Yeah I believe modern trigonometry and the terms sine and cos also trace their origins to Sanskrit through Arabic. It's a shame that ancient/medieval India contributed so much to science and math but hasn't been able to innovate in centuries past :(

But since stores here don't really support OAuth, and using a private API may not be the best long term approach, I paused my effort. I would love to chat if you are interested. I am working on an app to track grocery purchases from online receipts. My goal is to track the effects of inflation on prices, and build something like Mint, but with itemized transactions from receipts.

Interestingly enough, Orange is called "oranju" in Tamil, a Dravidian language.

Also an immigrant, and I have observed that some immigrants tend to be become more conservative when they move. Or perhaps they have stopped evolving when their peers in the home country have moved on. I think this might be partly due to dealing with the trauma of displacement, and partly due to lack of diversity in thinking. I have mainly noticed this in a generation older than mine.

While this is a major misstep in my opinion, I think there is a major imbalance in reputable media in the world. We need more non-Western sources of media that are respected. People are realizing, as in this case, that Western countries have skeletons in their cupboards too, and will stop respecting Western media establishments. Imagine China sanctioning the US for treating black people with impunity.

I am not an expert on Buddhism, but I grew up in India and noticed similarities with Hinduism in two countries: Bhutan and Thailand. The Buddhist temples were very ornate and seemed to be focused on the devotional aspects. If you apply what Chen is saying to Hinduism, it strikes true to me: meditation and yoga are very recent trends in India, and most people focus on the ritualistic and devotional aspects.

I feel like there were a few attempts at this in the Bay Area but none seemed to have survived long term.
