Switched to VS code from atom and loving it already. This is what Atom should look like. Atom has become so bloated it's a pain to use now. But there was a previous comment online maybe on HN or Reddit about an issue in the privacy policy or license in VS code. Any idea about that??

How I Built This 10 years ago

This is what the startup podcast series from gimlet should look like. But I suggest you guys listening to their podcast about Twitch. There are two episodes for that. It goes along the same line as Instagram episode by NPR

I saw the previous post as well. I know how it feels having a good idea is not easy. Even people say talk to people and find pain points in their work is easier said than done.

I guess it's partly because we are used to these pain points for a long period of time we don't feel it as a pain point anymore or even though we have a good idea it's not easy to build it as we need lot of capital to do so.

Also even if we have a good idea monetizing is a whole new ball game altogether. Like the chrome extension I'm hacking together on weekends which allows people to search for restaurants around them. I have no idea how I can monetize it and just build it for the challenge of making it.

I think one option is to keep on making cool things. Do something challenging and keep pushing out new things whenever you can. And finally one will stick. I don't think it's easy but if one keep persistent in shipping new things definitely one will become a success.

Like in a similar post I have made like this in the past I remember one commenting, we as HN users believe that everything that we make should be like Airbnb or Uber due to the illusion of success in many startups. But that is not the case and it all comes down to being persistent and enjoying the journey along the way.

Well I being just graduated from university also believe this is very accurate. I did medicine as my degree and one thing I noticed is that almost all A grade students know only medicine and at times lacks the even the basic common knowledge. Some don't have any relationships and a messed social life.

I'm a C grade student did medicine read HN, I'm good at coding, I hack and love making things, have a good social life.

And even my other C grade students play games, go out have a very good time/life.

But there are times I feel whether I should have given up my CS skills for medicine because they don't go well together.

I think there is an area of social search which remains largely untapped. This is because major social networks doesn't allow search engines to search their networks. I think Facebook tired to do this but they used Bing but have they used Google mmm maybe they would have been at social search but I don't think social search will be a thing if Facebook and other networks open up their network

Yes I have not used altavista but I have read about it, and I've read the book and I know search was stuck back then, my question was why the above comment says search is stuck at the moment, because I don't see search stuck at the moment.

Look for another job it's not the end of the world. Be positive. I know it is hard but you have come to a position you have talent you will find a fit for your talent. Don't give up

Well how do you know that Facebook and Google doesn't have what you made? Companies keep things secret until they properly develop it maybe these companies are already up to it.

Also there is nothing called super awesome idea that no one hasn't come across at least someone somewhere must have had the idea you had just that they never pushed it to production or made it and never sold it or at least tried to make it.

I guess the best way is to share the idea with the community not in detail in how you do it but an idea in what you made so other can talk and comment on it. Only after that you will realize it is a grand idea that you think it is.

But on the other hand there are great inventions that went un noticed for a long time before getting traction. Look no further the mp3 Technology that we used today was not used because the bad mp2 technology was backed by big companies. Only after a decade or so with slow traction mp3 got popular. The developers gave up the idea of mp3 and even decided to stop developing it.

This is from a book called "How Music Got Free". I suggest you guys read it :)

Well I play football soccer as some call it. It's tougher than it seems when you play for more than 30 minutes and playing with friends makes it fun rather than working out alone. Now I'm totally addicted in playing and also it keeps me fit.

Hi. Yes that is exactly what I am doing at the moment.

I am learning German, also I am learning machine learning these days.

But haven't you felt at the end of the day doing all this spending time on something like that is worth it? What's the outcome in putting your time in to something like that?

Haven't you felt like that??

Because I feel like that at times :¡

Yes I read the post and it's good. But not sure if an idea will be a successful one if it meets all the criteria, but if it hits majority of the criteria then it will be a good idea non of the less.

Thanks for the in detail answer, no I didn't know about the Hofstadter's Law, I will read more about it.

Also about the second part of the answer, when you ship something and fails I feel disappointing about the time and effort that I have put for it and gaining nothing in return, especially about the time which could have been put for something better.

Well I was thinking of a project idea that I can later turn in to a business if it goes well.

Yah the thing is even though you think it's a good idea you never know until you try it only after trying you realize it's not a good idea after all

Yes I am doing exactly that these days, I am learning German and also learning machine learning, but I feel like all these things are not helping me to achieve anything. Like even if I learn machine learning now the machine learning standards at the moment is miles away. So what's the purpose, because of all this I decided to ask from you guys :)

Most of the time the ideas that seemed good felt not so good after sometime, other ideas that tried ended up failing to gain traction and ended up in GitHub or dead files folder.

I like medium but I am not sure when they will start showing ads on our blogs. I don't like ads on my personal blog.

But I also don't like to write in markdown and yaml and compile into static site and post it on GitHub so I recently moved backto blogger but I still blog on medium too. https://justruky.blogspot.com

Yah true I also think bots have a potential to change the way users deal with businesses.

But as some say bots will replace apps. But can we have a time where bot first? I mean is there a potential for bots to work with end users instead of used by companies like Instagram and Snapchat?

Agreed and I think as the startup arena gets more and more popular and competitive I guess it increases the need for marketing more and more.

I think today one has to spend more money on marketing than few years before and it will be more increased few years from now. I guess It's only going to increase.
