Before I discovered HN (of which I'm on daily), I was a frequent reader of Groklaw[0]- a site primarily devoted to covering the fragile intersection of the technology sector and legal system; where the two are often at odds with one another. We're more than a decade beyond it's voluntary closure after the Snowden revelations and it's left a large void on substantive coverage of these issues. The site was the blog of an anonymous tech reporter named Pamela Jones that did detailed deep-dives into the parties & issues involved in high-profile lawsuits between tech companies, like Apple vs. Samsung on the issue of design patents for rounded corners, over what have often been patents containing broad language that resulted in hindrances to innovation ranging from being unwilling to license to extortion of revenue streams for entire product lines. Part of why I find the technology industry to be continually interesting is its desire to innovate instead of litigate- there needs to be a check on bad faith actors whose goal is capture of a niche through regulatory means instead of fair competition; else we get these cases relegated to the infamous eastern district of Texas which has historically played favor towards non-practicing patent trolls. I'll be submitting my comment and suggest others do the same.
On Friday I was converting a constrained solver from python to another language, and ran into some difficulty with subsituting an optimzer that's a few lines of easily written Scipy; but barely being supported in another language. One AI tool found this out and fully re-implemented the solver using a custom linear algebra library it wrote from scratch. But another AI tool was really struggling with getting the right syntax to be compatible with the common existing optimization libaries, and I felt like I was repeatedly putting queries (read: $) into the software equivalent of a slot machine that was constantly apologizing for not giving a testable answer while eating tens of dollars in direct costs waiting for the "jackpot" of working code.
The feedback loop of "maybe the next time it'll be right" turned into a few hundred queries resulting in finding the LLM's attempts were a ~20 node cycle of things it tried and didn't work, and now you're out a couple dollars and hours of engineering time.

There was a past disclosure where lead was found[0] within an in-house product. Buzzfeed did a story about sending some products to a lab and you're right they're safe existing products[1] only with Infowars' own exaggerated marketing labeled on.

I had the goldbugs and silver bugs in mind- they'd be more than willing to pay exorbitant markup, with the feel-good ennui of it going towards a good cause. These were $100 for a 1/10 gram at the time of writing and now are sold out. Coincidence???
I've encountered this before with absurdly high job requirements paired with a low-moderate commensurate salary. While on call with an HR rep for a listing I had loosely met, I deduced from their responses it was done so the company could claim their talent needs aren't being met domestically, and thus would file for more H-1B or H-2B work authorization permits. This is rife with its own issues of non-transparency and offshoring, where I likely encountered it in the later stages[0] and was being paid lip service to the process without the intent of hiring.
There's tonnes of worthless merchandise and supplements of a dubious nature which The Onion, the least expected of all possible buyers, now has to find a use for. My first suggestion would be melting down all of the 500% marked up gold bars[0] and make a one-time-run charity auction collectible for the Sandy Hook families. Or upcycling all the paper in Alex Jones' books [1] into paper mache, and use it to make globes, to really stick it to the globalists!

How the family found out about satellites is very interesting to me- such an unexplained phenomena wouldn't make sense to some groups (ie, flat-earthers deny their existence altogether), where they would have observed Sputnik zooming across the sky while only being visible at dawn and dusk. With such perfect recurrence the Lykovs would have been able to deduce that the object followed ordinary orbital mechanics against the backdrop of the celestial cosmos rather than being a supernatural object, especially that Sputnik was only in the sky for a couple months in 1957. Later ones would have have likely indicated they were a product of man; I'd personally ascribe it to being supernatural in origin!
The main hardware security bugs[0] were very low hanging fruit associated with taking over the boot chain at ring 0- it's more likely that Nintendo themselves were in a rush to get the product on the market after the perceived failure of the Wii U. Even with a secure software stack, people found a way to defeat the Xbox 360 hardware[1] by physically drilling into a chip that enforced a software lock, and George Hotz became known for his work in finding ECDSA flaws in the PS3. Companies can design these locks to last for a few years of a console's lifespan, but I think people now are determined enough to dive into these difficult problems that they're unlikely to be secured forever.

I still remember how quickly this spread and people made their own versions, right about the same time as Twitch Plays Pokemon came out! I'm glad it's had such a positive impact both globally among your players and to your career. Praise helix!
Doesn't this seem a bit "low stakes" to want more disclosures about? I view it in the same light as say someone who posts makeup reviews or video game reviews on YouTube- often it isn't their primary source of income, and the item value (<$100) seems notional. Maybe it can be treated as more of a deal if a company were to attach stipulations or keywords for the reviewer to mention, at which point it should be treated as a partnership rather than a less-than-impartial review. I subscribe to independent creators on Patreon because bias is nearly impossible to avoid when there's a quid pro quo of getting a stream of free things from companies.
It was later added it to the paid copy of the game and it's similar to a 'very hard' difficulty where the normal strategies of development don't apply and you have to include DRM most of the time to break even on per-game costs. Completing it was a difficult achievement.
Tay.ai was the Gen Z large language model that was years ahead of its time. Apparently the project was continued in other languages but in a much more controlled state with a more curated corpus more similar to Watson; as opposed to being trained on unfiltered Twitter/forum input and we saw how that turned out[0].
PredictIt had a limit of $850 on the platform, and even it's in the process of being shut down by the CFTC. I see it as a chicken-and-egg problem because having actual stakes even when miniscule means that smarter decisions are made with allocation; but I feel a lot of users would grow bored or not even use the platform if they could only use play money. My personal favorite example was ran in Popular Science magazine[0] for a few years where users could buy/sell imaginary shares based on the % probability outcome of certain events/discoveries being made by a specified date.

Sad to see artists and game designers create a wonderful CRPG (with a zany spirit!) yet have the joy siphoned out by greed outside of their control. The team learned to code because they thought a video game would be enjoyed by more people and scaled up from there; will definitely be supporting their next efforts.
This game provides more satisfaction than solving a difficult coding contest problem. Some may treat it as a time sink; I see it as an allegory for our species as a whole. Is this the logical conclusion for humanity? To make paperclips?
Fake accounts on platforms raise internal metrics of usage & activity, which practically creates an anti-incentive for the parent company to remove them. One can imagine fictional scenarios that wouldn't pass a basic litmus test yet make an otherwise meaningless number go up that for some reason pleases the investors solely because it's higher than the previous quarter's number. I'd move my profile over to ShlinkedIn if given the choice.

I was under the impression that the 2022 Global Championship was an in-person event sponsored by chess.com but instead is fully online. Having read through more of the report with Niemann's interactions with the CEO regarding his previous online cheating, admission of prior cheating & promise to "never ever do it again", and then making statistically improbable moves (yet denies assistance) during online play does raise some suspicion.
While I might personally disagree with the company's decision and think it's a bad image to deny the best players from participating, FIDE doesn't have the same level of oversight over players/sponsors like say the PGA does over its relationships. There is a FIDE Code of Ethics[0] that mentions a ban if an advisory panel finds credible evidence of cheating, where I still believe that centipawn loss and the other metrics published in the aforementioned report don't clear the bar of unconditionally cheating and a ban shouldn't be enforced.

Niemann should be treated like the equivalent of a major league athlete, where FIDE as chess's governing body should have the final say as to whether Hans is allowed to compete at major tournaments instead of corporate sponsor Chess.com. The accusations of him cheating at over-the-board play have been dubious at best, and the allegations of doing so during online play are inconclusive with no smoking gun to indicate outside help. Chess.com's report[0] focused on analyzing his online games and de-emphasized his strong play in over-the-board games, and also says their report shouldn't be used as a reason for him not to play at in-person tournaments; yet do the doublespeak of banning him from the 2022 Global Championship!
While it is true that even a single small outside hint can change the outcome of a game, Niemann and the entire chess community have benefitted from practicing against increasingly stronger computer engines where play styles have adjusted to this new era as well in addition to self-funding his tuition at a private school. Many of these tournaments over the past 3 years have only been played online, and have easier access to both stronger real and virtual opponents so having a faster increase in his ELO rating than anyone previously is not outside the realm of possibility.
Defamation, while likely will be settled for much less than the stated amount, on this is case is very justified as tournaments are invite-only rather than climbing a tournament ladder by winning local/regional games. Barring an athlete based on unsubstantiated political decisions and effectively trying to destroy Niemann's livelihood should be seen as highly unethical action by Chess.com and Carlsen.
Sorry you were on the receiving end of that and had to learn the hard way. We had the dean of the college (large public research university) I was working at the time receive a gift of a bunch of new MBPs as a token of goodwill from a foreign country, and heard in the very next sentence that they would be going straight into a shredder. At the time I thought these brand-new laptops could easily be wiped & repurposed; but now realize it was a potential attack surface that can easily leak info to APT/espionage groups the second it connects to a network.
Less than a year later a story made national headlines that a professor with direct access to classified material had mysteriously disappeared & never disclosed his close ties with their home country. So not only should you be worried about back doors and side doors; but also watch what's going through your front door as well!

What sort of instrumentation would be onboard? The last mission destined to leave our solar system was New Horizons[0] and its equipment was designed in the early/mid-2000s with the express goal of imaging the outer planets. Both Voyager probes have some instrumentation still sending data back to Earth[1] as well, though current projections estimate we may only be receiving data from them for until the end of the decade. Sending a probe out that only improves on a few areas such as ionized plasma detection and gas chromatography to determine what elements are in the heliosphere seem to arbitrary improvements on a short timeframe; but these are systems designed with a 50+ year lifespan. The 500 page report published by NASA[2] for a future insterstellar probe is a bit much for a layperson to understand, but such a program can also be done over a longer timeframe to justify its continued funding.
It's been over 40 years since we last launched a probe with the express purpose of exploring interstellar space, and technology has improved to the point of enabling these missions to be multi-generational by planning further launches to create a networked constellation. When I was a kid seeing the 'Pale Blue Dot' image in the book Cosmos, it gave a perspective of looking at humanity's achievements on a cosmic timescale instead rather than only the human timescale, and I think setting long-term goals of exploring our universe are held by everyone regardless of nationality. Delivering tangible results to the public like JWST's fantastic images and the 'Pale Blue Dot' photo are arguably just as important as the scientific data gathered.

So a standard for interoperability developed with 'patent ceasefires' saying party X won't sue party Y if both share their patent portfolios with one another is considered to be anti-competitive behavior? In the US this is fairly common among tech companies that perfom this sharing under FRAND terms with one another, and saves a lot of headache in avoiding litigation.
The most popular existing codec AVC/H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 is owned by the MPEGLA group with ~5500 active patents[0] in its portfolio, and the royalty sharing agreements[1] involved are free in small volumes yet become expensive at scale. A multi-tier fee structure for both hardware OEMs (think like the MPEG-2 license fee on the raspberry pi) and video distributors (Netflix et al) exist, where several large tech companies decided to band together in order to create a codec which isn't at the mercy of paying these license fees.
However, Sisvel wants to make their case against AOMedia's goal of a widely distributed free codec and extract up to 32 cents per device[2] based on their pool of a couple hundred patents[3] for both VP9 and AV1 codecs. We'll likely see this go to court and possibly drawn out over a long stretch of time if FRAND terms aren't able to be agreed upon between these parties.
Having a uniform royalty-free standard would be a net win for everyone involved- chip designers can add in an AV1 encoder/decoder without paying a license fee, software companies can freely encode & distribute AV1 videos, and end users have access to free video editing tools that wouldn't need to pay MPEGLA/Sisvel either. The alternative is waiting for the patents to expire and continue rewarding the rent-seeking behavior of NPEs/holding companies created to extract value at every possible step.
