Publishers who own the IP to titles can claim copyright to the gameplays. Since it is basically free promotion for their games, it's against their best interest. Hence, you see them offering their blessing and support to YouTubers.

While the crowds were huger than I've ever seen, I agree with you on the talks. It was refreshing to hearing from Ben Horowitz. Ron Conway, a living legend IMO, provides fascinating stories of tech giants (the part about Sergey and Larry feeling doubtful of ever getting to be successful as Sean Fanning was cool to hear). Finally, I really enjoyed hearing insights from Jessica, who interfaces with all these YC founders.

While San Jose pales in comparison to San Francisco, as a Bay Area native I've always enjoyed Santana Row, some parts of downtown (near 1st Street) and some of the outskirt cities like Campbell and Los Gatos. The only thing about the South Bay is that since everything is so spread apart, cab/uber rides are a bit pricier than SF.

If you're in town for Startup School, I highly recommend journeying up to SF afterward.

"5 years ago, in the middle of 2007:"

One thing he forgets to mention is how companies raised capital back then. In the middle of 2007, fundraising was far different than it is today. The deal flows were much longer, accelerators such as YC were almost unheard of, and investors had less overall competition.

I remember going through fundraising with my last employer in 2007. We raised a $1.5 Series A (not a seed, something comparable to seeds today), had far less term sheets than companies get today, and winning a UC Berkeley business plan competition was our access to a pool of investors (unlike a demo day for YC, 500, Techstars).

Definitely a smart decision by Marissa. The savings from feeding employees is definitely outweighed by the productivity and morale gained from satisfied employees. Make your employees feel proud and good to work there.

Mentor qualities: - Someone who has accomplished what you're looking to achieve. - Someone who can helped expand your network - Someone who picks up the phone when you call

How to meet them: - Follow them on twitter - Connect with them on Linkedin or FB - See if they speak or attend events.

It might be analogous to stalking but be incredibly classy with them. If they're not responsive, move onto your list of potential mentors. Hope this helps.
