But I can't help but wonder how studies like this explain Berkshire Berkshire Hathaway.

This is really cool and well done. I'm unhappy with the stats they chose though.

I thought that 20x less robberies seemed unlikely so I clicked their source. They were using the absolute number of robberies not per capita. The way they used it is sneakiness bordering on outright lies. This kind of bad-faith abuse of stats always irritates me.

When I first heard about this in passing I had to investigate further because I just couldn't believe someone could go to jail for making a youtube video expressing a view. Especially not for decades with no warning. I was under the (clearly naive) impression that the 1st amendment was a right that belongs to all Americans. Can anyone explain how this can be legally justified?

This is awesome, I'm a big fan. I love it because (excepting the spontaneous creation of General AI) the treatment of future AI seems so plausible. Few people consider how we will handle this stage of AI development, but undoubtedly there will be lots of cool stuff like that between here and self-improving super intelligent computers.

This is a badly reasoned article. If the total stock of vehicles is decreasing it creates a lot of savings (as the article admits). How are these savings captured? In cheaper Ubers. The total cost of all the cars on the road is already being paid for out of our transportation costs. As each vehicle gets shared between more people the cost to each person goes down. Obviously there will be an equilibrium between lower prices from fewer vehicles and higher convenience from having extra capacity. But, using resources more efficiently won't cause harm. Even if the total vehicle stock were to decrease as much as the article suggests the price of an uber would drop much faster than the convenience.

Now this all assumes an efficient market. If Uber were to start abusing its monopoly powers, that would be something to be legitimately concerned about...

I definitely met all of these symptoms as a kid, down to the hours of elaborate stories and the repetitive motions. I've since outgrown it, I got too busy to return to my fantasy chracters. But I'll always miss them a bit.

This is very different though, because it would throw an error.
