Don't connect your TV to the network. Use an external device for smart features like firestick, Apple tv, Google streamer etc (there are open source options too if you look around and don't mind missing some polish).
I have yet to receive a software update on any of my smart TVs that brought in any positive feature.
You have a good point but the thing is its hard to separate speculation, educated guesses and actual facts. There is so much propaganda mixed with fake news these days. You can't believe anything you read.
$200 hardware only? my main concern with storing photos locally is the need for a NAS. Even at 2-3TB you still need: a NAS device, 2-3 hard drives and the mini pc to run immich + power bill to run them. it will cost more than $180/yr. cost should not be the main factor people store photos locally.
I recently had to throw away a perfectly good HP printer which was working for many years without problems because after an update I didn't ask for no ink cartridge worked anymore. I bought from different shops and still the printer refused to validate them as genuine.
corporate laptops is the key here. take 2 identical laptops one with and one without the spyware - its night and day in both performance and battery life.
The computer games I used to play are nothing like the stuff my son is playing. Its not just a matter of how much time is spent. They are the same as social media, engineered for maximum engagement, contain ads or try to sell you something .
I've only seen a shift on the kind of submissions that get pushed to the front page compared to the past but I guess there's a change in what people consider important in the community

This is not the same as a privacy screen protector. The screen hardware itself can dynamically protect parts of the screen on demand down to pixel level, the OS can then dim only the app or notifications you want dimmed. There is no screen degrading for parts that are not in privacy mode.
Not sure if its worse but you are point rings a bell for me cause I feel that I can no longer do any task without having something being bombarded in my head, be it podcast, music or audiobook.
I use self hosted https://karakeep.app/ to keep links I find interesting. In a year of use I think I only went back twice to find a link I saved. That means most of the time the stuff I think I need to keep for later are useless.
Even windows 7 had complaints when released but it kept improving, on the other hand windows 11 is deteriorating in both stability and anything new added is either half baked or unnecessary borderline user hostile.
If nobody cared about windows there wouldn't be any posts like this one everyday on HN. The problem is people do care and need to use windows which makes all these stupidity by Microsoft the recent years frustrating.
and who decides if I want to use a knife to cut mushrooms instead? see where I am going, there are (or could exist) legit cases when you need to use it in a non-standard way, one that the model authors didn't anticipate.
