While reading Pushing Ice a very common thought I had was "did Reynolds want to do a Rama sequels?"

Shroud is great, easy recommendation. Another of Tchaikovsky, Alien Clay, also great, also very alien.

I enjoyed the sequels but they're a completely separate story to me, and I don't think I'd read them again.

I didn't go in with the expectation that they'd be just like Rendezvous with Rama.

Nope, just used their web chat support.

i decided to use htmx for a frontend for myself and it was a pretty fun experience. even got tailwind involved pretty easily with my rust+maud backend.

htmx isn't local first. this blog post is about trying to make it 'local first' by introducing a service worker.

my dotfiles follow atlassian's tutorial where they do this, but put the git dir somewhere else and alias away the git command. It has worked pretty well for me.

To a k8s engineer, serverless means “no servers”!

I'd assume a majority of people working with k8s knows what serverless is and where Functions as a Service work more generically.

The rest of the post just seems to be full of strawman arguments.

who is this kubernetes engineer villain? It sounds like a bad coworker at a company with a toxic culture, or a serverless advocate complaining at a bar after a bad meeting.

k8s is great for container orchestration and complex workloads, while serverless shines for event-driven, auto-scaling applications.

But will a k8s engineer ever admit that?

Of course. I manage k8s clusters in aws with eks. We use karpenter for autoscaling. A lot of our system is argo workflows, but we've also got a dozen or so services running.

We also have some large step functions written by a team that chose use lambda because aws can handle that kind of scaling much better than we would have wanted to in k8s.

Unfortunately mods are not very good quality, or too difficult to enjoy.

Most of my playtime in Factorio is with overhaul mods, there's a lot of quality content there. I'm not sure how many of them have been brought to 2.0 or even will be. I'm curious where you think quality lacks.

Space Exploration has been my favorite, but Ultracube, Krastorio2, and Nullius were all quite fun. I'll admit I haven't finished Ultracube and Nullius, but I have restarted my Ultracube run in 2.0.

Space age is interesting because new planets are being added by fans, but I don't think they're going to be as well designed and really bring anything interesting.

Check out Maraxsis and/or Cerys, these were the kinds of planet mods I was hoping for in Space Age. Maraxsis is an ocean planet and you build underwater and in deep trenches, and the planet's building has a base 50% quality. Cerys is a moon of Fulgora that's really quite small and it's more of a puzzle than anything.

we're using the kong gateway controller on aws eks, it's pretty neat. I prefer to manage it via argocd/gitops over terraform.

Karpenter is great for managing spot fleet nodes as well. Most of our clusters run a small aws managed node group for karpenter and the rest of the nodes will be spot fleet and managed by karpenter.

That was my thought exactly, it sounded right out of a Greg Egan story.

This is how I manage my dotfiles, and it has worked pretty well for me.

It doesn't seem like most Nobel laureates do their work with the sole intent of winning. I think it serves more as one of the highest forms of recognition, not necessarily a place to stand on a podium.

I go to movies at an Alamo Drafthouse.

They're known for being pretty willing to kick out unruly guests, and I definitely appreciate it. I actually haven't had any issues at any of their locations in Denver, CO.

There's obvious exceptions, big fan service opening movies like Endgame were quite loud but it was a whole audience experience and it was fun, but typical movies and post-opening-weekend, most people are respectful.

I have one of the first Prusas

I've had two Prusa mk3s for a few years now and they've been excellent. No problems at all, and now Prusa is my default recommendation. I'd run batch jobs on them for days for "customers" without concern.

My preference is to use kustomize with argocd applicationsets.

If helm is how some application is distributed we just render the template with our values file and store that in git, even though argocd can also use helm charts. We'd just prefer to see the diff in git instead of argocd so the deployment is still automated.

I don't think you read the article. It's about deploying resources onto k8s with ansible, not deploying or maintaining k8s.
