I am in the process of launching my poultry RFID tags, “eFlock Smart Poultry Tags”. They allow farmers to count and identify all of the birds that they have. The project goes along with a mobile app, Manger, a tool that can be used to gather data about livestock (not just poultry). Tags should be available sometime this week, perhaps early next week on Amazon. A bit of a shill comment but… I have chickens and have been tracking egg production in an app that I’ve built, a livestock manager of sorts called Manger.

Looking at my data, since we’ve had our first egg 743 days ago, our hens have produced 9,393 eggs, or an average of just above a dozen a day.

The app can also count chickens, since each chicken has a UHF RFID.

Are there any places where a hobbyist could purchase a tag or reader?

If a workstation has Git installed on it, which I’d think would be the case for substantial number of engineers out there (…not just software engineers), grep is there due to Git BASH.

I haven’t played with any stationary antennas but I think it’s possible.

The scanner that is used in the video has configuration for transmit power. At its maximum setting, the range is 15 feet with clear line of sight.

Tags with larger antennas, generally speaking, have longer range but might be too big for younger chickens.

So overall there are a lot of variables.
