Iron Ring 13 years ago

There is an American equivalent to the iron ring, but the organization behind it expressly prohibits membership to CS and Software Engineering graduates last time I checked.

Screw them. I got one on my own. I had a custom jewelist take the cladding off a simple band of white gold. I wear it for the same reason mentioned by others: to remind me of my obligations to my profession, my customers and clients, and to the public at large.

Engineers as Heroes 14 years ago

Flight of the Phoenix (1965) - The heroic engineer is a German model airplane designer who rebuilds a crashed air freighter.

Threshold (1981) - Jeff Goldblum plays a biomedical engineer who designs and builds the world's first self-contained artificial heart.

Buckaroo Banzai (1984) - A stretch, I think, but BB and the Hong Kong Cavaliers are all techies to one degree or another.

Real Genius (1985) - The heros are physics and CS majors, but that's close enough.

The rep may have been talking about flexible spending accounts. FSAs are fine if you can predict how much you'll be spending on health care, but if you overestimate you will lose what you don't spend.

One big advantage of HSAs is that if you lose your job the HSA money is still there to draw on if you need it.

NTs dominate technical fields and most engineers are INTPs, so these results are consistent with what I've seen before. I've learned that your position on the Introversion-Extraversion axis depends on your situation. I'm a lot more outgoing when I'm at work if I can get a few hours in the evening alone to recharge mentally.

Oh, yeah. INTJ.
