That said; I am going to censor the curses and I apologise to both sides because on one hand I'd love to be bold about it but on the other I acknowledge this is a public forum.

Maybe if they didn't suck their own dks so hard this entire fking situation not only would've been more belivable but also -- if it were somehow as real as they claimed -- be less theoretically terrifying that one of the most universally despised companies was treating this with such casual disregard for safety.

Good lord; this wasn't even remotely good PR because all they did was convince anyone stupid enough to fall for it that they deserve to be legislated out of existance while everyone else no longer laughs at such absurd claims and instead cringes.

This didn't read like an ad or a warning of the future; it read like the death rattle of a corporation struggling to remain relevant.

I can say with a reasonable amount of confidence that going "but china" isn't going to help the US much going forward.

The US is currently aggravating practically every other country on the planet and writing like this only pisses everyone else involved all the more.

i feel like the author of this newsletter is doing themselves a disservice by having the "money pls" be a wall of text that occupies the entirety of a phone screen.

people always talk about how they just close any site that doesn't display the article immediately or has popups that interrupt you mid-reading.

i'm not saying they can't ask at all but maybe shorten it a little and have it link to something a little more verbose?

i suggest this because people are very scroll happy; they don't scroll slowly unless they're already invested or see something that immediately piques their interest.

a wall of irrelevant text will just make people fly through the article itself, go "oh wow it keeps going" and then just give up and hit the back button.

my issue is that people insist their written ai work -- including documentation -- is correct only for myself and many others to repeatedly discover this isn't the case.

there's also the issue that people keep switching models when their quota is used up and so at first it seems to all be in order but upon digging in suddenly it hugely diverges in tone/usefulness if it doesn't just collapse in on itself outright; making diving into documentation even more of a hassle than it was before.

even worse is that when they bring back in the previous model upon quota reset it just consumes the information from the crappier/cheaper one and errors start compounding and you want to report it and they're like "sorry we closed our public issue tracker yoy have to join our discord server" and then you have to grab the attention of extremely unwilling developers who repeatedly insist there isn't a problem until you start copy-pasting their quite frankly shit documentation en-masse.

then its "oh that's a typo; the command is correct 25 pages/sections ago so why would you believe it in this section when it's obvious that its wrong here?" like it's your fault they can't keep their goddang slop together and parse through the glaring errors.

a manual should be able to be pulled off a bookshelf (or opened if digital) and allow you to flip to the relevant page so that you can refer to it as a reference and these jerks are hellbent on blaming users for when their jank documentation looks clearly hallucinated by 3 seperate LLMs.

it is beyond frustratung.

Not saying I don't appreciate the write-up but I wish they titled it "send-only".

While setting up your own e-mail server is like pulling teeth there are still plenty of people interested in doing it anyway... and I could see it being really annoying if you thought you finally found /the/ guide only to be let down once again.

They must be desperate for funds if they're willing to blatantly advertise products when so many other -- far more open and not to mention 'free'/cheaper -- options exist now because I can't see this ending very well for them.

That said a lot of the heavy AI users I've met seem to consume massive amounts of ads and allow said ads to influence them already despite their insistance to the contrary. I'm not going to claim that I am immune to propaganda here and act like I'm somehow above falling for it as well, but...

... well, there have been times where those people have quite literally parroted all the claims an ad made about a particular product word-for-word and then proceed to fight me to the death over whether or not they're quoting said aforementioned ad despite the fact that they keep regurgitating the made-up words (for this example lets say 'scrubbing bubbles') that aren't /actually/ a thing.

So who knows; maybe it'll work... but uh I can't say I know anyone that uses chatgpt anymore lmfao.

No -- really, I'm not being dismissive here. The average person has given up on RAM prices coming down. They aren't stopping their consumption of such (although they are slowing down) but everyone and their grandma knows RAM is expensive and it going from "really expensive" to "really realy expensive" is not going to phase 99% of the population at this point.

1000 dollarydoos for a stick of RAM vs 1250 dollars isn't gonna make it any less accessible when it's already inaccessible.

I also find it highly suspect that every time china announces it has made major strides in producing good-enough memory that suddenly every western news site/station/app is all "omg ram will never get cheaper".

i really wish people addicted to using ai would realise that people aren't saying they can't use it at all; it's just most of us prefer there to be a human involved in an interaction even if whatever the end result is flawed or less accurate.

there's also the issue in that while an ai can theoretically help someone do more than they could otherwise that whenever it either stops working or becomes too expensive to use then everyone else relying on you and/or whatever you produced with it are all left up shit creek without a paddle

and there is nothing more infuriating then getting 80% of a job done only to find everything coming to a screeching halt because the person armed with an AI can't do that last 10-20% because they were never qualified to do it in the first place.

abandoned github projects

unknowable pull requests where the person just evaporates upon basic questioning quotas being hit and finding yourself having to wait 1-3 weeks only for it all to be rewritten because they changed AI/LLMs from -- not using real names -- BananaEgg 14.29 to Caludia v6.3 and can't get the new one to pick up from where the old one left off without it rewriting it all

and then -- consequently -- hitting said aforementioned quota limit and slowing everything and everyone down AGAIN.

so doing that to friends? the people who care about you as a person? that's messed up or, hell; that's just... mental illness.

imagine how rude it is to just dump 400 commits into a project/tool using an AI and then spamming hn or reddit with links to it all while promising the world to those who come across it...

and now imagine doing that to your friendships?

unfortunately that probably won't be solved anytime soon because the entire point is to make you blow through it all asap and buy more.

This article is written like someone sat around and wrote out as many potential buzzwords as possible and then came up with definitions after the fact.

mozilla only began babbling about open source ai when they got their teeth extracted for free via the entire community giving them the curbiest of curbstomps.

i still use firefox but hot damn did they utterly fail to read the room initially. the only other company i can think of in recent memory -- besides sony cutting out discs -- is logitech when their ceo began gibbering about a subscription mouse or microsoft and its copilot button(s).

John Pebble sold his community and their collective souls for a corn chip and I genuinely don't understand why they all went rushing back to him; particularly after he went on his little social media crusade against rebble and accused them of stealing and gatekeeping the apps/software that were already -- and have been for years now -- avaliable.

Every time he makes a post I can't help but somehow lose even more respect for him and his stupid ring is so enviromentally unfriendly and anticonsumer that even if I was given one for free by him I would likely still spit in his face and cuss him out.

it's gonna suck but much like the pain of untethering ourselves from the US economy we acknowledge it's gonna be painful. a lot of lumber companies in canada rn have been going in and collecting fallen trees and dead bush all around populated areas and turning it into paper and cheap lumber but we suppressed fires for so long that it's gonna be a rough time for a while.
