Simplest explanation comes from Tory Bruno: they design with a factor of safety just above 1. 1.1 to 1.25. This is one of the reasons they wait for good weather to launch… they are trying to maximize payload. Also until recently, it’s been sort of a vicious cycle: rocket is very exquisite and expensive, so spacecraft needs to last longer and thus gets more exquisite and expensive, etc.

There is a big market for it, but I don’t think that market exists until you go another 10+ years down the road. And then that market will likely be largely filled by used EVs.

The problem I see is that many people are skeptical of EVs, most people don’t have experience with EVs or any existing EV infrastructure (a charger at home), and having an extra car kind of sucks (parking, registration, insurance, etc).

It’s more common among the sporty bikes. A lot of these bikes didn’t even have a fuel gauge until that long ago. Just a fuel light. Tons of guys say they go about 100 miles for fill ups. Maybe that’s cause of the history of the bikes, you want a number that’s easy to remember cause you were really looking at the odometer as your gas gauge. Even a Harley bob only has 165 miles of range according to the website. Assume you don’t go from absolutely full to empty, 1 gallon less than the maximum, you’re at 120 miles.

Yeah the live wire is real expensive. Where are you going to charge it? It doesn’t make sense. Compared to a car the battery is tiny, so you should be able to charge at like full DC fast charge rates on a level 2 charger. Except the original livewire had a super weak built in charger so it couldn’t charge at above 1.4kw? So you had to look for dc chargers. It failed for really good reasons. That’s the point I’m trying to make, it failed for good reasons. I think it’s actually rational.

Traditional motorcycles are a terrible use case for replacing with electric right now. But on the commuter side they are becoming insanely popular (although I think usually they are the illegal suron type bikes).

I think you’re way off tbh. Something like 85% of the motorcycle market is for pleasure. Plenty of those bikes have a range of only ~100 miles as it is. Stopping is not really the problem. The problem is the charging infrastructure does not exist and the charge times are way too long.

Do some motorcycle owners commute on their bikes? Of course, but that’s clearly the minority of the market. The reason cycle trader is full of low mileage bikes is that the whole activity is kind of a pain in the ass when you think about it. Add charging to that and it’s just too much to bear.

Pleasure riders often ride on nice sunny sundays in groups to ruralish areas where it’s scenic and the roads are winding with few traffic lights etc. they need to be able to “gas up” a significant number of bikes quickly. And that shit is a pain to organize so they do it like twice a year. Hence the low mileage.

Electric motorcycles really are a super hard sell. The stark varg makes way more sense cause that’s a type of motorcycle that gets carried to the destination most of the time anyway. So the range thing is way less of an issue and the upsides stand out way more. That’s probably why I see way, way more Vargs or bikes like them than live wires.

100%. Tire technology is a real thing. Tires have advanced a ton in the last 10 years. But driving style is the biggest thing. Some people can only get 10k miles out of a set of tires, while others with the same car and tires get over 40k.

But they do care about tire wear a lot, they know the acceptable wear life for the class. A couple years ago I bought a set of Pirelli tires that were ~50% off because they were an older version; hoping I’d get some benefit. Unfortunately they had half the life and were a bit worse in every way than the newer tires I had before and after.

It’s actually worse than that though. Ford got rid of the heavy duty package on the f150 and said to customers “just buy the f250 instead”. Which is even more tonka.

The Starbucks example to me is a bad example, and seems very cherry picked. They mention the one time stock bonuses he got, most likely part of his recruitment. He’s a highly sought after fast food executive. They also got him to work in Seattle. Last time he switched companies (Taco Bell to Chipotle) they moved their headquarters to him in Newport Beach. Chipotle moved their headquarters from Colorado to California, and their stock went up ~5x during his tenure. That’s probably why he got a huge signing bonus. And Chipotle wasn’t paying him peanuts either, apparently he made $38M one year and was averaging around $20M.

He stated his plan with Starbucks is focused on “theater” and in person service. Doesn’t sound like coffee bot to me.

Because people think the progress shown with gpt5 is unimpressive. Meanwhile Claude is very successful, Grok has come out of nowhere and according to some benchmarks matches or exceeds gpt5 slightly. Pretty much. The math is pretty simple: the more you drive the more economical an ev is due to it being more efficient and lower maintenance. Fighting against EVs is fighting an uphill battle. But I suppose it’s the only logical thing to do for the oil companies, and so many people are afraid of change they can easily leverage that. The whole range anxiety thing for instance is such a joke.

The article never says how much they detected. I can only assume it’s because it’s a nothing amount. If it was significant they would have been saying how much. It’s hard to take the article seriously as a result. We have crazy sensitive tests now, they do nothing in the article to show it’s not just another story about how sensitive testing is these days.

Keep in mind stucco is very common in Southern California. Basically a 7/8” thick layer of concrete on all the exterior walls. It is fire resistant. Many such buildings burned down.

The things you are pointing out are largely styling choices. The difference in quality of finishes are, like mentioned, solid surface quartz counters which are basically stain proof, large porcelain tiles, toilets that flush more effectively, low voc paints, engineered wood flooring that doesn’t warp and creak, etc.

Same thing has happened in corvettes. Corvette has has electronic doors since at least the c6 (2005) and just like the Tesla has a manual release. But people still get “trapped” and die. There was even a story of an older guy dying in his corvette from asphyxiation because he couldn’t figure it out in ~30 mins.

In fact the Tesla release is more intuitive than the corvette. The corvette has it on the floor, the Tesla it’s right in front of the window switches. In my experience people pull the manual release thinking it’s the primary all the time.

But yeah, never mind the fact that electronic door latching has been around in the industry before Tesla even existed, and is present in VW and VW group vehicles let alone most other brands.

There are much newer products than boeshield which have a lot higher wax content, preform a lot better, and don’t have the nasty stuff in them like naphtha.

Silca ss drip, ufo drip, flower power wax are all drip on lubes that all test better than boeshield (last longer, less chain wear, etc).

Boeshield is only 2.5% wax.

The reason is the same reason these issues come up in Motorsports. In reality, technology matters. And sponsors (Nike, Pirelli, etc) are attracted to the sport in part for that reason. Sports don’t exist at the level they do without sponsors. So it’s a synergistic thing. The governing body has to come up with rules, and try to enforce them.

Why don’t they use recumbent bikes at the Tour? They are way faster, way more aerodynamic. But the rules prohibit it because bike companies think (almost certainly correctly) that they won’t sell like normal bikes due to the myriad issues with them.

People may think that something as simple as running is “pure” but they are just uninformed. Aerodynamic skin suits are useful in running (and have been used to win gold at the Olympics).

Pickup truck front end design has nothing to do with this. It’s entirely based on Tonka Truck design principles I.e. bigger and boxier and higher is more tough! Tough = good! It’s the same reason glove sizing at Home Depot starts at XL and goes up from there.

In reality pickup trucks are kind of a joke. For instance the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, often cited as being “good” cause it’s smaller, has worse gas mileage than an f-150 and has a max payload of 900lbs. You know what else has a max payload of 900lbs? A sedan.

Ford actually got rid of the heavy duty package from the f-150 (which increased the max payload to around 3,000lbs from about 1500) because they said people weren’t buying it…

You can’t fill the bed of an F-150 with sand, with plywood, with cement bags, with lots of building materials. You can easily overload it.

Most of policing is scarecrow. Deterrence is the name of the game. One time my credit card number was stolen, and they purchased airline tickets for more than $1000. I reported it, but was told nothing would happen. They already have police at the airport, I can’t imagine how it could be easier to catch the thief, but no effort was even given.

As someone who has spent a lot of time building and racing cars… yeah the marketing is nuts.

A few years ago Porsche came out with the Taycan. One of their big marketing pushes was that it was better on track than a Tesla model S, because on paper it was worse in many ways (more expensive, less range, less power, worse charging network, etc). The sad thing was all the magazines and journalists seemed to be happy to parrot this position. Porsche bragged about their ring time. Internet commentators agreed. The Taycan Turbo S was a track weapon!

The reality? The car is heavy, it’ll eat tires. I’ve seen guys in cars like that (noobs mind you) cord a set of tires in 1 session. Tracks eat fuel like crazy, I normally brought 4-5 5gallon fuel cans, and a full tank. I could do half a tank in like 8 laps. Electric? What track has super chargers?

And the ring time? $200k+ Taycan turbo s matched the $38k civic type R.

But marketing. And the journalists who really do know better were happy to play the game. Every car seems to be marketed on track now. For most cars, even seemingly performance oriented cars, tracking the car voids the warranty.

Really the brands know that they are selling a fantasy, and very few people will actually even try that stuff. They just want the aura of it. Especially Americans want to buy 120% of the car they need. Need to take a freeway on ramp? Good thing this car has a ring time of X! Should be no problem! Thinking about getting a boat? Better buy an F-250, just to be safe!

As it is, people love to complain about buying gas. If someone were to add up the costs associated with driving, I’m sure it would be insane. And I mean all costs. Driving is subsidized to a level that is incomprehensible, and obfuscated away more than just about anything else.

Every little part of the infrastructure is dumbly serving the idea that a car briefly going 50mph is a good thing. The crossing buttons you mentioned, are often inaccessible from the bike lane. The bike lane doesn’t have a sensor (and such sensors do exist). You have to somehow go up the curb, push the button, and go back to the street. But what if you are turning left or going straight and there is more than 1 lane? What if there are cars in the way, say turning right? Being predictable is paramount to safety, how predictable is it to be in the right lane, hop up a curb to push a button, to go back across 2 lanes to make a left?

One thing I’ve realized is that there is a bias regarding speed. If people drive somewhere and there’s a nice fast road with a lot of traffic, then it’s a quick efficient journey. Regardless of the fact that they hit 4 stop lights and actually averaged less than 20mph. Factor in door to door times, and the numbers get crazy.

Look at the behavior of people in parking lots. It’s very common for people to spend more time parking, to avoid spending part of that time walking. So instead of going for the available spaces that are a 5-10 second walk from the “good spot” they battle to park as close to their destination as possible. To avoid walking 5 seconds. And now your average speed is 15mph in the suburbs. It’s great.

Panasonic ones go down to 50cfm, which is fine for a bedroom. That being said, everything in construction comes down to “it depends” because there is so much variability including just in execution. In California for instance there are mechanical whole home ventilation requirements, but those requirements are quite low and are commonly ineffective for the OPs goal depending on how the system is arranged. Same thing goes for the ERV.

Often times the best way to solve the OPs problem is just to run the central fan (assuming there is central air) as that will exchange bedroom air with the rest of the house, which assuming the house is significantly larger than the bedroom, will basically solve the problem.

If you are going to do an ERV I would recommend adding a filter box for allergens/dust/etc assuming the ERV you select doesn’t have one built in. Not expensive, it’s just a sheet metal box you put filters in, HVAC guys buy and make them all the time.

If you want to spend even less money, and don’t have central air, you can install a bathroom fan in the ceiling/wall of the bedroom, and have it vent to the rest of the house but this takes a bit of thought with regards to airflow and how the air will mix. But even if all you are doing is effectively doubling the volume of your bedroom, that makes a big difference.
